Voluntary Contractions Underestimate Peak Muscle Activity In Drop Jumps, David Alan Phillips, Skylar Paletta, Michael R. Perlet Jun 2025

Voluntary Contractions Underestimate Peak Muscle Activity In Drop Jumps, David Alan Phillips, Skylar Paletta, Michael R. Perlet

Department of Kinesiology Scholarship and Creative Works

Maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) are a common method to normalize electromyographic amplitude into standardized units of %MVIC. However, in 60% of drop jump research using an MVIC in 2018–2023, supramaximal activation or activation greater than 100% MVIC occurred. Therefore, MVICs may not be representative of peak muscle activation, leading to erroneous interpretation of muscle activation. The purpose of this study is to quantify EMG normalization difference in drop jump landings. Sixteen (10 M, 6F) participants were recruited for the study. MVICs were recorded from nine lower extremity muscles and this activation compared to the maximal activation recorded from 10 …

A Provably Secure Coercion-Resistant E-Voting Scheme With Confidentiality, Anonymity, Unforgeability, And Cai Verifiability, Yun Xing Kho, Swee Huay Heng, Syh Yuan Tan, Ji Jian Chin Jun 2025

A Provably Secure Coercion-Resistant E-Voting Scheme With Confidentiality, Anonymity, Unforgeability, And Cai Verifiability, Yun Xing Kho, Swee Huay Heng, Syh Yuan Tan, Ji Jian Chin

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Ensuring both cast-as-intended (CAI) verifiability and coercion-resistance in e-voting remains a critical challenge. The e-voting scheme proposed by Finogina and Herranz in 2023 represents the first notable advancement in reconciling these conflicting requirements. CAI verifiability allows voters to confirm that their intended vote has been correctly recorded, even without a secure channel to the election committee, while coercion-resistance prevents external influence and vote-selling. However, essential security properties such as confidentiality, anonymity, unforgeability, and double-voting prevention fall outside the scope of Finogina and Herranz’s e-voting scheme, leaving significant gaps in its security guarantees. To address this limitation, we propose a novel …

Revised Unsteady Drag Force And Its Impact On Particle Dynamics At High Reynolds Numbers, Ahmad Talaei, Timothy J. Garrett Jun 2025

Revised Unsteady Drag Force And Its Impact On Particle Dynamics At High Reynolds Numbers, Ahmad Talaei, Timothy J. Garrett

Physics Student Research

The accurate modeling of particle motion in viscous fluids at high Reynolds numbers remains a fundamental challenge, particularly under unsteady flow conditions where nonlinear effects dominate. This study introduces a revised unsteady drag formulation, extending its applicability beyond previous studies. By integrating classical solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations, the new formulation overcomes the limitations of the Maxey–Riley–Gatignol (MRG) equation, addressing non-physical memory effects associated with Basset drag and extending its applicability to higher Reynolds numbers.

Through experimental comparisons and direct numerical simulations (DNS), the revised equation of motion is compared to the MRG equation, both during steady-state conditions and non-equilibrium …

Risky Business: Organizational Challenges In International Support For Civilian Self-Protection, J. M. Welsh, Emily Paddon Rhoads, J. Masullo

Political Science Faculty Works

Over the last decade, a range of international actors has moved away from direct forms of intervention to protect civilian populations in favor of “bottom-up” approaches that emphasize external support for civilian self-protection (CSP). While this indirect action is often perceived to be less costly, more legitimate, and potentially more effective, we argue that external support for CSP is a “risky business” that presents a significant dilemma for international governmental and nongovernmental organizations. Drawing on literature from sociology, economics, and civil war studies, we conceptualize and categorize the risks of unintended consequences that could accompany external support for CSP and …

Selective Anti-Tumor And Normal Tissue Sparing Effects Of Flash Radiotherapy In A Simple Algebraic Model Of Radiochemical Kinetics, Charles F. Babbs Jun 2025

Selective Anti-Tumor And Normal Tissue Sparing Effects Of Flash Radiotherapy In A Simple Algebraic Model Of Radiochemical Kinetics, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Working Papers

Background: This short paper presents the solution to an open problem in medical physics: how and when FLASH radiotherapy can have a selective anti-tumor effect. FLASH radiotherapy gives a single large dose of ionizing radiation to a cancer patient within a time span of a few milliseconds, unlike conventional radiotherapy which is divided into several dose fractions given weekly, each lasting about 10 minutes. In some animal models FLASH seems to improve tumor cell killing without damaging normal tissues. However, the mechanism of the selective anti-tumor effect remains elusive. Methods: To explore effects of tissue hypoxia in tumors, a model …

Revival Of Industrial Policy Implications For International Trade Law, Yong-Shik Lee Jun 2025

Revival Of Industrial Policy Implications For International Trade Law, Yong-Shik Lee

Minnesota Journal of International Law, Vols. 28:2 onward (2019-present)

In recent years, the world’s major economies, such as the United States, China, and the European Union, have adopted policies that aim to promote domestic industries in strategic areas, such as semiconductors and electric vehicles, through substantial subsidization. These policies have been justified for the need to secure supply chains and protect national security interests, but they are also incompatible with the rules of international trade law, such as the WTO Subsidies and Countervailing Measures Agreement. There are considerable challenges to addressing this incompatibility as these economies have shared interests in promoting these policies for their own domestic industries. The …

And They Would Have Gotten Away With It, If Not For Those Meddling Federales: Examining State Responses To Transnational Organized Crime And Developing A Policy Framework, Aaron Lutz

Minnesota Journal of International Law, Vols. 28:2 onward (2019-present)

Transnational criminal organizations (TCOs) have begun expanding their enterprise into criminal gold mining in South America. This is causing widespread harm from human trafficking, pollution, and disease. These groups exploit vulnerable artisanal miners (ASMs) to provide a foothold in the gold mining industry and avoid the reach of states. This note examines the policy responses that South American countries have taken to this phenomenon and develops a policy framework for state actors moving against TCOs.

Potentials Of Informal Household-Practiced Urban Farming As A Contributor To Sustainability And Resilience In Emirati Neighbourhoods, Hadia Al Haddad

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has integrated local agendas aimed at achieving urban sustainability and resilience, particularly in alignment with UAE Vision 2030. However, official initiatives in this domain often lack genuine community participation—a critical pillar for the success of sustainable urban development. Meanwhile, urban farming has garnered increasing recognition both globally and locally as a significant contributor to urban sustainability and resilience. In the UAE, official focus has largely centered on professional vertical farming, demonstrated through various high-profile projects. In contrast, informal, household-based urban farming is actively practiced within semi-public, semi-private, and private spaces across many Emirati public housing …

Distinguishing tumor maintenance genes from initiation, progression, and passenger genes is critical for developing effective therapies. We employed a functional genomic approach using the Lazy Piggy transposon to identify tumor maintenance genes in vivo, and applied this to SHH medulloblastoma (MB). Combining Lazy Piggy screening in mice and transcriptomic profiling of human MB, we identified the voltage-gated potassium channel KCNB2 as a candidate maintenance driver. KCNB2 governs cell volume of MB-propagating cells, with KCNB2 depletion causing osmotic swelling, decreased plasma membrane tension, and elevated endocytic internalization of EGFR, thereby mitigating proliferation of MB-propagating cells to ultimately impair MB growth. …

Regulation Of Myogenesis By Mechanomir-200c/Foxo3 Axis, Junaith S Mohamed, Aladin M Boriek Jun 2025

Regulation Of Myogenesis By Mechanomir-200c/Foxo3 Axis, Junaith S Mohamed, Aladin M Boriek

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Cyclic mechanical stretch has been shown to inhibit myoblast differentiation while promoting proliferation. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not well understood. Here, we report that mechanical stretch inhibits the differentiation of mouse primary myoblasts by promoting the cell cycle program and by inhibiting the expression of the myogenic regulator MyoD. Stretch alters the miRNA expression profile as evidenced by miRNA microarray analysis. We identified miR-200c as one of the highly downregulated mechanosensitive miRNAs (mechanomiRs) whose expression level was increased during differentiation. This suggests that mechanomiRs-200c is a myogenic miRNA. Overexpression of mechanomiR-200c revoked the effect of stretch on myoblast …

Identifying The Drivers Behind The Decline Of Douglas-Fir And True Fir Species In Sw Oregon, Alexander Bryant Bentley Jun 2025

Identifying The Drivers Behind The Decline Of Douglas-Fir And True Fir Species In Sw Oregon, Alexander Bryant Bentley

Dissertations and Theses

Increased levels of Pseudotsuga menziesii (DF) and Abies species (TF) decline throughout dry forests in the Klamath Mountains and Western Cascades ecoregions have been recorded in recent years, with preliminary evidence suggesting that factors influenced by changing climatic conditions and encroachment from fire suppression policies are primarily to blame. Yet, the physiological and environmental mechanisms of drought-driven tree decline are poorly understood across biophysical and spatial gradients. Given the complex relations that drive decline, determining the degree of influence of specific drivers is difficult, creating unique challenges for modern forest management. To elucidate the most important factors driving DF and …

Lrrc8 Channel Complexes Counterbalance Katp Channels To Mediate Swell-Secretion Coupling In Mouse Pancreatic Β Cells, Tarek Mohamed Abd El-Aziz, Chen Kang, Litao Xie, John D. Tranter, Sumit Patel, Rahul Chadda, Maria S. Remedi, Rajan Sah

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Insulin secretion from pancreatic β cells is initiated by membrane potential depolarization, followed by activation of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels to trigger Ca2+-mediated insulin vesicle fusion with the β cell plasma membrane. Here, we show that β cell swelling associated with glucose metabolism was sensed by LRRC8 channel complexes and contributed to insulin secretion. Hypertonic perfusate (360-380 mOsm) dose dependently impaired glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by counteracting β cell swelling. Hypotonic perfusate alone, independent of glucose stimulation or KATP channel closure, was sufficient to increase β cell intracellular Ca2+ and trigger insulin secretion. Inhibition of sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter-1 with bumetanide, which diminished the …
