Aspen forests provide wildlife, watershed, and aesthetic value, and the potential for reduced fire occurrence, behavior, and severity. There is interest in planting aspen to achieve various management objectives. However, few studies have investigated the optimal conditions for aspen seedlings in the western US. We conducted two experiments to address this knowledge gap. First, we tested the effects of shading structures (i.e., logs) and biochar on the survival and growth of 960 outplanted aspen seedlings in three exclosures in a recent fire footprint. Second, we tested whether experimentally placing logs near 120 naturally-occurring post-fire aspen seedlings affected survival or growth. …

Introduction

Post-stroke fatigue (PSF) is highly prevalent and lacks of effective management. Recent evidence suggest the use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to reduce PSF. However, the effect was not lasting and the working mechanisms was unclear. The purpose of this study is to determine the behavioral and neurophysiological effects of five daily sessions of tDCS on PSF.

Methods and analysis

This will be a double-blind randomized controlled trial targeting an enrollment of 32 participants with subacute-chronic stroke and significant fatigue (average Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) > 4). Participants will be equally randomized to either anodal tDCS or sham tDCS …

Abstract

This qualitative content analysis investigated the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation necessary for male and female colleges students to engage in physical activity, including spiritual aspects. Survey questions were used to collect data from 80 college students from the suburbs of Chicago, ages 18-24, 43 males and 37 females. Data analysis included coding of the student comments and results showed that males are motivated by the extrinsic motivators of competition and social engagement and the intrinsic motivators of enjoyment and stress relief while females are motivated by the extrinsic motivator of appearance and the intrinsic motivators of spirituality, enjoyment and …

In May 2025, U.S. employment grew by 139,000, with gains in health care, leisure, and social assistance, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.2%. "I'M Guilty, But I'M Not A War Criminal!": Fixing Treaty Crimes, Dyllan M. Taxman

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy

This Article examines the Supreme Court's test for treaty crime constitutionality against the gauntlet of time and application. Treaty crimes are criminal behavior violating statutes penalizing private individuals for disobeying the terms of an international treaty obligation. The current treaty crime test from Bond v. United States has produced inconsistent results resting on shaky constitutional grounds. This Article proposes a new test relying on constitutional delegations of authority and treaty drafting history to determine when a treaty crime statute violates the Tenth Amendment. Water electrolysis technologies for hydrogen production are receiving significant attention due to a drastic reduction in the cost of renewable energy sources in recent years. Though traditional alkaline and proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers are receiving the most commercial attention, the anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMEL) has the potential to be much lower in cost. AEMELs have recently shown remarkable progress in terms of performance and durability. However, they are still mostly operated with expensive platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts on both the anode and cathode. In this no-grounds holdover, the court affirmed the denial of the tenant's motion to vacate a default judgment and be restored to possession after eviction. The tenant claimed his failure to appear was due to his incarceration, but he provided no documentation to support this assertion. The court found that the tenant's motion papers were insufficient, consisting only of conclusory statements without evidence of a reasonable excuse or a meritorious defense. The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: Redistricting Commissions In The 2021 Cycle, Samuel S.-H. Wang, Zachariah W. Sippy

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy

In the last decade, redistricting commissions have proliferated across the United States as a means of reducing partisan gerrymandering. This article provides a comprehensive evaluation of their performance using both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Drawing on redistricting data from all fifty states between 2021 and 2024, we analyze how different commission designs affected partisan fairness, competitiveness, and adherence to traditional principles like compactness and preservation of communities of interest. Our analysis reveals that autonomous commissions with final map-drawing authority, balanced bipartisan processes with multiple non-partisan actors, and binding judicial review consistently produced redistricting plans with lower partisan bias and higher …

Lighting Up The Cell: Developing A Luminescent Lanthanide Probe For Detecting Rnas, Jonathan Savell

An anion detecting luminescent probe, Tb:DO2A-Cs124, was repurposed for use in RNA imaging. Potential RNA aptamers were identified for the molecule using Capture-SELEX and MinION sequencing. Fluorimetry data revealed these aptamers did not allow for the probe to luminesce in the presence of target RNAs due to adenosine monophosphate’s ability to quench the emission signal.

Heart Failure (HF) is a complex clinical syndrome that is defined by an inability of the heart to meet the oxygen demands of the body. Myocardial interstitial fibrosis (MIF), the diffuse overaccumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins within the cardiac interstitium, contributes to ventricular dysfunction in HF. Mechanical devices designed to alleviate left ventricular deficiencies, termed left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), provide a pump that delivers oxygenated blood to the aorta thereby decreasing hemodynamic load on the ventricle. This end-stage HF therapy alleviates symptomatic burden for HF patients, however, LVAD support does not reduce MIF in the LV, and myocardial …

We present bloom patterns as a family of radially expansive, flat-foldable, and developable origami patterns, many of which are rotationally symmetric. Skateboarding is an everyday, out-of-class activity at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Daytona Beach (ERAU-DB) campus, serving as a means of transport and a source of social conflict and peacebuilding. Its popularity among students for mobility around campus fosters a sense of community, but its interlinkage as a source of contention and peace is poorly understood. This study employs a participatory research framework to explore how everyday skateboarding is a form of transport that intersects with conflict and peacebuilding at ERAU. Introduction

Subclavian artery (SCA) aneurysms are exceedingly rare (~0.13% of peripheral aneurysms).

There are no criteria regarding size cut off for repair.

Surgery is indicated given risk of complications (thrombosis, embolization leading to CVA or UE ischemia, compression of adjacent structures).

  • Open surgery (via median sternotomy, hemisternotomy, lateral thoracotomy, supraclavicular or axillary incision),
  • Endovascular (stent graft, aneurysm sac coiling, kissing stents or combination)

This study presents a systematic method for characterizing power profiles of concentric ring multifocal contact lenses (MFCL), specifically the MiSight® lens used in myopia management, and evaluates the potential of Multivariate Adaptive Regression Spline (MARS) modelling to extrapolate profiles across a full dioptric range.Power profiles of eleven MiSight® lenses (−0.25D, then −1.00D to −10.00D in 1.00D steps) were measured using the NIMOevo® system. MiSight® lenses comprise four concentric zones, with zones 2 and 4 providing additional plus power. Financial restructuring is a critical strategy for organizations navigating economic challenges, particularly during mergers and acquisitions (M&A). However, 61% of strategic initiatives fail due to ineffective knowledge transfer, communication barriers, and insufficient integration of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) (PMI, 2014; Durst & Zieba, 2019). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) interact with the target mRNAs to induce translational repression and mRNA degradation. Interestingly, miRNAs themselves can turnover rapidly when binding to a target RNA with extensive complementarity, a phenomenon called target-directed miRNA degradation (TDMD). To date, all validated TDMD "triggers" can induce miRNA degradation reside in non-coding regions of the RNA. We found that TDMD triggers placed in the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of a reporter degraded miRNAs more effectively than those in the coding sequence (CDS). Inhibiting translation of the reporter enhanced miRNA degradation by the CDS trigger, indicating that ribosome-free CDS triggers are more accessible to …
