MicroRNAs (miRNAs) interact with the target mRNAs to induce translational repression and mRNA degradation. Interestingly, miRNAs themselves can turnover rapidly when binding to a target RNA with extensive complementarity, a phenomenon called target-directed miRNA degradation (TDMD). To date, all validated TDMD "triggers" can induce miRNA degradation reside in non-coding regions of the RNA. We found that TDMD triggers placed in the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of a reporter degraded miRNAs more effectively than those in the coding sequence (CDS). Inhibiting translation of the reporter enhanced miRNA degradation by the CDS trigger, indicating that ribosome-free CDS triggers are more accessible to …

Understanding how diverse microbial taxa coexist in the human body without competitively excluding one another remains a key challenge in microbiome ecology. One proposed explanation is the colonization-persistence trade-off, where species with high colonization ability are poor persisters, and vice versa. We test for this trade-off across human associated microbial communities among many individuals and in multiple body sites using a large-scale participant-level meta-analysis of longitudinal microbiome datasets curated from the MGnify database. We applied island biogeography-based models to calculate effective colonization and persistence rates for microbial families and genera across 606 individuals over twenty-six studies. This project aimed to assess the risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in college football players aged 18–25 using the STOP-BANG screening tool and to evaluate the impact of an educational intervention on the knowledge of athletic trainers. Within the interdisciplinary field of memory studies, there has been a significant push to not only identify and theorize trauma but also map out and propose ways to move through and beyond the constraints of trauma. This article will use Andrew Haigh’s 2023 film All of Us Strangers to theorize an experience that forms a redemptive foil to trauma that I term encounter. Strivers, Ambivalence, And The Implications Of Wholeheartedness, Kaia K. Hathaway

In this thesis, I examine Harry Frankfurt’s account of the will and its implications for ambivalence, particularly in the context of moral striving. I begin by outlining Frankfurt’s hierarchical model of desires and his view that ambivalence represents a failure of agency. I then explore his proposed solution—wholeheartedness—which aims to resolve inner conflict by rejecting incompatible desires. Drawing on David Velleman and Justin Coates, I argue that Frankfurt’s view faces both agential and ethical challenges, especially for individuals engaged in upward mobility, or “strivers.” I suggest that the experiences of strivers—those who must navigate competing ethical commitments—pose a unique challenge …

This thesis examines female religiosity in the United Farm Workers movement. Using primarily a collection of essays written by UFW volunteers, this thesis highlights key moments in UFW history when women added to the religious direction of the UFW through innovative ideas and their personal faith. This thesis adds to recent scholarship dedicated to highlighting the stories of rank-and-file members of the UFW. It also adds to the Chicana scholarship that has recognized the consistent leadership of women in the UFW by demonstrating women’s religious and spiritual leadership in the UFW.

Background and Objectives: Primary care physicians are well-positioned to be at the forefront of screening for and treating substance use disorders (SUDs). In addition, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has deemed addiction training a common program requirement for all residency programs. With less than one-third of family medicine residency programs providing addiction training, understanding best practices for addiction training is important.

Methods: We interviewed 12 faculty at family medicine residency programs across the country who have a strong reputation for addiction training. We analyzed interview transcripts thematically to identify best practices for creating and providing addiction curricula.

Geographical thinking is a cornerstone of modern geography education. Despite its universal value, no large-scale international study has systematically examined its integration into diverse curricular documents. This study investigates how geographical thinking is embedded in the curricula of nine countries, focusing on content and procedural dimensions. Using a structured analytical framework, the research reveals significant patterns and gaps, particularly the underrepresentation of place as a central concept, the lack of explicit focus on geographical thinking, and the limited emphasis on its procedural dimension. In many high-poverty schools, students with disabilities continue to face significant barriers and challenges when compared to their typically developing peers. A lack of tangible or positive experiences often leads to low self-efficacy and hindered achievement. This study explored Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) as an instructional approach rooted in student agency. A convergent mixed-methods quasi-experimental design investigated how agentic PALS impacted mathematical self-efficacy and achievement. PALS leveraged neuroscience principles to support agency through skill-aligned peer pairings as dyads that eliminated power differentials. Introduction and aims: To evaluate knowledge regarding the management of deep carious lesions and exposed pulps among undergraduate and postgraduate endodontic students from ten dental institutions across ten countries, and the impact of operator (material, antibiotic prescription) and patient-related (age, symptoms) factors on their treatment protocols. In the context of modern Sephardic literature, this paper defines “textual space” as the narrative’s self-conscious arrangement of its own textual elements such as time, space, and language to negotiate a position vis-à-vis the nation-state that is neither fully subsumed within nor completely outside of it. Textual spaces neither conform to the nation state’s borders even though they write from it, nor to nationalist temporalities as they continue a narrative thread that reaches back to 15th-century Spain. Identifying the ureters in patients with advanced endometriosis and severe pelvic adhesive disease can be challenging. Adhesiolysis along the deformed pelvic sidewall may increase the risk of prolonged operative time and incidental ureteral injury. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and surgical outcomes of using Indocyanine Green (ICG) under near-infrared fluorescence for intraoperative ureteral localization and preservation during robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery (RALS) for advanced endometriosis, comparing procedures performed by two junior surgeons to those performed by one senior surgeon. Importance: There are limited data on the effectiveness of mailed self-collection to increase cervical cancer screening (CCS) participation in underresourced health care settings.

The majority of low-mass ( log 10 M * / M ⊙ = 9 - 10 ) galaxies at high redshift (z > 1) appear elongated in projection. We use JWST-CEERS observations to explore the role of gravitational lensing in this puzzle. The typical galaxy-galaxy lensing shear γ ∼ 1% is too low to explain the predominance of elongated early galaxies with an ellipticity e ≈ 0.6. However, nonparametric quantile regression with Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (or BART) reveals hints of an excess of tangentially aligned source-lens pairs with γ > 10%. On larger scales, we also find evidence for weak-lensing shear. …

This thesis explores perceptions and attitudes toward genetic testing within the Muslim American community, a group often underrepresented in genomic research and public health discourse. Using a community-distributed digital survey, data was collected from 50 self-identified Muslim Americans on their familiarity with genetic testing, reproductive and ethical considerations, and the influence of religious factors. While only 18% had undergone genetic testing themselves, many were familiar through family or friends, and most expressed cautious interest—especially when results could influence future family planning. Education level, age, and religious values shaped both comfort and understanding.
