[Objective ] A colloidal carbon-labelled immunochromatographic assay with competitive inhibition was developed for the detection of marbofloxacin (MBF ) residues in milk powder and chicken.[Method ] The anti-MBF polyclonal antibody prepared in the author 's laboratory was employed to produce the colloidal carbon-labelled immunoprobe.The effects of pH of reaction system,resuspension solution,treatment solution of sample pad,standard dilution buffer,mass concentration of colloidal carbon,mass concentration of primary antibody,mass concentration of coating antigen,and mass concentration of secondary antibody on the MBF colloidal carbon-labelled immunochromatographic assay were investigated.The sensitivity,specificity,stability,and accuracy of the method were determined.[Result ] Under optimal conditions,the cut-off value of the method was …

[Objective ] A simple and sensitive detection method for Staphylococcus aureus is established for the efficient detection of this pathogen in food.[Method ] Targeting Staphylococcus aureus,a simple and sensitive fluorescent detection method for Staphylococcus aureus,EXPAR-P-AgNCs,was developed based on exponential amplification reaction (EXPAR ) combined with DNA silver nanoclusters (P-AgNCs ).A recognition probe was designed to initiate EXPAR in the presence of Staphylococcus aureus,generating a large amount of target DNA(T).The binding of T to hairpin P displaced the G-rich strand from P-AgNCs,resulting in a decrease in the relative fluorescence intensity of P-AgNCs and enabling the detection of Staphylococc us aureus.[Result ] …

[Objective ] This study aims to explore the physicochemical indicators,microbial diversity,and volatile substances in the Qupi (surface ) and Quxin (core) of high-temperature Daqu.[Method ] High-throughput sequencing and headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS ) were employed to compare the microbial diversity,volatile substances,and physicochemical indicators between Qupi and Quxin of three types of Daqu.[Result ] The moisture mass fraction in Qupi of the three types of Daqu was lower than that in Quxin (P<0.05),and the moisture mass fraction was the lowest in the Qupi of white Daqu (WP) and the highest in the Quxin of yellow Daqu (YX).The acidity of Qupi and Quxin were in the order of Quxin of black Daqu (BX) > YX > Qupi of black Daqu (BP) > Quxin of white Daqu (WX) > Qupi of yellow Daqu (YP) > WP.High-throughput sequencing results showed that Firmicutes and …

The preservation and revitalization of endangered languages, particularly those with minimal digital presence, presents significant challenges for computational linguistics. This thesis addresses these challenges by proposing novel methods for language identification and data generation, focusing on underrepresented Indigenous languages, specifically Nüshu, Native American and Native Alaskan languages.

In the first study, a COLING 2025 paper, we present NüshuRescue, an AI-driven framework designed to facilitate the preservation of Nüshu, an endangered script used exclusively by Yao women in China. Using minimal seed data, we demonstrate how GPT-4-Turbo can generate new translations, expanding a publicly available Nüshu-Chinese corpus, achieving 48.69% accuracy in …

Mammalian carnivores are vulnerable to anthropogenic pressures, including habitat modifications, disturbance, and the introduction of non‐native species. Forests throughout Madagascar are under persistent pressure from extraction of timber and non‐timber products, and conversion of forest habitat to agriculture. Yet research into the impact of anthropogenic pressures on endemic carnivores is only recent, and relatively little is known about their populations in the extreme south of the island. We sought to explore how disturbance affects the occurrence of small carnivores in lowland humid forests and their varying degrees of adaptability to human‐modified landscapes. While the exact phase diagram of the Fermi-Hubbard model remains poorly understood despite decades of progress, nearly 60 years ago Nagaoka proved that a single dopant in an otherwise half-filled Hubbard system can bring about ferromagnetism through kinetic means. The phenomenon was recently observed with ultracold atoms in triangular optical lattices. Here, we explore the kinetic ferromagnetism within the square lattice Hubbard model and its strong-coupling counterpart, the t-J model, at finite temperatures in the thermodynamic limit via numerical linked-cluster expansions. We find evidence of ferromagnetic Nagaoka polarons at dopings up to ∼30% away from half filling for a variety …

This inquiry seeks to establish that over recent of centuries Russia exhibits signs of what is termed as ‘relative backwardness.’ Drawing from Alexander Gershenkron’s (1962, 62-70) understanding of ‘backwardness in historical perspective,’ as well as Karl Marx’s ([1845] 1977, 39-43) concept of ‘historical materialism,’ this inquiry examines how successive Russian regimes sought to close the developmental gap with western countries through state-led modernization efforts. The Arctic Ocean may experience ice-free summers within the next decade, with implications for habitat, resource extraction, geopolitics, and local and global climate change. Fluorescence guided surgery (FGS) is an emerging surgical technique that aims to help surgeons identify tissue types to assist in surgical decision making - ideally providing “cut-by-color” guidance. The development of new cancer therapies focuses on widening the therapeutic ratio between tumor control and normal tissue toxicity. Over the last decade, ultra-high dose rate (UHDR) radiation therapy, commonly known as FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT), has shown promising potential to reduce normal tissue toxicity while maintaining tumor control. However, the underlying mechanisms of the FLASH effect remain poorly understood. This thesis explores the radiation-chemical basis of FLASH-RT, focusing on the role of oxygen and reactive oxygen species in modulating biological outcomes.

The genus Aspergillus comprises over 250 species of fungi. Within this genus, only a handful of species cause disease in humans. One species is Aspergillus fumigatus (A.f.), an environmentally ubiquitous, saprophytic fungal pathogen. Lung infections due to A.f. range from invasive infection to allergic forms of the disease. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is one of the most severe forms and presents as a hypersensitivity that often results in off-target damage to the surrounding airways. This inquiry seeks to establish that theoretical advances offered earlier on by one Karl Marx and some decades later by one Thorstein Veblen offer insights into forms of business sabotage. Drawing upon their writings, this inquiry considers how in the writings of Marx, already in the mid-nineteenth century surplus value extraction and pecuniary sabotage serve as structural features found in a market-based economy. Marx’s consideration of surplus labor and artificial scarcity reveals how private investment seeks to constrain production in order to preserve and enhance profitability. The philosophical systems of Plato and Lucretius use the religious experience to compel readers into their distinct philosophical versions of reality. This compulsion is necessary for philosophy. This study’s three philosophical systems reappropriate this experience from the existing structures of religion to violently produce conviction in readers. This thesis examines whether the indispensability argument justifies belief in the existence of mathematical entities. I adopt ontological naturalism, arguing that we should believe in entities that feature in our best scientific theories, which are determined through inference to the best explanation. The indispensability argument contends that because mathematical entities are explanatorily indispensable to our best scientific theories – as demonstrated by examples like the prime number explanation of cicada life cycles – we should believe they exist just as we believe in electrons and stars.

"Police discharge their firearms more often at dogs than humans, and as a profession, kill thousands of dogs every year. The number of dogs killed by police during these encounters has government officials declaring that an “epidemic” is occurring within policing itself, with some commentators referring to this trend as “puppycide” or “canicide.” The purpose of this article is to examine how the judiciary rationalizes canicide, or the police killing of dogs, and the role canicide plays in the justification of police violence. This study examines the impact of a dual-bottle whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonator on the performance of a laser structure based on a fiber ring, focusing on the modes switching and generating single- and multi-mode emissions. Through experimental analyses, we demonstrate how the unique geometry of dual-bottle resonators affects lasing behavior, providing insights that could advance applications of the proposed laser structure in telecommunications and photonic sensing systems.

Mitochondrial health relies on the membrane fission mediated by dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1). Previous structural studies of Drp1 on remodeled membranes were hampered by heterogeneity, leaving a critical gap in the understanding of the mitochondrial fission mechanisms. Here we present a cryo-electron microscopy structure of full-length human Drp1 decorated on membrane tubules. Using the reconstruction of average subtracted tubular regions (RASTR) technique, we report that Drp1 forms a locally ordered lattice along the tubule without global helical symmetry. The filaments in the lattice are similar to dynamin rungs with conserved stalk interactions. Adjacent filaments are connected by GTPase domain interactions …

Macrophages are critical custodians of the lung, orchestrating immune surveillance, maintaining tissue homeostasis, and coordinating both innate and adaptive responses. This dissertation examines their heterogeneity and specialized functions, focusing on IMs, which reside in the lung interstitium, and AMs, which occupy the airspace. Through comprehensive single-cell transcriptomic profiling of murine and human samples, we identify multiple IM and AM subsets defined by distinct chemokine, cytokine, receptor, and innate immune gene signatures. These subsets display clear divisions of labor, contributing to immune cell recruitment, tertiary lymphoid structure formation, and alveolar homeostasis.

The cingulum bundle (CB) is a group of axons supporting connectivity among several functional brain networks relevant in healthy and diseased states. The paracingulate sulcus (PCS) is present in at least one cerebral hemisphere across 70% of the population. PCS presence versus absence is linked to differences in structure and function of the anterior cingulate cortex, though the influence of PCS on the white matter of the CB remains unknown. A Compression-Based Dependence Measure For Causal Discovery By Additive Noise Models, H. J. Ong, B. G. Lim, B. R. Tiu, Renzo Roel P. Tan

In this work, we introduce a novel compression-based dependence measure (CDM) for causal discovery. Our proposed measure leverages data compression to quantify dependence, offering a new approach that is effective even with small data sizes. Through extensive simulations with general additive noise models, causal additive models, and linear non-Gaussian acyclic models, we demonstrate the relative superiority of CDM over existing methods. Additionally, we validate our approach using the cause-effect pairs benchmark dataset, where CDM shows comparable accuracy across various sample sizes. To close, we discuss the sensitivity of CDM to data scales, an issue shared by other causal discovery methods. …
