Background: Human adenovirus (HAdV) is a common cause of pediatric acute respiratory illness (ARI). HAdV-B, -C, and -E species have been associated with ARI, though relative detection frequencies in United States (U.S.) and respective roles in symptomatic respiratory infections remain unclear.

Methods: We conducted a multicenter, prospective viral surveillance study at 7 U.S. children's hospitals comprising the New Vaccine Surveillance Network from January 12, 2016 to November 30, 2019. Children < 18 years old in the emergency department or hospitalized with fever and/or respiratory symptoms were enrolled, and respiratory specimens were tested for HAdV and other viral pathogens. HAdV-positive specimens were subsequently typed using single-plex real-time PCR assays targeting sequences in the hexon gene. Demographics, clinical characteristics, and outcomes (hospitalization and supplemental oxygen use as severity indicators) were compared between HAdV-B and HAdV-C species.

Results: Of the 29 381 children with ARI, 1843 (6.3%) had HAdV detected, with 1402 specimens (76.0%) successfully typed. HAdV-C was the most frequently detected species (73.0%), followed by HAdV-B …

Background: Children have paucibacillary tuberculosis and cannot provide expectorated sputum. Invasive specimen collection, by gastric aspiration or sputum induction, has a low diagnostic yield. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance and additive yield of a novel stool-based assay in children diagnosed with tuberculosis in sub-Saharan Africa.

Methods: We conducted a prospective case-control study from October 2020 to June 2023 in Eswatini, Mozambique, and Tanzania. Background

Mechanical thrombectomy with stent retrievers has become a standard treatment for acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion. Here we present a multicenter US experience using the EmboTrap III stent retriever, the latest iteration within its class.

Methods

We retrospectively reviewed patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with the EmboTrap III device at 4 US centers. We recorded baseline demographics, clinical characteristics, and procedural details. Outcomes included first-pass effect (FPE), modified FPE (mFPE), final mTICI scores, 90-day functional outcomes, and complications.

Three kings in 2 Chronicles are explicitly compared to David in the regnal formula, namely, Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, and Josiah. Their comparison to David is significant since David is portrayed throughout 1 Chronicles as the ideal Israelite king. This study examines the possible criteria that qualified these three kings to be positive emulations of their ideal forefather by evaluating the sacred and secular activities of each Judahite king against similar activities exemplified by David in 1 Chronicles. This commentary examines the evolving landscape of cognitive warfare and argues that strategic competition is increasingly centered on influence in the cognitive domain. China is integrating advances in science and technology, including artificial intelligence, neurotechnology, and information operations into a comprehensive strategy aimed at achieving cognitive dominance over the United States and its allies. The authors describe cognitive engagement as operating “inside-out,” “outside-in,” and through combined effects that shape perceptions, decision-making, and behavior across biological, psychological, and socio-economic dimensions. The article recommends investment in AI-enabled command and control, neuroadaptive human-machine systems, cognitive readiness training, and coordinated multinational narrative dominance.

Context.—: Following the validation of a multicolor flow cytometry (MFC) assay for measurable residual disease (MRD) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), this study examines its clinical applicability.

Objective.—: To evaluate the practicality and performance of MFC-based MRD detection in AML.

Design.—: Prospectively assessed AML MRD MFC in unselected AML patients achieving morphologic remission with follow-up studies, molecular genetics, and survival data.

Results.—: Among 379 patient bone marrow samples in this cohort, an interpretable result was obtained in 359 (95%). A total of 57 of the 359 cases (16%) were positive for MRD, and the most frequently observed immunophenotype was CD34+CD117+ …

BACKGROUND Intramedullary spinal cord metastasis from local transdural invasion is an exceedingly rare event. Therefore, specific guidance on the timing, type, and extent of surgical intervention is lacking. OBSERVATIONS A 60-year-old male with a known pulmonary neuroendocrine tumor presented with 2 days of progressive lower extremity paraplegia rendering him nonambulatory. MRI demonstrated transpleural and paravertebral invasion by the mass with extension through the left T1–2 and T2–3 neural foramina causing significant epidural compression. There was also transdural invasion at T2 extending intramedullary to the C4 spinal level, with associated cord edema. Socio-emotional learning (SEL) is imperative for young children to learn prosocial skills and how to identify and regulate their emotions. Most children begin to develop these skills in early childhood and depend on caregivers and teachers to model them. However, caregiver and teacher biases related to child gender and race can limit equitable access to high-quality SEL, placing male students of color at higher risk for maladaptive coping strategies. Despite its significance, the discovery of the seismic potential of Cascadia didn't occur until 1987, when geologist Brian Atwater searched for non-traditional forms of earthquake evidence. Miniaturized, pad-printed carbon electrodes (PPCEs) offer a promising platform for antibody-type biosensors, enabling rapid and cost-effective point-of-care diagnostics. This study investigates the development, fabrication, and electrochemical performance of large and miniaturized PPCEs functionalized for antibody-type detection, with the eventual goal of detecting pancreatic cancer specific biomarkers. The PPCEs were made of silver- and carbon- based inks that were formulated to be pad printable and conductive and printed on polycarbonate film so they can be easily disposed of after use. Each PPCE was thoroughly cleaned with ethanol several times to ensure a clean base on which to adsorb antibodies and antigens. …
