Integrating Explainable Machine Learning And Transcriptomics Data Reveals Cell-Type Specific Immune Signatures Underlying Macular Degeneration, Khang Ma, Hosei Nakajima, Nipa Basak, Arko Barman, Rinki Ratnapriya

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have established key role of immune dysfunction in Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), though the precise role of immune cells remains unclear. Here, we develop an explainable machine-learning pipeline (ML) using transcriptome data of 453 donor retinas, identifying 81 genes distinguishing AMD from controls (AUC-ROC of 0.80, CI 0.70–0.92). Most of these genes were enriched in their expression within retinal glial cells, particularly microglia and astrocytes. Their role in AMD was further strengthened by cellular deconvolution, which identified distinct differences in microglia and astrocytes between normal and AMD. We corroborated these findings using independent single-cell data, where …

A Capstone Review: Bi-Lateral Growth Of Outdoor And Business Skills, Ben Casteel Jun 2025

A Capstone Review: Bi-Lateral Growth Of Outdoor And Business Skills, Ben Casteel

University Honors Theses

This paper explores the development of my leadership skills through the Portland State University School of Business and the Portland State University Outdoor Program. Drawing from my four years as a trip leader and equipment rental center coordinator and my capstone experience with Team Flamingos, the cross-disciplinary business team I was a part of, I examine how both of these experiences have shaped and grown my skills as a leader. In this paper, I analyze leadership competencies such as communication, decision-making, adaptability, and self-awareness, through the National Outdoor Leadership School's 4-7-1 Leadership Model. This model acts as a framework to …

Germanic Identity And Othering At The Inception Of Modernity: A Critical Translation Of The Geographic Addendum Of The Nuremberg Chronicle (1493), Nina Martin Jun 2025

Germanic Identity And Othering At The Inception Of Modernity: A Critical Translation Of The Geographic Addendum Of The Nuremberg Chronicle (1493), Nina Martin

University Honors Theses

The Nuremberg Chronicle (1493) is a late medieval humanist world chronicle compiled in its original Latin by Hartmann Schedel and translated into vernacular German by Georg Alt in the same year. It features exquisite woodcut illustrations from the studio of Michael Wohlgemut which bolstered the text's contemporaneous popularity among scholarly and lay audiences along with the unauthorized cheaper editions released by Johann Schönesperger within the decade. This project investigates depictions of collective identity as presented in the Geographic Addendum, a section of the endmatter discussing the peoples and lands of Europe which Schedel compiled from the writings of humanist scholar …

Knowing Remembers Joe Christmas: An Exploration Of Trauma In William Faulkner's Light In August, Kendall Boyd Jun 2025

Knowing Remembers Joe Christmas: An Exploration Of Trauma In William Faulkner's Light In August, Kendall Boyd

University Honors Theses

William Faulkner wrote Light in August in 1932, during the American prohibition and national Jim Crow laws. As a southern gothic/American modernism text, Light in August is a fictional story that takes place in the southern states of the U.S. and primarily relies on memory and ambiguity to reveal its dark themes of racism, sexual violence, and collective trauma. The novel features two separate narrators as main characters: Lena Burch and Joe Christmas. Joe Christmas, a man of mysterious heritage who lives a life of tragedy and violence, is the focus of my analysis of Light in August. Using …

Intrapersonal And Interpersonal Factors Of Participation In Physical Activity And Resistance Training In Adolescent Girls: A Narrative Review, Ben Banse-Fay Jun 2025

Intrapersonal And Interpersonal Factors Of Participation In Physical Activity And Resistance Training In Adolescent Girls: A Narrative Review, Ben Banse-Fay

University Honors Theses

Low rates of participation in physical activity and resistance training among adolescent girls are a concern due to increased health and injury risks. Adolescent girls participate in physical activity and resistance training at a lower rate than boys, which may explain higher rates of injury. Research examining physical activity of adolescent girls often utilizes an ecological framework, identifying intrapersonal, interpersonal, and environmental factors. Of these ecological levels, intrapersonal and interpersonal factors are modifiable without large costs.

Therefore, this review aimed to identify and summarize recent research that explores the intrapersonal and interpersonal factors associated with participation in physical activity and …

How Different Forms Of Exercise Affect Bone Mineral Density In Postmenopausal Women, Jonathan Mccanless Jun 2025

How Different Forms Of Exercise Affect Bone Mineral Density In Postmenopausal Women, Jonathan Mccanless

University Honors Theses

This paper analyzed 20 studies to understand how bone health in postmenopausal women is impacted by different forms of exercise. The primary aspect of bone health examined in this paper is bone mineral density (BMD). Resistance and impact training demonstrated clear signs of maintenance and increases in BMD, particularly in the lumbar spine and femoral neck. Aquatic exercise demonstrated mixed results in positively impacting BMD in a significant way, but it’s worth noting that there were still some signs of increased BMD. Impact exercise on its own can maintain BMD, and these effects can be seen in total hip BMD. …

Jurisdictional Values, Scott R. Bauries Jun 2025

Jurisdictional Values, Scott R. Bauries

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

This Article explores the values underpinning judicial decision-making in the constitutional domains of personal and legislative jurisdiction. It begins with a brief examination of value theory, emphasizing how intrinsic and teleological values shape legal frameworks and judicial outcomes. The analysis reveals that traditional jurisdictional doctrines have historically prioritized sovereignty and federalism, balancing these state-centric concerns with the individual fairness protections afforded by the Due Process Clauses. Through a detailed review of recent Supreme Court cases, the Article highlights a jurisprudential shift toward integrating additional values such as international comity, access to justice, and the mitigation of forum shopping. The Article …

Revolution By Proxy: Affordable Housing Law And Practice In California’S Ministerial Age, Colin Ryan Jun 2025

Revolution By Proxy: Affordable Housing Law And Practice In California’S Ministerial Age, Colin Ryan

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Passed in 2017 amid a historic housing shortage, California’s Senate Bill 35 offers a streamlined, ministerial approval process for affordable housing projects in jurisdictions that have missed agreed-upon targets for housing production. The law upends the prevailing—and arguably dysfunctional—model of development approval in California, which affords cities significant discretion and gives resident opponents powerful tools for delaying or defeating projects based on environmental and other concerns. To date, SB 35 has withstood legal challenges and created nearly twenty thousand new residential units. Yet the law is controversial, with some questioning its effectiveness and others decrying it as an unjustified intrusion …

Virus Against Cancer: Paradigm-Shifting Biological Concepts, Dong Ho Shin, Marta M Alonso, Candelaria Gomez-Manzano, Juan Fueyo

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Purpose of review: Virotherapy has emerged as a promising approach to cancer treatment. Over the past two decades, early-phase clinical trials have demonstrated the safety and promising efficacy of virotherapy in subsets of cancer patients. However, a significant knowledge gap needs to be filled to propel the field further and achieve substantial anti-cancer benefits for more than the current 10-20% of treated patients. This article reviews the most relevant current challenges in cancer virotherapy.

Recent findings: Recent clinical observations suggest that patients who respond to virotherapy experience a shift in their immune response from an initial or concomitant response against …

Digital Domination: How Technology Threatens Privacy Rights, Kirsten Zonkowski Jun 2025

Digital Domination: How Technology Threatens Privacy Rights, Kirsten Zonkowski

NSU Undergraduate Law Journal

This paper examines how rapid technological advancements have outpaced existing legal protections for privacy rights in both the U.S as well as world-wide. By analyzing landmark Supreme Court cases and federal legislation, it highlights the vulnerabilities individuals face from digital surveillance, data mining, and third-party data collection. The paper argues that current legal frameworks are fragmented and outdated, calling for comprehensive reforms. Recommended solutions include adopting federal privacy legislation modeled after the GDPR, passing a constitutional amendment to safeguard digital privacy, and implementing mandatory transparency and accountability measures for technology companies. These reforms are essential to preserving individual freedoms in …
