Study On Rheological Properties Of Basalt Fiber Asphalt Mastic Modified With Silane Coupling Agent, Liu Yuande, Zheng Nanxiang, Zhang Xiang, Gao Haiwei, Zhang Bowen

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

To investigate the rheological properties of basalt fiber asphalt mastic,a silane coupling agent was used as a modifier for basalt fibers, and the effects of varying fiber contents were analyzed. Cone penetration tests, bending beam rheological tests, and dynamic shear rheometer tests were conducted to evaluate the rheological properties of asphalt mastic consistency, high-temperature stability, and low-temperature cracking resistance under different temperatures and fiber contents. The findings show that the silane-coupled basalt fibers enhance the shear strength and consistency of asphalt mastic. After modification, the phase angle decreases;elastic response increases, and complex modulus improves.Adsorption capacity between fibers and asphalt increases significantly, enhancing high-temperature deformation resistance and low-temperature cracking resistance …

Internal Force Optimization In Com Pleted Stage And Construction Alignment Control Of Super Long-Span Extradosed Cable-Stayed Bridge, Ba Wenpeng

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

This paper is based on a super long-span extradosed cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 400 m.In view of the technical challenges of high negative bending moment at the quarter point of the bridge and large deformation during the cantilever assembly process in the non-cable area,a systematic solution was proposed in combination with the entire construction process. This paper proposed three schemes:permanent cable over-tensioning,temporary cable setting, and large segment closure. The bending moment ratio (λM) and structural deformation were used as quantitative indicators, and a finite element model was established to compare the three schemes. The results show that all three schemes can improve …

Applying The Learning Cycle To Introduce Research Practices In General Chemistry Lab, Teresa J. Bixby, Matthew Kubacki, Jasmine Casanova Jun 2025

Applying The Learning Cycle To Introduce Research Practices In General Chemistry Lab, Teresa J. Bixby, Matthew Kubacki, Jasmine Casanova

Chemistry Department Faculty Conferences

CUREs are a great way to engage students in research practices but can be onerous for instructors and teaching assistants to administrate and facilitate. There is added challenge in providing research experiences to students at the introductory level when they have developed limited knowledge and skills. Here we describe a more structured approach that applies the learning cycle to a traditional experiment to allow students to explore the technique, “invent” the parameters for systematic analysis, and apply the technique to a researchable question of their own construction.

Taxing Litigation Finance, Young Ran (Christine) Kim Jun 2025

Taxing Litigation Finance, Young Ran (Christine) Kim

Articles

The emerging litigation finance industry has the capacity to expand access to justice but also raises important legal and ethical questions. Although much has been said about the industry’s potential to increase frivolous lawsuits and permit improper control over a claim by the funders, scholarly discussion on the proper tax treatment of the parties involved has fallen by the wayside. The problem arises in classifying litigation finance contracts as either a nonrecourse loan, immediate sale, or variable prepaid forward contract, all of which discretely impact the timing and character of income. Unfortunately, courts have traditionally found it difficult to draw …

Discontinuous Deforma Tion Analysis Of Progressive Toppling Of Rock Slopes With Fractured Slab Structure, Yuan Sifan, Li Tonglu, Haider Mumtaz, Zhang Changliang, Li Ping

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

Progressive toppling of rock sl opes with fractured slab structures is quite common in the slopes of hydropower and highway engineering, posing a potential safety risk during both construction and operational phases. The field investigation found that progressive toppling mostly occurs on slopes with concentrated tectonic stress, intense river incision, and high steepness.Typically, these slopes are composed of hard,thinly-layered,and overthrusted rock mass with a fractured slab structure. From a macroscopic point of view, progressive toppling failure is neither a collapse nor a slide but a form of discontinuous deformation. The traditional limit equilibrium method for slope stability analysis is not suitable for evaluating such slopes. In this paper,by taking …

Semi-Flexible Pavement Structure Analysis Based On Double Modulus Theory, Pan Qinxue, Zhou Shurui, Hu Jia, Zhang Long, Song Xiaojin, Liu Hongfu

Journal of China & Foreign Highway

Semi-flexible pavement materials have significant differences in tension and compression. If the mechanical response analysis of pavement structures is conducted by using the traditional linear elastic theory with a single modulus, there will be a considerable deviation from actual situations. To analyze and optimize semi-flexible pavement structures, this paper compared the changes in key mechanical responses of pavement structures under six different semi-flexible layer positions and thickness combinations based on the double modulus theory. The results show that there is a significant difference in the calculation results of key mechanical responses of the pavement based on the double modulus theory and the single modulus theory, with …

The bubble trap has a spherical cavity and a central partition with internal passages that eliminate air bubbles effectively for extended periods of time. Flow testing was performed in a closed-loop microfluidic system to demonstrate effectiveness and robustness of the bubble trap. Flow rate was continually monitored on a stationary benchtop and also in simulated microgravity conditions on a 3-D random positioning machine. Data collected from flow sensors placed fore and aft of the bubble trap confirmed that randomly occurring bubbles were effectively eliminated by the trap …

Unifying Explainability And Machine Learning: Towards Trustworthy And Plausible Explanations Without Post-Hoc Manipulations, Ian E. Nielsen Jun 2025

Unifying Explainability And Machine Learning: Towards Trustworthy And Plausible Explanations Without Post-Hoc Manipulations, Ian E. Nielsen

Theses and Dissertations

The deployment of machine learning (ML) in safety-critical domains is impeded by the black-box nature of deep learning models. Although these models excel at discerning complex patterns, their opacity undermines trust, limiting their use for high-stakes tasks. This thesis advances the field of eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) by introducing novel methods to evaluate and enhance model interpretability, ensuring explanations are both faithful (accurate to the model’s reasoning) and plausible (intelligible to human users). A key challenge in XAI is the unreliability of post-hoc explanation methods. To address this, we propose (1) quantitative evaluation metrics for assessing the faithfulness of local …

The Only Constant Is Change: The Role Of Genetic Diversification In Cancer And Beyond, Malgorzata Tyczynska Weh Jun 2025

The Only Constant Is Change: The Role Of Genetic Diversification In Cancer And Beyond, Malgorzata Tyczynska Weh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Genetic diversification, the process by which genetic variation arises in a population, is fundamental to evolution by natural selection. Mutation, a central diversification process, fuels adaptation across species, including in cancer. Yet most new mutations are neutral or deleterious on cell fitness, raising the question of how mutation-driven adaptation persists. To explore this paradox, I developed a spatial agent-based model (ABM) in which population fitness emerges from individual cells acquiring mutations at varied rates and with diverse fitness effects. I evaluated model behavior across adaptive states, mutation rates, and distributions of fitness effects. The results show that high mutation rates …

Benchmarking Model Predictive Control And Reinforcement Learning-Based Control For Legged Robot Locomotion In Mujoco Simulation, Shivayogi Akki, Tan Chen

Michigan Tech Publications

Model Predictive Control (MPC) and Reinforcement Learning (RL) are two prominent strategies for controlling legged robots. RL learns control policies through system interaction, adapting to various scenarios, whereas MPC relies on a predefined mathematical model to solve optimization problems in real-time. Despite their widespread use, there is a lack of direct comparative analysis under standardized conditions. This work addresses this gap by benchmarking MPC and RL controllers on a Unitree Go1 quadruped robot within the MuJoCo simulation environment, focusing on a standardized task, straight walking at a constant velocity. Performance is evaluated based on disturbance rejection, energy efficiency, and terrain …

Quality Improvement Project Enhance Self-Efficacy And Knowledge In Pediatric Emergency Care For Nurses In An Adult Acute Care Facility, Tiffany Daniel Jun 2025

Quality Improvement Project Enhance Self-Efficacy And Knowledge In Pediatric Emergency Care For Nurses In An Adult Acute Care Facility, Tiffany Daniel

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project addresses the significant gap in emergency nursing preparedness for managing pediatric emergencies in adult-focused emergency departments. A quasi-experimental pre/ post intervention design was used to implement a pediatric-specific training intervention consisting of didactic education and simulation-based learning. A total of 87 night shift ED nurses participated. Knowledge and self-efficacy were measured using pre- and post-intervention surveys and assessments. The training equipped nurses with critical skills to manage pediatric emergencies more confidently and competently, addressing both clinical and emotional barriers. Knowledge scores significantly improved, t = -20.45, p < 0.001, with post-test means rising from 5.56 (SD = 1.58) to 9.03 (SD = 0.32). Post-intervention self-efficacy scores also increased significantly, t(86) = -21.57, p < .001, indicating greater confidence in pediatric emergency care. These findings validate the effectiveness of structured pediatric emergency training in enhancing nurse competency and self-efficacy. Lewin's change theory and Newman’s systems model guided this quality improvement project. The results support the continuation of the program in population-specific education and simulation as part of annual competency development. This project demonstrated that targeted pediatric training improves nurse preparedness and has the potential to enhance patient outcomes in a setting traditionally focused on adult care.

Gatekeeper Training As A Form Of Suicide Prevention: An Evaluation Of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (Asist), Sarah E. Pardue-Bourgeois Jun 2025

Gatekeeper Training As A Form Of Suicide Prevention: An Evaluation Of Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (Asist), Sarah E. Pardue-Bourgeois

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is the most widely used gatekeeper training (McAuliffe & Perry, 2007) and the literature examining its effects shows strong support for self-reported changes in attitudes and knowledge regarding suicide, and confidence to intervene with a person with thoughts of suicide (Gould et al., 2013; Shannonhouse et al., 2017a; Shannonhouse et al., 2017b; Shannonhouse et al., 2019). However, no research currently exists that investigates whether individuals trained in ASIST can provide the suicide-specific intervention skills post-training. Thus, the current study sought to extend the current literature by broadly investigating the following aims. Study aims investigated …

Martingale Methods For Structural Change Detection And Feature Attribution In Dynamic Networks, Izhar Ali Jun 2025

Martingale Methods For Structural Change Detection And Feature Attribution In Dynamic Networks, Izhar Ali

Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic networks undergo structural changes when their generative process shifts at a change-point. We need to detect this change-point with minimal delay while identifying its underlying causes. This is an optimization problem of minimizing the expected detection delay while controlling the false alarm probability below a threshold---leading to three critical challenges: non-parametric detection without distributional assumptions, exact feature attribution, and early detection with rigorous false alarm control. We construct additive martingale statistics from multiple graph features using conformal prediction, providing false alarm guarantees via Ville's inequality. Our key theoretical contribution proves the Martingale-Shapley equivalence: each feature's martingale value equals its …

Biosecurity Research Articles

As international trade and travel increase around the world, invasive species detections and incursions are increasing in frequency. Here we document the first detection and incursion within Australia by the Polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB), Euwallacea fornicatus (Eichhoff, 1868) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), an ambrosia beetle, and two of the associated fungal species; Fusarium sp. [AF18], and Graphium euwallaceae. All three exotic species were detected in a confined region within Perth, Western Australia, and represent a co-invasion. This multispecies incursion into one of the world’s most remote cities highlights the rapid increase in biological invasions globally and the pressures that urban, agricultural, …

Introduction Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) have been linked with increased risk for maternal and offspring complications in high-income settings. However, in resource-limited settings, studies with robust measurement of HDP, including severity and timing, and perinatal outcomes are limited.

Methods We analysed data from two prospective cohorts of nulliparous women in India (n=10 570 pregnancies) and Tanzania (n=10 299 pregnancies) who were enrolled in calcium supplementation trials and had blood pressure and proteinuria assessments throughout pregnancy and at the time of labour and delivery. Generalised estimating equations were used to assess the relationship between HDP severity categories (gestational hypertension, preeclampsia …
