Preparation, Development, And Refinement Of The Interview Protocol In Qualitative Research, David C. Coker, Adebowale Akande
Preparation, Development, And Refinement Of The Interview Protocol In Qualitative Research, David C. Coker, Adebowale Akande
The Qualitative Report
Interview protocols are by far the most common method utilized in qualitative research data collection. Novice and experienced researchers, from working on dissertations to grant proposals or other publications, often lack detailed interview design methods, as many educational programs do not require specific coursework on interview protocols and question development. To improve qualitative research, we make a proposal to incorporate an interdisciplinary approach that operationalizes three stages: preparation, development, and refinement. Preparation involves mapping the extant literature to define broad, narrow, and focused topics to write actionable standards, goals, and objectives. Development uses instructional design and educational psychology to construct …

Access To Information On Toddler Family Development Program And Family Participation In Child Growth And Development, Dita Dhammayanti, Demsa Simbolon, Lissa Ervina, Yusran Fauzi
Kesmas
The comprehension of the Toddler Family Development (TFD) Program among families in Indonesia remains limited, likely due to insufficient access to information and low participation rates. Limited participation can negatively affect a family’s ability to support optimal child growth and development. This study examined the relationship between access to information on the TFD Program and family participation in child growth and development. Using secondary data from the 2019 Program Performance and Accountability Survey in Indonesia, the cross-sectional analysis included 21,497 respondents. The results revealed an association between access to information on the TFD Program and family participation in child growth …
Compound-Specific Isotope Records Of Dust Provenance And Hydroclimate In The North Pacific And Marginal Seas Of East Asia: Integrating N-Alkane Δ13c And Δd With Standardized Analytical Frameworks, Julian W. Traphagan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation presents advancements in compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) through methodological innovation and paleoclimate reconstruction in Central and East Asia. Utilizing plant wax n-alkanes from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sediment cores, this research reconstructs atmospheric circulation shifts responding to tectonic evolution and climate transitions since the Late Miocene.
Chapter 1 investigates hydrogen isotope compositions (δDwax) from IODP U1430 (Sea of Japan), ODP 886, and ODP 1208 (North Pacific) to trace dust provenance and hydroclimate changes since ~13 Ma. Results reveal persistently segmented source-to-sink systems: the Sea of Japan dominated by westerly …

OBJECTIVE: The Stages of Objective Memory Impairment (SOMI) system, based on the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT), is a potential marker of subtle cognitive impairment in cognitively normal persons defined by a Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) = 0. We investigated SOMI's ability to predict incident cognitive impairment (CDR >0) in combination with demographic features and neuroimaging biomarkers.
METHODS: Cognitively unimpaired participants (CDR = 0) from the Harvard Aging Brain Study had baseline FCSRT scores, MRI, FDG-PET, and PiB-PET as well as follow-up CDRs for 5 years. Cox proportional hazards models with correction for multiple testing assessed the predictive …

School of Medicine Publications
Dengue virus infection is increasingly recognized in South Texas, particularly in areas bordering Mexico. Although many cases are mild and self-limiting, dengue can present with atypical features, including hematological abnormalities and bleeding, even in the absence of plasma leakage. A 22-year-old Hispanic woman presented to a hospital in South Texas with hematemesis, fever, and gastrointestinal symptoms following travel to northeastern Mexico (Monterrey, Nuevo Leon). Initial laboratory workup revealed severe leukopenia and neutropenia, mild thrombocytopenia, and elevated liver enzymes, but no evidence of plasma leakage. A bone marrow biopsy was performed due to persistent cytopenias, revealing a reactive process consistent with …

In silico perturbation models, computational methods that can predict cellular responses to perturbations, present an opportunity to reduce the need for costly and time-intensive in vitro experiments. Many recently proposed models predict high-dimensional cellular responses, such as gene or protein expression to perturbations such as gene knockout or drugs. However, evaluating in silico performance has largely relied on metrics such as $R^{2}$, which assess overall prediction accuracy but fail to capture biologically significant outcomes like the identification of differentially expressed (DE) genes. In this study, we present a novel evaluation framework that introduces the AUPRC metric to assess the precision …

Indeterminate pulmonary nodules (IPNs), which are nodules that cannot be classified as definitively benign or malignant at the time of detection, are now diagnosed on the order of millions per year. Management of IPNs remains heavily debated, and routine practice ultimately involves some balance of overall clinical risk assessment and additional diagnostic tests or procedures which may generate significant risk, cost, and worry. Biomarkers are biologically based tests or indicators capable of accurately characterizing the physiologic properties of homeostasis and disease that are not otherwise easily evaluated by the clinician. Accurate biomarkers thereby serve as reliable surrogates for biological aberrancy, …

A Comparison Of A Hyper-Heuristic And An Ea On The Portfolio Optimisation Problem, Rahul Soni, Matthew Craven, David Walker
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We analyse a selection hyper-heuristic (SHH) and NSGAII for the multi-objective cardinality constrained portfolio optimisation problem, an NP-hard problem addressing the asset allocation trade-off between return and risk under constraints of the number of assets. We evaluated the performance of the SHH and NSGA-II for cardinality constraints K = {2, 5}. Our results are competitive with those of NSGA-II.

Bacterial Identification And Antibiotic Sensitivity Profiles From Captive Birds At Taipei Zoo, Younjung Chang, I-Li Liu, Jane-Fang Yu, Lih-Chiann Wang
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Bacterial infections are common in zoo birds. They may be caused by pathogenic bacteria or opportunistic bacteria due to trauma or stress-induced immune compromise. Improper use of antibiotics contributes to the development of resistant bacteria, making treatment complicated or ineffective. However, comprehensive clinical investigations into bacterial prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility in zoo-captive birds remain limited. This study identified the bacterial species present in captive diseased birds at the zoo and conducted a 12-year analysis of their antibiotic susceptibility profiles. The specimens from 48 birds at Taipei Zoo from 2006 to 2017 were submitted to a commercial reference laboratory for bacterial …
Troubling Trigger Warnings: Toward An Informed Praxis Of Care Within Intercollegiate Forensics, Grace P. Smith, Mallory L. Marsh
Troubling Trigger Warnings: Toward An Informed Praxis Of Care Within Intercollegiate Forensics, Grace P. Smith, Mallory L. Marsh
Studies in Debate and Oratory
In light of widespread (mis)use of trigger warnings, content warnings, and content notes in intercollegiate competitive speech, in this essay we interrogate the implementation of these devices and propose an intervention to ensure the activity moves toward a better-informed praxis to accomplish its goal of community care. By identifying the activity’s current propensity for misused warnings, missed messages, a misrepresentation of safety, and misguided performances, our intervention aspires to ensure these important warnings are more thoughtfully employed so as to limit potential harm to our messages, our community members, our activity, and our collective educational aim toward advocacy.

Developed through an iterative, culturally sensitive process, the toolkit is co-informed by IENs and …
The Female Body In Visual Narratives, Dolly Sharma
The Female Body In Visual Narratives, Dolly Sharma
Journal of Gender, Ethnic, and Cross-Cultural Studies
When a photographer seeks to capture the culture of a particular place inhabited by a minority group in society, a pertinent question arises as to how one might capture the female body in ways that avoid eroticisation while still conveying the photographer’s intent. The way photographers approach the Himalayan and Indian regions is particularly complex when they must decide whether to ask women to pose themselves in order to frame the multiple narratives that emerge out of a female body—such as motherhood, nurturing an infant, ornamentation and adornment, and the bodily manifestations of patriarchal and prejudicial practices. Photographer Olivier Föllmi, …

Refashioning The Meanings Of Dress In Palestinian Transnational Communities, Enaya Othman
Journal of Gender, Ethnic, and Cross-Cultural Studies
This paper examines how Palestinian women in both the homeland and diaspora contexts have sustained and redefined cultural heritage through tatreez embroidery and revitalized the traditional thob since 1948. As designers, artisans, and entrepreneurs, they have transformed cultural dress into a site of socio-political agency, economic empowerment, and national identity-making. Their work not only preserves inherited forms but also recasts them as living cultural practices that resist colonial erasure and counter Orientalist and Western feminist narratives portraying Arab and Muslim women as passive. From post-Nakba efforts to safeguard thobs as tangible material testaments of Palestinian life to contemporary hybrid fashion …
The Layers Of Trauma In Gisella Perl’S I Was A Doctor In Auschwitz, Tiffany Sidders
The Layers Of Trauma In Gisella Perl’S I Was A Doctor In Auschwitz, Tiffany Sidders
Journal of Gender, Ethnic, and Cross-Cultural Studies
Contemporary trauma theory argues that trauma operates in a binary, linear fashion that represents healing from a crisis. As one of the foremost trauma theorists, Cathy Caruth situates trauma within a binary framework of either victim or perpetrator but does not fully account for victims who became perpetrators or those who perpetrated for survival—or for the survival of others. One example of such a figure is Gisella Perl. In her memoir I Was a Doctor in Auschwitz, Perl describes multiple layers of trauma that create a deeper connection to her emotions and her lived experience in Auschwitz. Unlike other …

Constructing Gender Disparity Through Culture: A Socio-Pragmatic Study Of Impoliteness, Indirectness And Implicature In Igbo Female Degrading Proverbs, Uche Oboko Dr, Grace Ikechukwu
Journal of Gender, Ethnic, and Cross-Cultural Studies
Igbo proverbs are valuable expressions that unravel linguistic idiosyncrasies and project the essential principles of life. This study examines the extent to which fifty Igbo proverbs that contain implicit impoliteness imports and implicature are used indirectly to demean women and create bias against them in the Igbo socio-cultural setting. In this qualitative research, the fifty Igbo proverbs were selected based on their contents from the five Igbo-speaking states in the southeastern part of Nigeria (Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo). The proverbs were translated from the Igbo language to the English language, interpreted, and analyzed. The analysis was conducted using …

Prophetic law is an ancient legal framework rooted in divine commandments, such as God's Ten Commandments to Moses, as well as Christian and Islamic laws, nowadays commonly referred to as religious law. The meaning of prophetic law is religious law from Abrahamic religions. Particularly, Christian law has significantly influenced Western civilization, with its impact extending to regions like South Africa besides customary law. Similarly, Islamic law has also left a lasting impression on Indonesia's legal system besides customary law. This article employs a comparative law method to analyze the constitutions of Indonesia and South Africa, focusing on the legalization of …

Trade restrictions are tools that countries often use to safeguard national interests, including economic stability, national security, and public welfare. However, under the World Trade Organization (WTO) framework-especially the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)-many such restrictions violate core principles such as non-discrimination (Articles I and III), the prohibition of quantitative restrictions (Article XI), and rules governing exceptions (Articles XX and XXI). This article examines why trade restrictions frequently fail in WTO dispute settlement by analyzing the substantive and procedural requirements under WTO law. Through a normative legal approach, it studies GATT provisions, WTO agreements, and case decisions-particularly the …

The application of an open legal policy in the testing of legislative norms by the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia often leads to legal uncertainty due to the lack of clear criteria. The variation in the approaches taken by judges in interpreting legislative policies undermines legal certainty and diminishes the credibility of constitutional reviews. This research aims to evaluate the criteria of open legal policy that can serve as a basis for the Constitutional Court to assess the constitutionality of policies. This study employs a normative legal approach that examines theories, principles, and relevant legal rules in testing …

The main issue raised in this article is the vagueness of the norm of worker competitiveness in the Indonesian Foundation Law. In achieving its aims, a foundation will face problems related to its own sustainability. Charitable activities that it is engaged in are believed to threaten its sustainability, in addition to achieve fairness both for foundation as employer and worker as employee, norm of worker performance in the form of wage based on performance are needed. Such an issue may be solved by reforming the Foundation Law with the adoption of a performance-based approach, similar to the Job Creation Law. …

This article examines how the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia (the Court) constructs its argumentation regarding the limitation and derogation of human rights. The primary issue is how the Court interprets and operationalises the limitation clause under the Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia to derogate from and limit human rights. This article also illustrates how the Court applies the derogation and limitation clauses to freedom of religion, the right against retroactive prosecution and the death penalty, the right of women to stand for election, and the right to freedom of expression. The Court has never ruled on …

Medical Students Trained In Emotional Intelligence Seem To Be More Apprehensive Of Artificial Intelligence In Healthcare, Austin P. Runde, Shambhavi Mishra, Marina Feffer, Ramzan Shahid
School of Medicine
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is becoming increasingly widespread. While AI has been touted to reduce burnout and improve outcomes, its potential to undermine the doctor-patient relationship has been recognized. It is not known what future physicians believe regarding AI in healthcare and whether formal training on emotional intelligence and resilience (EIR) affects their opinion. Our medical students were asked to anonymously and voluntarily complete a 12-item survey regarding the potential impact of AI on the doctor-patient relationship (IRB #219038). Results were summarized as means and standard deviations, stratified by whether students did (EIR+) or …

Revisiting Kin And Ethnic Favoritism In The Bribery Experiment, Mahsa Akbari, Duman Bahrami-Rad, Erik O. Kimbrough
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
We report a conceptual replication of Akbari et al. (2020), who study the impact of co-ethnicity and kinship on behavior in an experimental “bribery game”. In the game, player A can offer a bribe to B, who can help A by inefficiently transferring resources from passive third-party C. We replicate the finding that by varying the relatedness of A, B and C, we can substantially modulate the willingness of A to offer the bribe and the willingness of B to reciprocate the bribe by harming C. The findings are consistent with theories of kin altruism and ethnic favoritism.
