Active galactic nucleus disks have been proposed as a possibly dominant location of the mergers of binary black holes detected by gravitational wave observatories. The nonlinear interactions between stellar mass black holes and disk gas determine when binaries will form from single objects on nearby orbits. Prior work has used smoothed particle hydrodynamics models in an isothermal disk to study this problem. However, the local equation of state near the midplane of an optically thick accretion disk is adiabatic rather than isothermal, even if the radiative equilibrium temperature is azimuthally isothermal. A current-biased mesa patterned into the surface of a single crystal will produce electromagnetic radiation in the terahertz regime due to the naturally occurring Josephson junctions formed by the stacks of superconducting cuprate oxide planes in the material separated by insulating BiO and SrO barrier layers. The study of gas giants around low-mass stars offers important insight into planet formation. Core accretion models predict that these planets should have a low likelihood of forming due to the limited disk masses of their host low-mass stars. However, NASA space missions such as Kepler and TESS have revealed an emerging population of Saturn- and Jupiter-like planets around M-dwarfs (referred to as giant exoplanets orbiting M-dwarfs or GEMS) that challenge these expectations. This thesis investigates the detection, confirmation, and analysis of GEMS through pipeline development and a detailed analysis of two systems.

This study examines how native phonological experience influences the brain’s response to speech sounds in Turkish-English late bilinguals and English monolinguals. We asked whether neural responses reflecting encoding of auditory information would be sensitive to language specific experience. Using event-related potentials (ERPs), and specifically, the Acoustic Change Complex (ACC) we measured neural responses to four stimuli, /u/, /ua/, /iu/, and /ia/, where vowel quality changes for three of these. We employ molecular dynamics simulations to study the hydration-dependent structural dynamics of homopolymer peptides. Introduction: The objective of this study was to assess treatment response to ixekizumab, an interleukin-17A antagonist, by shorter versus longer symptom duration (< 5 years vs. ≥ 5 years) in patients with radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (r-axSpA) and non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA) up to 52 weeks.

Methods: This post hoc analysis used data from three randomized, placebo-controlled trials including patients with r-axSpA from COAST-V [biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (bDMARD)-naïve] and COAST-W (tumor necrosis factor inhibitor-experienced) and patients with nr-axSpA from COAST-X (bDMARD-naïve). Patients received ixekizumab (80 mg every 2 or 4 weeks) or placebo through Week 16 and ixekizumab to Week 52. OBJECTIVE: Dravet Syndrome (DS) is a developmental and epileptic encephalopathy that is characterized by severe, prolonged motor seizures and high resistance to multiple antiseizure medications (ASMs) with multiple comorbidities. However, the effects of such disparities in accessing life-saving treatments remain incompletely characterized. Here we explore the impact of disparities on access to endovascular treatments for large vessel occlusion acute ischemic stroke.

Methods: From our prospectively maintained multihospital registry, we identified patients with large vessel occlusion acute ischemic stroke from January 2019-June 2020. Background: Achieving excellent recanalization (Modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction 2c/3) in fewer attempts improves clinical outcomes. Previous studies suggest that switching techniques after a failed first pass may enhance reperfusion rates. This study evaluates whether technique switching improves subsequent reperfusion in a large multicenter registry.

Methods: We analyzed retrospective and prospective SVIN (Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology) registry data from 12 US centers (October 2014-December 2021) involving endovascular therapy for M1 or internal carotid artery-terminus (ICA-T) occlusions. Vascular remodeling is a complex process involving the coordinated actions of multiple cellular signaling pathways in various cell types, leading to structural and functional changes in blood vessels. These changes can be adaptive, as in wound healing, or maladaptive, as seen in chronic vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and retinopathy. Exchange proteins directly activated by cAMP (EPACs) are key players in cAMP-mediated cell signaling, distinct from the more traditionally studied protein kinase A pathway. Objective: We aimed to compare the progression of systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) based on serological status.

Methods: In a posthoc analysis of the SENSCIS trial (nintedanib vs placebo in SSc-ILD; ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02597933), we analyzed the rate of decline in forced vital capacity (FVC) over 52 weeks in 3 subsets: (1) positive for anticentromere antibody (ACA), (2) positive for anti-RNA polymerase III antibody (ARA), and (3) negative for ACA, ARA, and antitopoisomerase I antibody (ATA).

Introduction: Bilateral internal mammary arteries (BIMAs) are the most advanced surgical option for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). This study compares outcomes between patients receiving skeletonized BIMAs as in situ grafts for different coronary territories and those undergoing CABG with a single internal mammary artery (SIMA).

Methods: Between 2013 and 2023, 7543 patients underwent CABG for multivessel coronary artery disease at our institution. BIMA grafting was performed in 1133 patients (15.02%), with in situ BIMA grafting in 283 patients (3.75%). Introduction: Biomarkers are essential for monitoring the progression of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Although dysregulated brain lipid metabolism, particularly sphingolipids enriched in the nervous system, is a key feature of neurodegeneration, plasma lipids remain underexplored as biomarkers compared to imaging and serum proteins.

Methods: We examined plasma lipidomes using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) from individuals carrying pathogenic variants linked to autosomal dominant FTD (GRN, C9orf72, MAPT) and non-carriers.

Results: FTD subjects exhibited increased plasma levels of gangliosides (GM3(d18:1_16:0), GM3(d18:1_24:1)), ceramide Cer(d18:1_23:0), and select polyunsaturated triacylglycerols. This dissertation proposes an expansive, interspecies definition of performance that uses behavior rather than cognition as the decisive feature and illustrates how such a definition can reshape our approach to theatre and performance history. Using the concept of responsivity, which refers to the embodied and affective ways that humans and non-human animals acknowledge and react to one another, I trace human–animal interactions across a variety of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century performance genres, from the aristocratic stag hunt and entertainments involving trained animals to the plays of Molière and Shakespeare.
