Methods For Meaningful Connection: Supporting Teacher-Child Relationships In Early Care And Education, Sheila Smith, Maribel Granja, Cristina Medellin, Mark Nagasawa
Straus Center for Young Children & Families
This report discusses a combined professional development/exploratory research project focused on how to support relationships between early childhood educators and children. The project piloted the Teacher Reflection Tool (TRT), a very brief reflection tool, paired with a community of practice approach with 19 early childhood educators across 10 classrooms. Among the lessons learned were that the participants:
- Viewed positive relationships with children as family-like and individualized
- Observed that their relationships with parents influenced relationships with children
- Found that the TRT helped them to notice and reflect on their interactions with children in new ways
Among the recommendations that emerged were: …

Active Implement Steering Performance For Hitch And Wheeled Steering, Travis A. Burgers, Ansh V. Rao, Luke P. Pucket
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Automatic vehicle guidance is prevalent for agricultural tractors. An unguided implement being pulled by a tractor can deviate from the desired path by varying soil conditions and gravity, e.g., on a sidehill (which causes tractor roll) or curve. The deviation from the guidance path will cause navigation error, and seed and fertilizer deviations can cause yield reductions. There are some commercial active implement guidance systems, but their steering performance was primarily reported on flat ground and not well-reported on side hills. CNH Industrial developed an active implement guidance system, which was used on four hitch steering (row-crop planters and strip …

Energy Burden: Exploring The Intersection Of Race, Income, And Community Characteristics Across The United States, George C. Homsy, Ki Eun Kang
Energy Burden: Exploring The Intersection Of Race, Income, And Community Characteristics Across The United States, George C. Homsy, Ki Eun Kang
Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship
Household energy burden is a simple concept with complicated causes. Energy burden measures the percentage of income spent by a household on energy for heating, lighting, air conditioning, cooking, etc. Households with greater energy burdens may have to make tradeoffs between paying utility bills and medical, housing, or other expenses. Some limited quantitative and case study research indicates that underprivileged groups suffer larger energy burdens, often attributed to lower income levels. Our study is the first to examine the phenomenon nationally as well as investigate the drivers of energy burden on households across the United States. Our examination of energy …
Dice Math And Probability, Warren Campbell
Dice Math And Probability, Warren Campbell
SEAS Faculty Publications
The manufacture of dice for tabletop games is a billion-dollar industry. In gaming circles and online forums, the concept of “cursed dice” is a popular topic. Dice are inherently unfair due to the difficulty of manufacturing them with perfect geometric tolerances and uniform material densities. A common method for testing dice fairness is the chi-square statistic, which is typically assumed to follow the chi-square distribution. However, this assumption is only asymptotically valid.
Exact distributions of the statistic can be computed for dice with few sides and a limited number of rolls—such as 2-sided (D2) and 4-sided (D4) dice—but the computational …

General - Animal Protection
The purpose of this study is to understand how animal advocates and non-advocates who are Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC), along with leaders of U.S. farmed animal advocacy organizations, perceive inclusion in the U.S. farmed animal protection movement. Based on interviews with BIPOC and non-BIPOC participants, we aim to identify potential opportunities and barriers for the creation of a more inclusive farmed animal protection movement.
