Aedes Aegypti In The City Of Córdoba: Spatial Distribution And Habitat Suitability Drivers, Elisabet M. Benitez, Florencia Sangermano, Francisco F. Ludueña-Almeida, Walter R. Almirón, Elizabet L. Estallo
Geography
Background: According to the World Health Organization, dengue is among the top ten global health threats. The invasion of new sites by Aedes aegypti and their permanence depends on environmental characteristics of the site. Therefore, the objective was to understand the environmental characteristics that affect Ae. aegypti distribution in Córdoba city, Argentina. Methods: This evaluation was carried out through species distribution models, using maximum entropy modeling technique, incorporating a set of environmental variables known to influence the presence and suitability of Ae. aegypti habitats. The factors evaluated included both meteorological variables, such as minimum and maximum temperature and average precipitation, …

From The Great Recession To The Post-Covid 19 Pandemic U.S. Municipal Fiscal Condition: “Austerity Urbanism,” “Pragmatic Municipalism” And On-Going Explanatory Challenges, Mark Davidson, Kevin Ward
Geography
How much did the Great Recession change U.S. municipal budgetary and fiscal governance? According to an academic literature that subsequently emerged, the period saw a combination of both change and continuity. The work offered two distinct ways to explain and understand the emerging context: austerity urbanism and pragmatic municipalism. This paper reviews these explanations with the goal of showing how and why they developed contrasting conceptualizations. We argue differing epistemological approaches underpin the two competing approaches. Understanding these differences is, we argue, critical for moving forward. The COVID 19 pandemic saw another round of changes to U.S. municipal budgetary and …

Gw250114: Testing Hawking’S Area Law And The Kerr Nature Of Black Holes, Jaclyn (Jax) Sanders, Ligo-Virgo-Kagra (Lvk)
Physics Faculty Research and Publications
The gravitational-wave signal GW250114 was observed by the two LIGO detectors with a network matched-filter signal-to-noise ratio of 80. The signal was emitted by the coalescence of two black holes with near-equal masses 𝑚1=33.6+1.2 −0.8𝑀⊙ and 𝑚2=32.2+0.8 −1.3𝑀⊙, and small spins 𝜒1,2≤0.26 (90% credibility) and negligible eccentricity 𝑒≤0.03. Postmerger data excluding the peak region are consistent with the dominant quadrupolar (ℓ=|𝑚|=2) mode of a Kerr black hole and its first overtone. We constrain the modes’ frequencies to ±30% of the Kerr spectrum, providing a test of the remnant’s Kerr nature. We also examine Hawking’s area law, …

Prior studies of halobenzene–ammonia complexes have shown that the nature of the cationic intermediate (i.e., Wheland-type vs ion-radical) may play a key role in determining the reaction products. To probe this link, we report here the reaction dynamics of the chlorobenzene-ammonia 1:1 complex (PhCl···NH3) using product ion imaging following two-color resonant two-photon ionization. A threshold value of 8.863 ± 0.008 eV was determined for the appearance of protonated aniline, which accompanies Cl atom loss and is the dominant product channel at energies near threshold. Scanning down to energies close to threshold, we find no evidence for a roaming …

Performance Evaluation Of Kytc Bridge Deck Overlays Used For Maintenance Activities, Sudhir Palle, Christopher Goff
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
State departments of transportation use bridge deck overlay systems to prolong bridge deck service lives. Consisting of a thin layer of material applied to a concrete bridge deck surface, overlays form a protective barrier that improves ride quality, protects embedded reinforcement from harsh environmental conditions, enhances structure durability, and improves deck drainage. Over the past 20 years, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has made significant investments in overlays, rehabilitating nearly 5,000 bridge decks with them — roughly 1/3 of all bridges statewide. Given the significant investment in overlays, and the fact they degrade over time — eventually re-exposing bridge …

Archaeological wood requires effective conservation to prevent further degradation, and traditional modifications such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) have limitations, including hygroscopicity and chemical degradation over time. To explore alternative modification, this study was conducted to investigate the suitability of humins, crosslinked with different concentrations of succinic acid (SA), to protect archaeological elm wood from the Agapia Monastery against water and to determine the modification mechanism. Key parameters such as dimensional stability, moisture sorption isotherms, and determination of accessible hydroxy groups as a function of humination modification were analyzed using dynamic vapor sorption (DVS). The modification mechanism was studied by microstructural …

The standard model of cosmology has provided a good phenomenological description of a wide range of observations both at astrophysical and cosmological scales for several decades. This concordance model is constructed by a universal cosmological constant and supported by a matter sector described by the standard model of particle physics and a cold dark matter contribution, as well as very early-time inflationary physics, and underpinned by gravitation through general relativity. There have always been open questions about the soundness of the foundations of the standard model. However, recent years have shown that there may also be questions from the observational …
Challenges And Opportunities In Reducing Risk Of Diabetes-Related Cardiovascular Disease: Making Every Contact Count, Michelle Clapham
Challenges And Opportunities In Reducing Risk Of Diabetes-Related Cardiovascular Disease: Making Every Contact Count, Michelle Clapham
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Despite recent Government initiatives to reduce rates, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes isexpected to continue rising to almost 10% of the population by 2035. Complications of type 2diabetes, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), contribute to approximately 22 000 deathsannually in England, indicating a need for population health management through preventativehealthcare. The Making Every Contact Count (MECC) initiative recommends the building ofpreventative strategies into routine primary care appointments to reduce modifiable risk factorsassociated with both type 2 diabetes and CVD. This article explores the unique opportunitiesgeneral practice nurses have to promote primary and secondary prevention of CVD.
