Introduction Body armor is an important piece of protective equipment for warfighters in battlefield environments. With more women now filling military roles, body armor designs may need to be further refined to accommodate the female anatomy instead of the male-based unisex designs. Unisex designs have been found to have negative effects on female warfighter performance, resulting in discomfort, breathing difficulty, and air gaps forming between the armor and torso. This study aimed to investigate increased injury risk because of air gaps from shock wave exposure on warfighters wearing nonform-fitting armor and the influence of material properties. Co-infection by intestinal helminths and Plasmodium spp. may be common in endemic communities. In 2003, Uganda instituted a national deworming program, with anti-helminth medication provided twice annually to children 6 months to 5 years of age, but few follow-up studies have been conducted. Several studies have identified a relationship between helminth infection, Plasmodium spp. infection and malaria severity. However, the relationship is not well defined, and results are inconclusive. Since the Reagan era, American economic policy has amounted to self-colonization. Democratic majorities have consistently supported legal regimes that have enabled corporations to extract the lion’s share of the gains from trade from the public. For example, they have supported a corporate law regime that denies the public democratic control over the behavior of corporations and instead gives dictatorial powers to shareholders and managers. This past January, in conjunction with the issuance of a final regulation (T.D. 10022) that treats income from defined cloud transactions as income from services, Treasury and the IRS released a proposed regulation (REG-107420-24) on the sourcing of that income. In 2019 a Treasury official had asked the tax community for feedback on whether specific cloud transaction sourcing rules were needed, and the preamble to a 2019 proposed regulation asked for comments on “administrable rules for sourcing income from cloud transactions in a manner consistent with sections 861 through 865.” The feedback was “split almost evenly with regard to whether …

OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate classification criteria for paediatric chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) jointly supported by the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) and the American College of Rheumatology (ACR).

METHODS: This international initiative had 4 phases: (1) candidate items were proposed in a survey of paediatric rheumatologists, (2) criteria definition and reduction by Delphi and nominal group technique exercises, (3) criteria weighting using multicriteria decision analysis, and (4) refinement of weights and threshold score in a development cohort of 441 patients and validation in another cohort of 514 patients.

BACKGROUND: Phase 1 or phase 1/2 trials are a first step in pediatric cancer drug development. Currently, there is a paucity of information regarding contemporary outcomes for pediatric patients enrolled in these trials. We describe characteristics and outcomes of patients enrolled in pediatric phase 1 clinical trials over a 9-year period at a single institution.

METHODS: We queried our clinical trials management system to generate a list of patients enrolled and treated on pediatric phase 1 or phase 1/2 trials from 2011 to 2019. CHD has been historically associated with the development of cerebral abscess. This retrospective cohort study examines the association of CHD with the occurrence of cerebral abscess in an inpatient paediatric population. We analysed data from the Pediatric Health Information System database, an administrative database that captures data from participating children's hospitals in the United States. We included all patients admitted to participating paediatric ICUs between 2016 and 2021 for a total of 426,029 admissions. Including all admissions, 1,387 (0.3%) patients experienced a cerebral abscess, and of 80,927 (19%) patients with CHD, only 88 (0.1%) experienced a cerebral abscess (odds ratio …

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the association between telemedicine intensity and ambulatory physician electronic health record (EHR) use following the COVID-19 pandemic.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included ambulatory physicians in 11 specialties at 2 large academic medical centers (Washington University in St Louis [WashU], University of California San Francisco [UCSF]). EHR use measures, including time-based and frequency-based, were analyzed in the post-COVID-19 period (March 1, 2021, through March 7, 2022). Multivariable regression models with 2-way fixed effects were used to assess the association between telemedicine intensity and EHR use.

The West Coast Deep Sea Crustacean resource consists of crystal crab (snow) (Chaceon albus), champagne crab (spiny) (Hypothalassia acerba) and giant crab (Pseudocarcinus gigas). The resource is mainly accessed by the commercial West Coast Deep Sea Crustacean Managed Fishery (WCDSCMF), which primarily targets crystal crabs. The West Coast Rock Lobster Managed Fishery (WCRLMF) also retains a small amount of champagne crabs as byproduct of deep-water rock lobster fishing. The Gascoyne Demersal Scalefish Resource (GDSR) comprises over 80 species inhabiting inshore (20-250 m deep) and offshore ( > 250 m deep) waters in the Gascoyne Coast Bioregion (GCB; south of Onslow to north of Kalbarri). The GDSR is primarily targeted by commercial, charter and recreational boat-based line fishers. Snapper and Goldband Snapper are the indicator species selected for monitoring and assessing the status of the inshore suite of the GDSR, while Ruby Snapper and Greybanded Grouper are the indicators for the offshore suite.

Periodic assessments of GDSR indicator species demonstrated that historical fishing of Snapper led to stocks being below …

The North Coast Demersal Scalefish Resource (NCDSR) comprises ecological suites of tropical demersal fish species that occur predominantly in inshore waters (20–250 m deep) and offshore waters ( > 250 m deep) of the North Coast Bioregion (NCB). More than 60 demersal species are landed by fisheries operating in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions of the NCB each year, including high-value snappers (Lutjanidae), groupers (Epinephelidae), and emperors (Lethrinidae). As the number of working parents rises, employers are increasingly called upon to support employees’ work–family (WF) obligations. Grounded in conservation of resources theory, we examined how providing varying degrees of parental support (paid vs. unpaid leave and family-supportive vs. -unsupportive leadership) is mutually beneficial to employee and organizational well-being – the ultimate criterion for organizational science. Participants (N = 538) were randomly assigned to read vignettes that varied the amount of parental support provided for expectant working parents. We tested whether WF benefits fairness perceptions moderated the indirect effects of parental support on felt obligation through job-related anxiety. Findings …

Hypernatremia is defined as a serum sodium greater than 145 mEq/L and is due to either a deficit of free water or excess sodium intake. Extreme hypernatremia (sodium level > 190 mEq/L) is immediately life–threatening with mortality rates > 60%. It is especially challenging to avoid complications, such as permanent neurological injury, respiratory failure, and profound electrolyte derangement, when children are in kidney failure. Established guidelines are lacking for correcting such extreme levels due to a paucity of information in the literature, although general recommendations are to decrease levels by no more than 10-12 mEq/L per day to prevent neurological complications. Recombinant Erythropoietin Use For Anemia Of Prematurity: A Three Year Since Center Experience, Hannah Darland, Krishna Dummula, Chaitali Mahajan, Vishal Pandey

Background: Anemia is a common disorder of prematurity secondary to limited blood volume, excessive blood draws, inadequate nutrition, poor iron reserves, and insufficient endogenous erythropoietin. While many NICUs use recombinant erythropoietin (rEpo) to treat anemia of prematurity, the absence of universal guidelines has led to variability in dosing and schedules. Here we present our experience on the use of rEpo in a level 3 NICU. Our unit protocol uses 400 IU/kg three times a week for a total of 9 doses if hematocrit < 30%. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the response to rEpo in infants with anemia of prematurity. Methods: Charts of infants born between 2018 and 2020 with gestation ≤34 weeks who received rEpo for anemia of prematurity were retrospectively reviewed. We defined response to therapy as an increase of hematocrit by 5% from pre-treatment baseline. Infants who did not achieve the therapeutic goal or who received blood transfusions were considered non-responders. Neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) requiring treatment were treated as adverse events. Results: A total of 44 infants were treated with rEpo during the study period. Clinical characteristics are described in Table I. Average hematocrit at birth was 44.8±7.5 (32.7 to 60.8). Infants were started on rEPO at a median corrected age of 33.3 ±3 weeks and a weight of 1674±622 g. Average DOL was 37±18 at initiation of therapy. Average baseline hematocrit at the start of therapy was 27.9±1.8%. 80% of patients (35/44) responded with increase of hematocrit by >5%, 20% (9/44) did not respond. 75% of infants (33/44) received all 9 doses. 11 patients received …

Introduction: Neonatal onset of cytopenia autoinflammation rash and hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis syndrome (NOCARH), a subset of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), is a rare and life-threatening condition characterized by uncontrolled immune response. It presents a diagnostic challenge in neonates due to the overlap of clinical features with other conditions, particularly congenital infections. We report a case of NOCARH in a late pre-term neonate, highlighting an atypical age group and the diagnostic difficulty of this syndrome. Purpose: Appalachian Kentucky (KY) residents experience the highest lung cancer rates in the US with declines lagging among women; we sought to uncover barriers and facilitators to lung cancer prevention for Appalachian KY women and to identify community-specific interventions. Approach: We utilized concept mapping, a participatory mixed method, to generate consensus on perceived barriers and facilitators. Setting/Participants: We recruited 71 adult women from Appalachian KY counties. Method: After collecting online concept mapping data, we used multidimensional scaling to generate a point map of perceived similarities and hierarchical cluster analysis to create a thematic cluster map. This thesis reports two exploratory studies of similar design, both of which investigated which gamers might be at risk for problematic or aggressive gaming. In both Study 1 (N = 480) and Study 2 (N = 761), which served as a replication, four composite scores representing participants’ personality attributes were created from big traits of the HEXACO—Honesty-Humility, Emotionality, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Openness, a people-centered intelligence—personal intelligence—and motives for gaming. These composite scores and the subordinate individual variables were used to predict lifespace measures of unhealthy/healthy gaming behaviors and aggressive/pro-social in-game interactions. It is for these reasons that peptides are used for metal sensing and sequestration in the body and environment. As applications expand, the need for accurate modeling of microstructure–property relationships to guide informed material design and manufacturing decisions is increasing. This dissertation presents a multiscale numerical modeling framework informed by X-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) data to corelate the effective mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of biomedically relevant composite systems with their microstructure.
