Indigenous Women’S Reproductive Traditions: Reclaiming Sovereignty Through 500 Years Of Colonization, Stephanie A. Sellers

In Indigenous Women’s Reproductive Traditions, Stephanie Sellers delves into the rich history of Indigenous women’s reproductive practices before European colonization. The book highlights traditional methods such as birth control, abortion, and child spacing, which were integral to maintaining agency over their bodies. Sellers explores how these practices were disrupted by European patriarchal structures and examines the impact of forced sterilization in the 20th century. Today, Indigenous women are reclaiming their rights through movements for reproductive justice, advocating for a return to their ancestral practices and redefining concepts of womanhood and motherhood on their own tribal terms.

This study explored the interaction effects of physical activity levels and race on college students' physical and mental health, focusing on Native American students. A total of 245 students participated, categorized by physical activity levels (low, moderate, and high) and race (Native American and others). Descriptive statistics outlined the sample characteristics and physical activity behaviors. At the same time, a two-way ANOVA was conducted to assess the effects of race and physical activity on health-related quality of life, measured through physical and mental composite scores (PCS and MCS). This dissertation presents a comprehensive first-principles investigation into the interaction of light with ferroelectric materials, focusing on light-induced structural responses (photostriction) and phase transitions in Ferroelectric superlattices, epitaxially strained BiFeO3 thin films, and twodimensional NbOX2 (X = Cl, Br, I) ferroelectrics. The work aims to provide microscopic insights into how light can control the lattice structure and even the crystallographic phase in these systems, with the broader goal of informing the design of light-responsive functional materials for practical technological applications. The first part explores light-induced effects in PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices with different polarization orientations. Our simulations reveal that photoexcitation modifies the …

The Ozark Cavefish is one of multiple species of conservation concern found in Cave Springs Cave and Logan Cave in Northwest Arkansas (NWA). Over the past two decades, the urbanization of NWA has negatively impacted the recharge areas of both caves, and in turn the water quality of both cave streams. The changing climate has also altered temperature and precipitation, which influence many aspects of karst groundwater. These effects are shown in the historical water quality records for both caves. However, these records are from varied sources and have never been comprehensively compiled and analyzed. This thesis approaches the issue …

The discovery of topological materials (TMs) has opened up exciting opportunities for probing fundamental physics and enhancing innovative device integrations. These materials display various exotic properties, such as large magnetoresistance, high mobility, chiral anomaly, and surface Fermi arcs. The magnetic versions of ZrSiS family, LnSbTe and LnPS (Ln = lanthanide) have attracted intensive attention as these materials provide a new platform to study interplay between magnetism, topological states, and electron correlations. Despite the benefits that urban parks provide, use and access is not equitably distributed among the population, often favoring historically privileged populations over others (disadvantaged). Cancer cachexia is a wasting syndrome characterized by the loss of skeletal muscle affecting cancer patients’ independence and quality of life. Cancer cachexia affects up to 80% of cancer patients and is responsible for 30-40% of cancer-related deaths. Previous studies have demonstrated sex-specific differences in the onset and progression of cancer cachexia; however, these differences remain underexplored. To date, pharmacological and nutritional interventions are largely ineffective in preventing or reversing cachexia. Chemotherapy, a first-line cancer treatment, is known to trigger cachexia by itself complicating prognosis and therapy response. In addition, epigenetic alterations, such as DNA methylation (DNAm), are known to …

Burnout is a significant issue among healthcare professionals. Burnout refers to the mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion that can develop throughout one’s career or studies. It can affect professionalism and patient care (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine: National Academy of Medicine, 2019). Studies have shown that burnout begins early in an individual's medical education and can increase throughout their training (Voltmer et al., 2021). This dissertation explores the works of three female authors of female protagonists in the long 18th century: Frances Burney’s Camilla and Evelina; Anne Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Italian; and Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, and Pride and Prejudice. By following the paths to security the female protagonists of these novels fashion, and identifying the elements of Stoicism and related Hellenism and the aspects of cybernetics, this dissertation delves into the choices female protagonists make along the way regarding their security and how such choices lead to agency and self-fashioning for these women. This thesis explores the role of mechanical properties and elastic couplings in freestanding paradigmatic ferroic monolayers within the framework of density functional theory. This dissertation is comprised of three interconnected published studies: (i) establishing the elastic behavior across a temperature-driven phase transition in SnSe monolayers; (ii) thermally-driven phase transitions in graphene-like silicene, germanene, and stanene, examining the structural stability and band gap occlusion; and (iii) magnetoelastic coupling in an Ising-like CrSiTe3 monolayer, focused on assessing magnetic contributions to the material stiffness by establishing a proper non-magnetic reference.

The degradation and loss of many salt marshes have adversely affected the vertebrates that reside within them. Fire has historically been a natural component of Florida’s salt marsh ecosystems, but its implementation and its value as a management tool remain poorly understood. We conducted point counts, monitored nests, and surveyed mammal occupancy in the Apalachicola River Wildlife and Environmental Area and the St. Mark’s National Wildlife Refuge in Florida’s panhandle to better understand the effects of fire on nesting birds and mammals that reside in salt marshes. The global shortage of neurointerventionalists presents a challenge to timely stroke care, particularly in low‐ and middle‐income countries. The Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology Stroke Interventional Laboratory Consensus criteria aim to standardize training and certification in neurointervention to address these disparities. This white paper reviews existing training standards in various regions, identifies gaps, and proposes a structured framework encompassing entry requirements, program structure, and certification processes. The Stroke Interventional Laboratory Consensus criteria further outline requirements for training centers and program directors. By establishing global standards, the Stroke Interventional Laboratory Consensus criteria seek to improve patient outcomes and expand access …
