Dual-Band High Gain Circular Microstrip Array Antenna For Wireless Applications, Hassan Ali Ragheb, Mariam Hossam Jul 2025

Dual-Band High Gain Circular Microstrip Array Antenna For Wireless Applications, Hassan Ali Ragheb, Mariam Hossam

Electrical Engineering

This paper presents the design of a compact, high-gain, dual-band microstrip antenna array composed of four circular patch elements. Traditional antenna arrays employ linear or planar configurations, where the feed network plays a key role in shaping the beamwidth and sidelobe level. In contrast, this design achieves compactness by nesting a small-scaled two-element linear array within a larger two-element linear array. Each radiating element is a circular microstrip patch designed for operation at 3.1 GHz and 6.9 GHz, aligning with IEEE 802.11b/g wireless communication standards. The full array configuration operates over dual bands, covering (3.05–3.18) GHz and (6.9–7.0) GHz, and …

Identification Of Crustose Coralline Algae Species In Florida And Their Ability To Induce Larval Settlement Of Caribbean Corals, Danielle Macias Jul 2025

Identification Of Crustose Coralline Algae Species In Florida And Their Ability To Induce Larval Settlement Of Caribbean Corals, Danielle Macias

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are a diverse, globally spread and yet poorly studied group of benthic organisms. They act as settlement cues for coral larvae, but this interaction is often species-specific, as CCA species can be either inducers or inhibitors to larval settlement and metamorphosis. Despite this importance, information on Caribbean CCA distribution, diversity, and impact on coral species is limited due to the difficulty in identifying them. In the present study, CCA samples were collected from seven different reef sites in the southeastern region of Florida’s Coral Reef and genetically identified using molecular analyses. Some of the samples collected …

Translating Soil Salinity To Agricultural Salt Stress: Key Salt-Tolerance Mechanisms For Agrohydrologic Models, Josh Gottlieb, Dvir Ochman, Cheng-Wei Huang, Jean-Christophe Domec, Nimrod Schwartz, Samantha Hartzell

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Summary:

Salt stress has a detrimental impact on crop yield and survival rates, which salt-tolerant cultivars can resist through numerous adaptive mechanisms. Most models of salt stress impacts on productivity and water use employ empirical or simplified schemes to represent salt-adaptive traits. However, with an increased understanding of these physiological tolerance mechanisms and emergent measurement techniques for monitoring key salinity dynamics, the potential for developing mechanistic agrohydrological models of the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum has grown. This perspective highlights strategies for modeling salt tolerance mechanisms, including root system architecture adaptation, salt filtration, adaptation of plant hydraulics, ion compartmentalization, and stomatal responses, to …

Absence Of Superconductivity In The Lightly Doped Hubbard Model, Jodie Roberts, Rudolf Torsten Clay Jul 2025

Absence Of Superconductivity In The Lightly Doped Hubbard Model, Jodie Roberts, Rudolf Torsten Clay

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science

The mechanism of superconductivity (SC) in high critical temperature cuprate superconductors remains an unsolved problem. The simplest electronic model of cuprate superconductors is the one band Hubbard model. It models copper atom positions with lattice sites, omitting oxygen atoms for simplicity, and separates the Hamiltonian into hopping (t,t) and interaction (U) components. The simplest Hubbard model only considers nearest neighbor hopping, t. To account for overlap between oxygen orbitals also requires next nearest neighbor hopping, t'. Exact solutions of the model are computationally prohibitive to find for large systems. Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods such as Constrained Path Monte Carlo …

Neural Network Prediction Of Titanium-Aluminum Mechanical Properties, Carter Reed, Kip Barrett Jul 2025

Neural Network Prediction Of Titanium-Aluminum Mechanical Properties, Carter Reed, Kip Barrett

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science

Technological progress is strongly coupled with our understanding of materials. In fields like aerospace, titanium-aluminum (Ti-Al) alloys are of particular interest for their strength-to-weight ratio and high-temperature performance. The ability to accurately predict these characteristics as a function of composition and processing conditions would reduce research costs by tuning the performance to the application's needs before producing the physical material. The mechanical properties, and performance by proxy, of a material are dependent on the microstructure of and the interatomic interactions within the material. Thus, we validate the rapid artificial neural network (RANN) potential of the titanium-aluminum binary system for the …

Efficient Image Denoising Models With Anderson Acceleration Using Finite Difference Methods, Amanda E. Diegel, Spence Hanegan, Hyeona Lim, Hoang Tran

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science

Current image denoising algorithms based on variational methods can suffer from slow convergence or no convergence due to  high nonlinearity of the images. To speed up the convergence of denoising, we apply Anderson acceleration to the fixed-point image denoising problem. Anderson acceleration is an algorithmic method for reducing the number of fixed-point iterations necessary for convergence. It involves using weighted updates to each iteration based on the weighted residuals from past iterations, or history. By using finite difference methods, we can approximate the gradient and higher-order partial derivatives at points on the image. We then use these approximations to create …

Algebraic Multigrid Methods For Nonsymmetric And Indefinite Problems: Theory And Applications, Ahsan Ali Jul 2025

Algebraic Multigrid Methods For Nonsymmetric And Indefinite Problems: Theory And Applications, Ahsan Ali

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Algebraic multigrid (AMG) is a well-established and highly efficient solver for symmetric positive definite (SPD) systems arising from elliptic and parabolic PDEs, while nonsymmetric systems from hyperbolic PDEs remain a significant challenge. This dissertation develops AMG methods and theory for nonsymmetric problems. First, we develop a novel approach combining mode constraints from energy-minimization AMG with local approximations of ideal restriction in $\ell$AIR, resulting in constrained $\ell$AIR (C$\ell$AIR), which demonstrates scalable convergence across advective and diffusive problems. Second, we extend optimal AMG theory by deriving spectral radius estimates for the two-grid error transfer operator using matrix-induced orthogonality, enabling convergence predictions for …

Faculty Publications

Rising sea levels that increase flooding in salt marshes recovering from hydrologic impairments is reducing nesting habitat for salt marsh sparrows. Abandonment of colonial farming practices (1600s through 1900s) has resulted in large, waterlogged basins characterized by shallow depressions (pannes) dominated by short-form Spartina alterniflora and unvegetated megapools that are subsiding. A relatively new technique designed to provide regular tidal flooding and drainage to the waterlogged basins that have formed on the marsh is runnelling – creation of shallow hydrologic features on the marsh surface. Will runnels result in revegetation of pannes and pools with productive perennial grasses that are …

Future Interior Of The Past: An Air Terminal Comes Of Age At Detroit-Willow Run, Joss Kiely Jul 2025

Future Interior Of The Past: An Air Terminal Comes Of Age At Detroit-Willow Run, Joss Kiely

Interiority

After the Second World War, manufacturing plants were no longer needed for wartime production levels, prompting the closure and repurposing of industrial facilities that became obsolescent overnight across the United States and in the manufacturing region of Southeastern Michigan. Located twenty miles west of Detroit, the Willow Run airfield in Ypsilanti was one such case. Best known for the massive B-24 Liberator manufacturing plant designed by Albert Kahn that opened in 1942 as Air Force Plant 31, the airfield played a key role in ending the war. Just to the south, a Kahn-designed hangar was loosely repurposed in 1946–1947 as …
