OBJECTIVE: To assess the differences in the symptoms associated with common otolaryngology complaints between male and female patients.

METHODS: Between June 2020 and July 2023, a multi-institutional cross-sectional study was performed at six tertiary academic otolaryngology practices using semantics-based questionnaires to assess the symptoms patients associate with the complaints of sinus infection, reflux, congestion, and dizziness. Patients selected symptoms from lists of proposed terms to describe the various conditions. The primary outcome measure was sex-related differences in respondent symptom selection.

AIMS: The aim of the study was to identify the barriers and facilitators to healthcare access for people with Parkinson's disease (PWP) in Spanish-speaking Latin American countries (LAC) in Central and South America, to understand their drivers and consider the implications for health systems in LAC.

METHODS: Four online semi-structured focus groups were conducted with 25 PWP who provide education and/or support to PWP. The study was designed and implemented by a person with lived experience of PD. Data were mapped to an existing model of access to healthcare that incorporates provider and consumer abilities.

OBJECTIVE: Dystonia is one of the most prevalent movement disorders, characterized by significant clinical and etiological heterogeneity. Despite considerable heritability (~25%), the etiology in most patients remains elusive. Moreover, understanding correlations between clinical manifestations and genetic variants has become increasingly complex.

METHODS: Exome sequencing was conducted on 1924 genetically unsolved, mainly late-onset isolated dystonia patients, recruited primarily from two dystonia registries (DysTract and the Dystonia Coalition). Rare variants in genes previously linked to dystonia (n = 406) were examined, confirmed via Sanger sequencing, and analyzed for segregation when possible.

Human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) are encoded by the most polymorphic genes in the human genome. HLA class I alleles control antigen presentation for T cell recognition, which is pivotal for autoimmunity, infectious diseases and cancer. Current knowledge of HLA-bound peptides is limited, skewed and falls short of population-wide HLA binding profiles for high-value targets. Here we present ESCAPE-seq (enhanced single-chain antigen presentation sequencing), a massively parallel platform for comprehensive screening of class I HLA-peptide combinations for antigen presentation via deep DNA sequencing. Programmers often face hard-to-answer questions when working on large-scale projects. Not only during team collaborations, but also during interruptions such as meetings, having to suddenly work on another project, or even just taking a break are major reasons these questions arise, as programmers have to regain the context, knowledge, and mental state to resume the work. Traditional text editors such as GitHub do provide a built-in history system, but they lack historical context behind the editing to answer such questions.

The reallocation of jobs to more productive firms is a substantial component of aggregate productivity growth, yet job reallocation rates have declined substantially in the United States. This paper explores the hypothesis that greater technological rivalry has exacerbated adjustment costs, slowing reallocation. Using microdata at the US Census and estimates of technological rivalry in firm growth regressions, we find that technological rivalry slows firm responses to productivity shocks. Firms do not expand as rapidly in the face of higher obsolescence risk. Estimating counterfactual firm growth from 1997-2018, we find that growing technological rivalry accounts for most of the decline in …

All methanogens that can fix nitrogen use molybdenum (Mo) nitrogenase. Some methanogens, including Methanosarcina acetivorans, also contain alternative vanadium- and iron-nitrogenases, encoded by the vnf and anf operons, respectively. These nitrogenases are produced when there is insufficient Mo to support Mo-nitrogenase activity. The factors that control the expression of the alternative nitrogenases in response to Mo availability are unknown in methanogens. Here we show that ModE is the regulator that represses transcription of the vnf and anf operons in M. acetivorans when cells are grown with Mo. CRISPRi repression of modE results in a significant increase in the transcription of …

With the anticipated launch of the NextGen bar exam next year, transactional lawyering skills are enjoying increased attention in first-year law school curricular development. At the same time, recent amendments to ABA Rule 303 have made it essential for new law students to learn about the profession’s core values and responsibilities. While these evolving priorities open the door to pedagogical innovation, incorporating two distinct topics into an already packed curriculum can be challenging. However, there are persistent barriers to data sharing as well as privacy concerns related to unauthorized access, misuse, and reidentification of deidentified data. Coordinated growth of multiple tissues is fundamental to shaping our body, but the underlying mechanisms remain underexplored. In zebrafish embryos, midline tissues composed of the notochord, floorplate, and hypochord elongate synchronously with their lengths aligned. We show that floorplate and hypochord cells collectively migrate posteriorly along the nascent notochord extracellular matrix as it extends posteriorly, maintaining the tripartite configuration. Fibroblast growth factor-mediated migration in a spatially graded manner causes cell stretching, which triggers Yap-dependent proliferation and controls floorplate and hypochord growth. OBJECTIVE: This study describes the structural and mechanical changes in the left atrium and left ventricle in a canine model of chronic mitral regurgitation in an attempt to identify markers linked to the onset of atrial tachyarrhythmias or left ventricle dysfunction.

METHODS: Animals underwent baseline and terminal echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Under echocardiographic guidance, chordae tendinae were avulsed until there was severe mitral regurgitation, defined by regurgitant jet area to left atrium area more than 70%. At terminal surgery, rapid atrial pacing was performed to test inducibility of atrial tachyarrhythmias.

Among ectotherms, temperature and food availability are drivers of individual and population characteristics. Increasing night-time temperatures due to climate change can increase energetic demands, potentially amplified or mitigated by prey consumption. Few studies examine night-time temperatures specifically, and consequences of co-occurring changes in the abiotic and biotic environment. While many predicted that technological progress would eventually make work obsolete, Americans continue to pull long hours. Although stories of worker burnout and “quiet quitting” suggest that this situation is not a good fit for everyone, any problems are largely invisible to the conceptual frameworks that dominate the analysis of law. Background:

Balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO) is an image-guided procedure used to treat high-risk gastric varices by occluding portosystemic shunts and injecting sclerosant to induce thrombosis. Gastric varices occur in approximately 20% of patients with portal hypertension, with bleeding carrying mortality rates up to 45%. In most cases, retrograde venous access through the renal vein and shunt is sufficient for variceal obliteration. However, unusual venous anatomy or flow dynamics can complicate this process, requiring advanced techniques.

Objective

Prenatal glucocorticoids (e.g., cortisol) are a widely proposed prenatal programming mechanism, yet few studies directly measure fetal cortisol. Neonatal hair provides a non-invasive method to assess fetal cortisol. The current studies test the association between maternal exposure to discrimination and fetal cortisol, as measured in neonatal hair, in two cohorts.

Methods

Study 1: Pregnant individuals (N = 65) and their neonates (61.8 % female) participated in study 1 between 2017 and 2021. This Article offers a novel account of the origins of “the rule of law” in the English-speaking world. The phrase itself likely entered the language as a literal translation of the Latin regula juris. Prior to the early seventeenth century, however, the phrase appears to have been used exclusively to refer to the specific legal rule or maxim most relevant to the resolution of a particular kind of dispute.
