The Foundation Review

Funder listening is an essential complement to community participation to disrupt white dominant culture habits that entrench the status quo of hierarchy and power. Community-centered listening, combined with participatory processes, offers funders an opportunity to shift in deep and sustainable ways from an individualistic, “power over” orientation to interdependent relationships with community partners.

In this article, two practitioners of equity and participatory philanthropy share how funder listening and community participation form a potent combination to help funders confront their own power and use it intentionally to honor and bolster community ownership and agency.

A growing number of grantmaking institutions (GMIs) recognize that listening to communities in which they invest—especially those to, and most affected by, the challenges being addressed—is crucial to achieve their equity goals. Despite investments and intent to listen, there is a gap in implementation.

Genuine listening for equity requires that foundation leaders view the shift as adaptive and not merely technical. A technical change entails adoption of specified methods whereas adaptive changes require a fundamental shift in values and beliefs. Reflecting a growing consensus that meaningful change doesn’t come without the involvement of those most impacted, funders have signed on to efforts to “listen,” “get proximate,” and “empower.”

In this article, the authors draw on their lived expertise and research to describe how even well-intentioned community engagement efforts can become extractive, tokenizing, and undermine existing community assets. As a meaningful alternative, the authors suggest “centering community” as an orientation to all philanthropic work and the Community Bill of Rights (CBR) as a tool to guide the required change (Black et al., 2022).

The Supreme Court’s recent embrace of originalism as a mode of constitutional analysis relies almost exclusively on a view of history and tradition that would bind us to an understanding of principles and ideals that legitimized the exclusion of minority voices. This paper explores the process of optimal quantization for several types of discrete probability distributions. Quantization is a technique used to approximate a complex distribution with a smaller set of representative points, which is important in fields such as data compression and signal processing. We begin by examining two specific nonuniform distributions over a finite set of values and identify the best representative points for different levels of approximation. We then extend our analysis to two infinite discrete distributions: one supported on the reciprocals of natural numbers and another on the natural numbers themselves. The authors show that a large class of 2-adic Schrödinger equations is the scaling limit of certain continuous-time quantum Markov chains (CTQMCs). Practically, a discretization of such an equation gives a CTQMC. As a practical result, new types of continuous-time quantum walks (CTQWs) on graphs using two symmetric matrices are constructed. The transport between nodes in one direction is described by one matrix, while the transport between nodes in the opposite direction. This thesis explores the intercultural perceptions of suicidality and the role that these perceptions have on meaning of life in Japanese culture through an exploratory, autoethnographic analysis of my journey walking through Japan’s Aokigahara “suicide” Forest. In June 2024, I traveled to Fujikawaguchiko, Japan to conduct an autoethnographic analysis of my experiences walking through Aokigahara Forest using shinrin-yoku and mindful walking (Jung, 2014) as supplemental research methodologies to make empirical observations and take notes on my journey walking through suicide forest as an embodied sensory experience. Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the second most common nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and is predominantly found in the head and neck region. With an annual increase in NMSC diagnoses, cSCC presents significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This review discusses the many risk factors for the development of cSCC, outlines the criteria for defining high-risk cSCC, and examines treatment approaches of these tumors based on risk stratification. While most cSCCs are treatable with surgical excision, approximately 5% metastasize, with head and neck cSCC showing poor prognosis once metastasis occurs. In early 2025, Curated Storefront contracted the Center for Economic Development at Cleveland State University to examine the impact of the organization’s programs that support and underwrite the installation of artistic works in unoccupied or vacant storefront spaces concentrated along the main commercial corridor of downtown Akron. This report serves to contextualize the organization's work within relevant and practitioner literatures on place-based economic development, storefront revitalization, and creative placemaking, examine the community’s understanding of the organization and its work, and provide guidance and strategic recommendations for moving forward.

Gendered language is the use of words that indicate an individual’s gender. Though useful in certain context, it can reinforce gender stereotypes and introduce bias, particularly in machine learning models used for tasks like occupation classification. When textual content such as biographies contains gender cues, it can influence model predictions, leading to unfair outcomes such as reduced hiring opportunities for women. To address this issue, we propose GenWriter, an approach that integrates Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) with Large Language Models (LLMs) to rewrite biographies in a way that obfuscates gender while preserving semantic content. Tsetse (Glossina spp.), stable (Stomoxys spp.), and house flies (Musca domestica L.) impact humans and animals through bites and/or disease transmission. Tsetse are controlled using insecticide-coated fabric targets that are traditionally blue and/or black, but a violet polyester has now been engineered for greater attractiveness. Here, we investigate whether violet targets are also effective against stable and house flies. We sampled flies by electrocution at 1.0 (H) × 0.5 m (W) targets in Kenya, comparing catches at violet targets, and blue and black targets made from polyesters used in commercial traps and targets. Background: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with biventricular pacing (BVP) is an established treatment of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and wide QRS. Left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP) has emerged as a physiologic alternative by directly engaging the His-Purkinje system, potentially improving electrical resynchronization and clinical outcomes.

Background: Gastrointestinal (GI) infections, which often result in or stem from intestinal dysbiosis, can affect the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and increase the risk of adverse effects, such as colitis. In this study, we explored the impact of GI infections before initiation of ICI therapy on the incidence and severity of immune-mediated colitis (IMC) and survival.

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face multiple barriers to inclusion throughout life. One barrier is the medical knowledge and biases of adult healthcare providers with diagnoses traditionally associated with childhood. Medical school curricula have limited content related to IDD, and students have limited opportunities to engage with community organizations during their clinical years. Methods: We created a one-month clinical elective to address medical students' attitudes and knowledge regarding individuals with IDD using experiential learning. Heavy metal contamination in water resources presents a significant environmental and public health challenge, with lead a particular concern due to its toxicity and persistence. This study reports the green synthesis of Fe-Ti mixed oxide nanoparticles (NPs) using dextrose as a green source and investigates their effectiveness in lead removal from aqueous solutions. The synthesized NPs were characterized using XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM-EDS, and BET analysis, revealing an amorphous structure with a high surface area (292.89 m² g¹) and mesoporous characteristics. XPS analysis confirmed the presence of mixed Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ valence states in a Ti⁴⁺-rich framework, creating diverse binding sites for …

Accurate beam-level traffic forecasting is critical for 5G wireless network optimization, yet is challenged by inherent data sparsity and multi-scale temporal patterns. This thesis presents a novel Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU)-based Multi-Task Learning (MTL) framework with ensemble enhancement for spatio-temporal traffic prediction. The approach used shared representations to jointly perform classification and regression, making it more effective than traditional methods at handling beam-level traffic prediction. Through systematic evaluation of six machine learning models (Linear Regression, DLinear, XGBoost, Echo State Network, Long Short-Term Memory, and GRU-MTL) across three sequence lengths (168/24/8-hour), we demonstrated that: (1) the proposed MTL approach outperformed conventional …

The accelerated industrialization has boosted the demand for fossil fuels, increasing prices and greenhouse gas emissions, which has led to a quest for cleaner energy sources such as biofuels. Cellulose, a common biopolymer, is promising for renewable energy but is not hydrolysis-resistant. In this research, firstly, nine amino-sulfonic acids, orthanilic, aminomethanesulfonic, pyridine-3-sulfonic, 2-aminoethanesulfonic, 3-amino-1-propanesulfonic, and 3-morpholinopropanesulfonic acids, sulfanilic, and metanilic were investigated as model catalysts for cellulose hydrolysis. D-cellobiose, a more simplified model of cellulose, was similarly hydrolyzed using metanilic and sulfanilic acids and benchmarked against sulfuric acid. Functional nanomaterials are revolutionizing electronic devices such as displays and photovoltaics, yet existing semiconductor manufacturing methods struggle to adapt to the unique properties of nanoparticles. In particular, quantum dots (QDs) display density-dependent properties such as tunable energy transfer, yet current preferred methods of producing QD patterns lack control over the density of QDs deposited in specific locations on a surface. Here, we present a photochemical method to generate QD patterns directly from solution onto a functionalized surface, which enables density control.
