Detecting And Correcting Systematic Image Distortion In Digital Atomic-Resolution Images From Crystals: Projected Symmetry Of Graphite Calibration Samples For Scanning Prove Microscopy And Subperiodic Crystals For Aberration-Corrected Transmission Electron Microscopy, Tyler Michael Bortel
Dissertations and Theses
Though it is an impressive technology, Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) produces images commonly plagued by small systematic errors, often called "drift". These effects have a variety of causes, most notably nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric actuator tubes responsible for the positioning of the scanning probe or sample. One result of these distortions is a potential incorrect classification of the symmetry groups and projected Laue classes of recorded images from crystals—made possible by using recently developed objective methods. An implementation of a known method for detecting and correcting these errors is presented. This method operates strictly in Fourier space so as to …

Gust-Induced Aerodynamic Performance In Insects' Forward Flapping Flight, Arash Farsani, Ori Stearns, Gal Ribak, Roi Gurka
Physics and Engineering Science
Flapping-wing flight is inherently unsteady, where atmospheric gusts can substantially degrade the aerodynamic performance when their characteristic time scales are comparable to the wingbeat period. This study presents a numerical investigation and time–frequency characterization of gust-induced aerodynamic response of flapping wings of varying size, inspired by the flight of a longhorn beetle, Batocera rufomaculata. Geometrically similar wings spanning the biological range were simulated in forward flight under identical prescribed kinematics and a transient frontal gust with a smoothly ramped profile. Three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes simulations using the shear stress transport k–ω turbulence model were performed to resolve the instantaneous pressure …

Comparative Lca Of Germanium Production From Coal Fly Ash Using Chlorinated Distillation And Solvent Extraction, Dennis Dadzie, Kwame Awuah-Offei, Michael Moats, Nasib Al Habib, Weston Hartzell
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Germanium is increasingly important for high-tech applications, yet its supply chain is vulnerable, with production limited to a few countries. Although prior research has explored alternative techniques for extracting and recovering germanium, the literature lacks comparative life-cycle evidence that quantifies their environmental burdens and translates findings into actionable (policy) recommendations. This paper presents a cradle-to-gate life-cycle assessment that compares the environmental burdens of producing 1 kg of single-crystal germanium from coal fly ash via chlorinated distillation (CD) and solvent extraction (SX). Under the study's assumptions, CD has lower potential impacts in 15 of 19 impact categories, while both routes show …

Towards Resilient Platform Work In The Philippines, Cheryll Ruth Soriano, Jayvy Gamboa, Jan Michael Alexandre Bernadas, China Patricia Villanueva, Marge Medina, Katherine Brimon
SDRC Projects
Platform work is increasingly promoted as a strategy for employment generation in the Philippines. The Philippine Labor Force Survey of 2021 reported that around 1.7 million gig workers are engaged by online platforms or mobile applications, with many depending on it as their primary livelihood. Yet the rapid expansion of platform labor as a livelihood opportunity is unfolding alongside intensifying climate disruption and technological transformation. Extreme heat, flooding, supertyphoons, unstable power infrastructure, and digital dependency are creating new forms of vulnerability for platform workers—many of whom already operate under precarious and weakly protected labor conditions. Due to its archipelagic topography …

Dosimetric Impact Of Replacing An Anterior Field With A 3d Conformal Anterior Partial Arc In Thoracic Spine Palliative Radiotherapy, Camri Garretson
Masters Projects
Purpose: Palliative radiotherapy is commonly used for the treatment of thoracic spine metastases; however, conventional beam arrangements can expose nearby organs at risk (OAR), including the heart, to unnecessary radiation dose. This study evaluated whether replacing a static anterior beam with a conformal anterior arc could reduce cardiac dose while maintaining adequate target coverage.
Methods: Fifteen thoracic spine treatment plans were retrospectively replanned using an experimental technique in which the static anterior beam from the original plans was replaced with a 3D anterior conformal arc. All other planning parameters, including beam geometry, wedges, and multi-leaf collimator margins (MLC), were kept …

The Employment Situation Of Veterans: June 2026, Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
The June 2026 Employment Situation of Veterans report from Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF), based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data, highlights a softening labor market for veterans in June 2026. Veteran unemployment rose from 3.2% in May to 4.1% in June, matching the national unemployment rate but representing a notable monthly increase. Post-9/11 veterans experienced a rise from 4.1% to 4.8%. Younger veterans faced the greatest challenges, with unemployment among those ages 18–24 increasing sharply to 17.4%. Unemployment also increased among veterans ages 25–34 and 55–64. By gender, rates rose for both men and women, …

Bioactive surface modification of degradable zinc (Zn) vascular implants is essential for controlling biodegradation and supporting vascular healing. Here, we describe the fabrication of polydopamine coating (PDA-Cu) containing up to ∼0.8 wt % Cu ions on Zn substrates using an immersion-assisted mussel-inspired polymerization strategy. The coating is composed of densely packed PDA-Cu nanospheres with diameters of ∼130-170 nm, exhibiting an even distribution of Cu ions within the PDA matrix via Cu-catechol coordination. Thirty-day leaching tests confirmed a steady release of 0.01-0.04 ppm of Cu ions per 5 days from Zn/PDA-Cu samples in Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS). In vitro nitric …

All Decisions
In this nonpayment proceeding, the court granted tenant's motion for leave to reargue a prior decision denying summary judgment on tenant's rent overcharge counterclaim. Upon reargument, the court found it had overlooked binding precedent from Matter of North Carolina Leasing Corp. v New York State Div. of Hous. & Community Renewal, 156 AD2d 452 (2d Dept 1989), establishing that an overcharge may result from an owner charging less than the maximum permitted rent. Summary judgment was granted to tenant on the overcharge claim and the petition was dismissed.

All Decisions
In this nonpayment proceeding in a rent-stabilized unit, tenants moved for leave to amend their answer to add a rent overcharge counterclaim and defense, and for discovery of the rent history. The court granted the motion, holding that irregularities in the rent history are sufficient to warrant discovery and that proof of fraud is not required to obtain discovery of rent records in a rent overcharge defense.
Risk, Trust, And Medical Decision-Making: Perinatal Care Among Patients And Providers In South Florida, Isabella Viera
Risk, Trust, And Medical Decision-Making: Perinatal Care Among Patients And Providers In South Florida, Isabella Viera
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines how structural inequality shapes the experience of perinatal care among pregnant individuals and healthcare providers in South Florida, with particular attention to how risk is perceived and communicated, how trust between patients and providers is built or eroded, and how medical decision-making unfolds under conditions of structural vulnerability. Drawing on multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork conducted between October 2025 and April 2026, supplemented by a quantitative analysis of low-birth-weight rates across all 67 Florida counties, the project analyzes how risk is defined, communicated, and lived across community-based prenatal organizations, online educational platforms, and in-depth provider and patient interviews. The …

Avian Conservation And Translocations In The Mariana Archipelago, John V. Bender
Avian Conservation And Translocations In The Mariana Archipelago, John V. Bender
Dissertations
Island birds are among the world’s most imperiled vertebrates, and conservation translocations are increasingly used to combat threats, but their success depends on understanding the mechanics of whether and how to conduct translocations effectively. In the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, native forest birds persist across a chain of islands where habitat degradation and loss, invasive species, and extreme weather create persistent conservation challenges. For my dissertation, I investigated how avian conservation programs and translocations can be planned, implemented, and improved under biological, logistical, and social uncertainty. For Chapter 1 I analyzed 15 years of avian translocations across seven …
