Air pollution, particularly exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), poses a growing threat to cardiopulmonary health. PM2.5 consists of microscopic particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter and originates from industrial combustion, transportation, and urban dust. These particles are classified as xenobiotics and are capable of bypassing respiratory defenses to enter systemic circulation, where they cause oxidative stress, inflammation, and cardiovascular dysfunction. This study examines the effects of PM2.5 on cardiovascular function using a murine model. One evidence-based solution to enhance role clarity involves mentorship, which is defined as a professional relationship whereby a more experienced faculty member aids in the growth of a novice. Modern radar and signal processing systems require efficient computational architectures to handle increasing data rates while still being able to maintain dynamic configurability and complex tasks. This thesis presents and explores hardware and algorithmic approaches addressing these demands across several different applications. First, a low-cost tracking platform and architecture for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is developed, which provides detection and tracking capabilities, compliant with new FAA remote ID regulations. Second, a GPU-FPGA based digital true time delay beamformer is implemented to achieve real-time wideband radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation. Cognitive reserve (CR) refers to the individual differences in how people execute tasks, allowing some to cope with cognitive challenges more effectively than others. Additionally, previous studies have established a link between age-related hearing loss and cognitive decline. However, CR and cognitive aging have not been explored extensively in those who might identify as Deaf/hard of hearing (HH). There are four features potentially unique to this community that could shape one’s CR: use of hearing technology (e.g., hearing aid), bimodal bilingualism, and social connectedness and social support. Conventional rental websites bombard users with two-dimensional data and have no sense of place, which is why they're both time-consuming and mentally taxing. One-third of the world’s freshwater crayfish species face extinction risk, necessitating extreme and urgent conservation measures such as captive rearing. Little information exists on these measures for most threatened species. The hairy marron, Cherax tenuimanus (Parastacidae), is a critically endangered freshwater crayfish endemic to the Margaret River in south-western Western Australia. C. tenuimanus is being rapidly replaced by the smooth marron, Cherax cainii, a translocated congener, causing its progressive decline in range, and now it faces imminent extinction in the wild. Background Water and food insecurity can harm mental health; all 3 may, in turn, be exacerbated by humanitarian crises. The linkages between food insecurity, water insecurity, and mental health are gaining attention but have not been investigated after a natural disaster.

The purpose of this study was to compare mental health diagnoses in a sample of youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and youth without ASD (non-ASD) admitted to inpatient hospitals across the United States. We hypothesized that autistic youth would have a greater proportion of co-occurring psychiatric diagnoses compared to their typically developing peers. To do this, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) 2019 Kids’ Inpatient Database (KID). A disadvantaged neighborhood, as represented by area-level socioeconomic status (SES) has been associated with adverse outcomes among children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in the US, but the duration of impact after ALL diagnosis is not well understood. This retrospective cohort study utilized the National Cancer Database (NCDB) to examine the impact of area-level SES on overall survival among children with ALL. Median income and education quartiles based on residential zip code were used to create a composite area-level SES variable. Protecting Sleep to Reduce Delirium in Patients 65 Years and Older in the ICU

PURPOSE

This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to reduce the incidence of delirium by 30% through a nurse-initiated, non-pharmacological sleep improvement protocol in the ICU.

BACKGROUND

This project was implemented in a large healthcare organization in Houston, Texas, in a 16-bed Intensive Care Unit.

Early and accurate wildfire detection is critical for minimizing environmental damage and ensuring a timely response. However, existing satellite-based wildfire datasets suffer from limitations such as coarse ground truth, poor spectral coverage, and class imbalance, which hinder progress in developing robust segmentation models. In this paper, we introduce Land8Fire, a new large-scale wildfire segmentation dataset composed of over 20,000 multispectral image patches derived from Landsat 8 and manually annotated for high-quality fire masks. Building on the ActiveFire dataset, Land8Fire improves ground truth reliability and offers predefined splits for consistent benchmarking. Background: The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is an internationally recognized anti-hypertensive dietary model. This systematic scoping review examines the effectiveness of digital-based interventions utilizing the DASH dietary pattern. Methods: A search was conducted using 14 databases to include relevant studies from 1997 to January 2025 using PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews. Results: The review included 24 studies with almost 7000 participants, including randomized controlled trials and cohort studies conducted in several countries. Interventions using the DASH dietary pattern positively affected blood pressure (BP), nutrition behavior, and weight. Some studies also reported secondary outcomes such as reduced healthcare …

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are increasingly recognized as key regulators of gene expression and cellular signaling in cancer. Their functions are primarily mediated through interactions with specific protein partners that modulate chromatin structure, epigenetic remodeling, transcription, and signal transduction. In this review, we explore reports and strategies for the proteomic characterization of lncRNA-associated proteins, particularly emphasizing high-throughput liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based techniques. Affinity-based methods such as RNA pull-down, ChIRP MS, RAP-MS, BioID-MS, and SILAC-MS enable sensitive and specific mapping of lncRNA and protein complexes. In this study, we generated and integrated plasma proteomics and metabolomics with the genotype datasets of over 2300 European (EUR) and 400 African (AFR) ancestries to identify ancestry-specific multi-omics quantitative trait loci (QTLs). In total, we mapped 954 AFR pQTLs, 2848 EUR pQTLs, 65 AFR mQTLs, and 490 EUR mQTLs. We further applied these QTLs to ancestry-stratified type-2 diabetes (T2D) risk to pinpoint key proteins and metabolites underlying the disease-associated genetic loci. Background/Objectives: Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive, molecularly heterogeneous subtype of breast cancer, accounting for approximately 10–15% of all cases. While reproductive and metabolic factors contribute to breast cancer development, growing concerns about environmental exposures, alongside biological and socio-cultural influences, underscore the need for targeted prevention strategies across diverse populations. Background Skeletal muscle atrophy during cancer-induced cachexia remains a significant challenge in cancer management. Mitochondrial defects precede muscle mass and functional losses in models of cancer cachexia (CC). We hypothesized targeting Opa1-a key regulator of mitochondrial fusion-can attenuate LLC-induced CC outcomes.

Methods We utilized 1) in vivo transgenic Opa1 overexpression (OPA1 TG) in LLC-induced CC in vivo, and 2) BPG15 administration to induce Opa1 in vitro and in vivo.

Results OPA1 TG attenuated plantaris, gastrocnemius, and EDL loss with LLC in males and alleviated gastrocnemius loss infemales. OPA1 TG had greater mitochondrial respiration in plantaris and white gastrocnemius, and lowered …

Coolness, Leisure, And Power : The Development Of Mokanshan Summer Resort In Modern China, 1890–1937, Xuyan Pan

The concept of "coolness" (清涼) embodied fundamentally different bodily and cultural experiences in Chinese and Western traditions. With the introduction of Western-style summer resorts by foreign missionaries in the 1890s, these divergent understandings converged and clashed in new spatial forms. This study examines Mokanshan (莫干山), located in Zhejiang province and recognized as one of the Republican era’s “Four Great Summer Retreats” (民國四大避暑地), as a paradigmatic case of transnational leisure. Initially developed by missionaries as a health-oriented retreat, a transnationally managed enclave, and a nostalgic “overseas home” for expatriates, Mokanshan reflected a hybrid model of modern leisure shaped by foreign institutions. …

RNA post-transcriptional modifications act by stabilizing the functional conformations of RNA. While their role in messenger RNA (mRNA) decoding is well established, it is less clear how transfer RNA (tRNA) modifications outside the anticodon contribute to tRNA stability and accurate protein synthesis. Absence of such modifications causes translation errors, including mRNA frameshifting. By integrating single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer and cryogenic electron microscopy, we demonstrate that the N1-methylguanosine (m1G) modification at position 37 of Escherichia coli tRNAProL is necessary and sufficient for modulating the conformational energy of this tRNA on the ribosome so as to suppress +1 frameshifting otherwise induced …
