Effect Of Bond Strength Variation And Ionizing Radiation On Mutations In Cytosine-Guanine Islands, Joshua Robert Bedwell, Yan Poniatovskyi, Vola Andrianarijaona Aug 2025

Effect Of Bond Strength Variation And Ionizing Radiation On Mutations In Cytosine-Guanine Islands, Joshua Robert Bedwell, Yan Poniatovskyi, Vola Andrianarijaona

Achieve

Ionizing radiation produces free electrons within cells which then ionizes DNA and has the potential to cause carcinogenic mutations. Cytosine-Guanine (CpG) islands are regions that are rich in cytosine and guanine bases and are common sites of single point mutations and strand breaks. In this study, density function theory (DFT) is used to calculate the potential energy of DNA nucleotide dimers varying bond lengths in five different ionized states. Crossing between two ionized states can be seen in the potential energy curves, indicating the possibility of natural transition between the two states. Potential energy curves are used to determine bond …

Analyzing The Strength Of The Amine Bond Of Guanine Via Potential Curve Analysis: A Computational Approach, Yan Poniatovskyi, Joshua Robert Bedwell, Vola Andrianarijaona Aug 2025

Analyzing The Strength Of The Amine Bond Of Guanine Via Potential Curve Analysis: A Computational Approach, Yan Poniatovskyi, Joshua Robert Bedwell, Vola Andrianarijaona

Achieve

The deamination of guanine can be a cause of single point DNA mutations. In this study, the strength of the amine bond was examined using DFT and B3LYP to map out the bond’s potential curves under conditions of various charges being imposed on the molecule. Such an approach yielded a few potential curves that do not exhibit the expected behavior and rather, show crossings in potential energy curves. Discussions regarding the suspected causes of these unexpected behaviors are included in the poster presentation. The Mulliken charge analysis of guanine under these conditions is coherent with the proposition that the deamination …

Plant-Microbe Interactions Across Scales: Diversity, Disease, And Stress In Herbaceous Plant Communities, Philippa Tanford Aug 2025

Plant-Microbe Interactions Across Scales: Diversity, Disease, And Stress In Herbaceous Plant Communities, Philippa Tanford

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Plants interact consequentially with microbes spanning mutualism to pathogenicity, with broader effects on large-scale plant community structure. These plant communties, in turn, shape below and aboveground microbial communities through a variety of mechanisms. However, plant diversity-microbial diversity relationships remain broadly inconsistent across environments and among different plant and microbial assemblages. In my dissertation, I work to bridge some of these gaps in plant-microbial ecology in three experimental chapters assessing relationships between plant diversity and microbial diversity, including the influence of belowground-aboveground microbiome interactions, the influence of drought stress, and incorporating different spatial and experimental scales. First, I explore the microbial …

Social Buffering By Siblings In Childhood And Adolescence, Deborah Han, Natalie A. Thwaites, Julia Olson, Kenia Rivera, Julia Dmitrieva, Jenalee R. Doom

Psychology: Faculty Scholarship

Although positive sibling relationships are associated with better developmental outcomes for children and adolescents, it is unknown whether siblings may be effective social buffers of physiological stress. In addition, there is little research on whether depressive symptoms may moderate the effectiveness of social buffering. The current study examined (1) whether siblings, compared to strangers, buffered the cortisol response to a social evaluative stressor in children and adolescents, (2) whether depressive symptoms moderated this effect, and (3) whether self-reported sibling relationship quality influenced sibling buffering effectiveness. A total of 72 children (9-11 years) and 65 adolescents (15-17 years) were randomly assigned …

Tradition, Critque, And The Modern Moral Lingua Franca: A Lutheran Articulation Of Human Rights Language, Christian B. Dollar

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

The language of subjective, individual rights has become the primary way of speaking about the rights and wrongs of human life together. Since the end of World War II, one subset of this language—that of human rights—has achieved a global influence. The various Christian traditions of the west have, in large part, adopted this language of human rights to articulate and supplement their assorted social teachings. Yet, the adoption of human rights language has been contested by a dedicated cadre of Roman Catholic and Protestant theologians concerned about the potentially anti-Christian implications inherent in the grammar of rights. Christian rights …

Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone Modulates Nrem Sleep Consolidation Through The Thalamic Reticular Nucleus, Loredana Cumpana, Olivia Zanoletti, Dinesh Kankanamge, Bryan Copits, Carmen Sandi, Simone Astori

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) is a peptide associated with stress and anxiety that acts as a potent modulator throughout the nervous system. The thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) displays high expression of the CRH receptor 1 (CRHR1), but whether CRH modulates key TRN functions, such as sleep spindle rhythmogenesis, remained unexplored. Combining polysomnographic and photometric recordings in mice, we show that CRH release in TRN during non-rapid-eye movement sleep (NREMS) oscillates with a ~50-s periodicity, anti-correlating with sleep spindle dynamics. Optogenetic manipulations of CRH release in TRN modulated NREMS fragmentation through microarousals with corresponding changes in sigma and delta power. In ex-vivo …
