Corrosion Protection Of Copper In Salt Medium By Poly 4-Hyroxyaniline Deposited Via Electrodeposition Technique, Ahlam M. Farhan, Rasha A. Jassim, Nafeesa J. Kadhim

Baghdad Science Journal

The polymer was used to inhibit the corrosion of copper metal in salt media in different concentrations at room temperature using potentiometric polarization measurement. The polymer was prepared by mixing (0.1M) 4-Hydroxy aniline (C6H7NO) with (0.25M) of ammonium persulfate as the initiator using the electro-deposition technique. The polymer's results showed that copper in (3.5%) NaCl had good corrosion resistance. The findings demonstrate that the %IE for polymer-induced copper corrosion is 89.32% at 10 ppm concentration as a result of the 4-hydroxy aniline polymer's adsorption from salt solution on the surface of copper metal. The numbers from …

Multimodal Characterization Of Systems-Level Robustness In The Cellular Organelle Network, Aline Arra Aug 2025

Multimodal Characterization Of Systems-Level Robustness In The Cellular Organelle Network, Aline Arra

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Eukaryotic cells house mesoscopic and macroscopic complex systems that work in tandem for proper cellular function. A defining feature of eukaryotic cells is their mesoscopic network of membrane bound compartments called organelles. While each type of organelle has their own individual functions, there are vital cellular processes that come from the interactions between them, such as organelle biogenesis and metabolic regulation. A central question in cellular biophysics is to what degree is cellular function robust or fragile to breaks in the organelle network. These interactions can be explored by genetically deleting inter-organelle protein tethers called organelle contact sites. Here we …

Structure And Function Of Type 1 Pilus Assembly Machinery In Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Ryan Bitter Aug 2025

Structure And Function Of Type 1 Pilus Assembly Machinery In Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Ryan Bitter

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Gram-negative bacteria produce chaperone-usher pathway (CUP) pili, which are extracellular adhesive protein fibers critical for host-pathogen interactions. An outer-membrane usher protein, together with a periplasmic chaperone, assembles thousands of pilin subunits into a pilus fiber. Each pilus is tipped by an adhesin that mediates host and tissue tropisms by binding to receptors with stereochemical specificity. Type 1 pili expressed by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are essential virulence factors in urinary tract infections (UTIs) and facilitate attachment to mannosylated glycoproteins on bladder epithelial cells. Although type 1 pili have been extensively studied, critical gaps remain in our understanding of the molecular …

Kinase Suppressor Of Ras 2 Regulates Energy Balance And Tumor Initiation, Dianna H. Huisman Aug 2025

Kinase Suppressor Of Ras 2 Regulates Energy Balance And Tumor Initiation, Dianna H. Huisman

Theses & Dissertations

Kinase Suppressor of Ras 2 (KSR2) is a scaffold that facilitates Raf-MEK-ERK signaling and is expressed in the brain, pituitary, and adrenal gland. Here, we demonstrate that KSR2 functions in the adult brain to maintain organismal energy balance and in small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) to promote self-renewal and clonogenicity. Disruption of KSR2 in adult mice results in hyperphagia, obesity, reduced metabolic rate, and altered activity. Using spatial transcriptomics, we identify regions of the brain associated with regulation of feeding and energy expenditure with altered gene expression following KSR2 disruption. These findings reveal regions of interest in which targeted KSR2 disruption …

Claudin-1-Mediated Signaling And Therapy Resistance In Colorectal Cancer: From Mechanism To Translation, Mark W. Primeaux Aug 2025

Claudin-1-Mediated Signaling And Therapy Resistance In Colorectal Cancer: From Mechanism To Translation, Mark W. Primeaux

Theses & Dissertations

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality, with metastatic cases showing poor response to chemotherapy due to both intrinsic and acquired therapy resistance. Claudin-1 (CLDN1), a tight junction protein, is overexpressed and mislocalized outside of tight junctions in CRC, where it contributes to an aggressive, metastatic phenotype. Although this causal relationship has been well established, the mechanisms by which CLDN1 promotes tumor progression were unclear due to its lack of intrinsic enzymatic activity. This dissertation investigates the molecular mechanisms through which CLDN1 drives oncogenic signaling, its role in therapy resistance, and its translational potential as both a …

Restoring Translational Control With Novel Small Molecule Activators Of Pp2a In Cancer Cells, Kayla A. Jonas Aug 2025

Restoring Translational Control With Novel Small Molecule Activators Of Pp2a In Cancer Cells, Kayla A. Jonas

Theses & Dissertations

Hyperactivation of eIF4E-dependent translation in tumor cells is required for robust expression of oncogenic proteins and maintenance of the transformed phenotype. eIF4E binds to the 7-methylguanylate structure at the 5’ end of cellular mRNAs and nucleates the formation of the translation initiation complex, eIF4F, which recruits the preinitiation complex and resolves secondary structure in the mRNA. The ability of eIF4E to promote eIF4F assembly is negatively regulated by the translational repressor, 4E-BP1, and tumorigenesis depends on functional inactivation of 4E-BP1. A major mechanism of 4E-BP1 inactivation involves inhibitory phosphorylation by mTOR which prevents eIF4E binding. Functional inactivation can also occur …

Beyond The Bruise: Understanding Injury Risk Factors Among Livestock Workers In Cattle Feedyards And Animal Handling Farms And Ranches, Rishad Ahmed Aug 2025

Beyond The Bruise: Understanding Injury Risk Factors Among Livestock Workers In Cattle Feedyards And Animal Handling Farms And Ranches, Rishad Ahmed

Theses & Dissertations

Cattle feeding and livestock production are central to U.S. agriculture and represent some of the most hazardous occupational environments. Workers in feedyards and on cattle farms and ranches face elevated risks of injury due to physically demanding labor, frequent animal handling, and exposure to environmental and ergonomic hazards. Many feedyard workers are Hispanic/Latino immigrants who may experience additional barriers related to language, healthcare access, and job security. Similarly, injury risks among cattle producers are compounded by seasonal workload fluctuations, limited rest opportunities, and psychosocial stressors. Beyond individual impacts, agricultural injuries also pose a substantial economic burden. Recent estimates indicate that …

The Characterization Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas) In Nebraska Drinking Water And Human Health Impacts, Sarah Tucker

Theses & Dissertations

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic compounds that have been detected in water sources of urban and rural environments with evidence of adverse human health effects from exposure. Humans are primarily exposed through ingestion of contaminated water and food. PFAS exposure has been linked to negative multi-system health outcomes (liver, kidneys, cardiovascular, reproductive, and immune). PFAS occur as persistent mixtures in environmental media with decades long consequences to water quality. While national agencies have launched large-scale PFAS water quality monitoring studies, limited data exists for contamination of rural water in Nebraska, especially private wells. The aims of this study …

Beyond Single Metrics: A Holistic Benchmarking Framework For Low-Power Embedded Systems, Hassan Adam

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Modern embedded systems encounter a notable challenge in evaluation. While devices may meet traditional benchmarks, they often underperform in real-world applications due to neglected interactions at the system level. Current benchmarking suites, such as MLPerf Tiny and EEMBC ULPMark, evaluate specific metrics including computational throughput, energy efficiency, and memory usage. However, they do not consider the complex interdependencies that affect real-world performance. This thesis presents a benchmarking framework that concurrently evaluates multiple performance dimensions under realistic workloads, revealing system behaviors that are often hidden in conventional benchmarks.Through the comprehensive evaluation of three representative algorithms: Fast Fourier Transform, quantized neural network …

Effects Of Body Armor On Respiratory Muscle Fatigue And Muscle Blood Flow During Progressive Treadmill Marching, Kathryn Bell Aug 2025

Effects Of Body Armor On Respiratory Muscle Fatigue And Muscle Blood Flow During Progressive Treadmill Marching, Kathryn Bell

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Introduction: Torso-borne loads such as body armor are essential for modern military operations but impose mechanical and metabolic strain. These physiological stressors can trigger the inspiratory metaboreflex, which redirects blood flow from locomotor to respiratory muscles, further reducing muscle oxygen and endurance. While aerobic fitness has been shown to alleviate these effects, the interaction between sex, aerobic capacity, and oxygenation under load is not well understood. This study examined the physiological effects of torso-borne load carriage on respiratory muscle fatigue, skeletal muscle oxygenation, and exercise performance to volitional exhaustion and the degree to which sex and aerobic capacity influence these …

Hot Spring Associated Infectious Diseases In The Great Basin And Southwest, Matthew Bentz

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Like all bodies of freshwater, natural hot springs can harbor pathogenic microorganisms that carry the threat of infectious disease. The unique chemistry, increased temperature, and popularity for bathing may alter the risk profile of hot springs compared to other natural bodies of water. Despite this risk, the role of hot springs as a reservoir for infectious diseases remains understudied, particularly within the context of regional public health. Nevada and the Great Basin/Southwest have increasingly promoted hot springs for the purposes of tourism, and they share a strong link to the cultural heritage of the region. The unknown risk profile and …

Morphological And Transcriptional Responses Of Mammalian Cells To Glucose Stress, Cassandra Burke Aug 2025

Morphological And Transcriptional Responses Of Mammalian Cells To Glucose Stress, Cassandra Burke

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Organismal cells encounter varying conditions, including daily and potentially seasonal fluctuations in available glucose. While some species tightly regulate circulating glucose levels, others tolerate extreme fluctuations, such as frugivorous bats experiencing post-prandial hyperglycemia and hibernating mammals maintaining stable glucose through torpor and hibernation. To investigate how these species-specific strategies influence cellular responses to glucose perturbation, primary dermal fibroblasts from nine mammals – humans, rats, Egyptian fruit bats, brown bear, 13-lined ground squirrel, little brown bat, gelada, honey badger, and Bactrian camel – were exposed to hypoglycemic (2.5mM), baseline (8mM), or hyperglycemic (30mM) treatment. Cell morphology was evaluated using Cell Painting, …

An Examination Of The Purity Culture Beliefs Scale And The Interaction Of Religiosity, Purity Culture Beliefs, And Pornography Use In A Census-Matched United States Sample, Kaelyn R. Griffin

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The impacts of purity culture have been documented in the prevalence of abstinence-only sex education, perception of personal value tied to virginity, and shame and guilt related to sexual behavior. Similarly, models of moral incongruence often examine religiosity as a contributor of distress related to sexual behavior and pornography use, likely tapping into the influence of purity culture without directly naming its presence. This distinction is crucial due to the variety of religious beliefs and practices, some including purity culture and those without sexually restrictive beliefs and practices. Despite this, standardized measures for researching purity culture are limited. Ortiz (2018) …

Understanding Ore Deposit Scale Controls On Au Enrichment In Carlin-Type Au Mineralization: A High-Resolution Study Of The Rita K Deposit, Conner T. Callaway

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Controls on the distribution of gold (Au) within the Rita K Carlin-type deposit are poorly understood. The primary Au-bearing carbonate unit Wispy, is a bioturbated muddy limestone with debris flow clasts that range in size but are typically >5 cm occurring in the lower sections. The orebody is described as a syncline-anticline pair that hosts high-grade Au ore in the fold hinges. The spatial relationship between Au mineralization and fold hinges suggests that shortening due to folding is an important mechanism producing Au-enriched zones. However, the exact mechanism of Au enrichment and deposit-scale controls on Au distribution and fluid evolution …

Housewerk: How Drag Performers Engage In Emotional Labor While Navigating Community Care, Steph O. Landeros Aug 2025

Housewerk: How Drag Performers Engage In Emotional Labor While Navigating Community Care, Steph O. Landeros

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation examines drag performance as a form of service labor shaped by emotional labor, community care, and identity-based inequality. Drawing on interviews with drag performers shows how drag labor blends artistic skill, emotional regulation, interpersonal care, and entrepreneurial labor. While these demands mirror service sector roles in other industries, drag remains underrecognized and undervalued, particularly for performers who do not conform to white, cisgender norms. The study introduces Housewerk—an adaptation of Marlon Bailey’s concept of housework (Bailey, 2013)—to describe the mix of paid and unpaid labor drag performers engage in. Housewerk captures how performers must balance self-preservation (branding, income, …

Mechanisms Of Gold Enrichment In Seafloor Massive Sulfide Deposits: A Study On The Higashi-Aogashima Hydrothermal Field, Claudia Martinez

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The study of Seafloor Massive Sulfides (SMS) deposit formation is vital for assessing both the economic potential and environmental risks posed by future marine mining projects. Metal-rich SMS deposits form in hydrothermal vent systems within tectonically active regions, such as back-arc basins, where faults enhance crustal permeability, enabling fluid migration driven by magmatic heat sources at depth in the crust. Currently our understanding of SMS formation processes is based on bulk-rock geochemical and isotopic data, lacking the necessary spatial and temporal resolution to understand ore forming processes. As a result, critical gaps remain in understanding the exact mechanisms responsible for …
