Although positive sibling relationships are associated with better developmental outcomes for children and adolescents, it is unknown whether siblings may be effective social buffers of physiological stress. In addition, there is little research on whether depressive symptoms may moderate the effectiveness of social buffering. The current study examined (1) whether siblings, compared to strangers, buffered the cortisol response to a social evaluative stressor in children and adolescents, (2) whether depressive symptoms moderated this effect, and (3) whether self-reported sibling relationship quality influenced sibling buffering effectiveness. Plants interact consequentially with microbes spanning mutualism to pathogenicity, with broader effects on large-scale plant community structure. These plant communties, in turn, shape below and aboveground microbial communities through a variety of mechanisms. However, plant diversity-microbial diversity relationships remain broadly inconsistent across environments and among different plant and microbial assemblages. In my dissertation, I work to bridge some of these gaps in plant-microbial ecology in three experimental chapters assessing relationships between plant diversity and microbial diversity, including the influence of belowground-aboveground microbiome interactions, the influence of drought stress, and incorporating different spatial and experimental scales. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) refer to traumatic childhood experiences that individuals may have been exposed to during their youth, such as child maltreatment, domestic violence, or interparental violence. Research has demonstrated that experiencing ACEs in childhood may result in physical and mental illnesses that led to dangerous lifestyle patterns in adulthood. In the local organization, several patients with ACEs presented in the emergency department (ED). The nurses, unaware of ACEs, were unable to detect and respond to the consequences of ACEs. Volunteer fire departments (VFDs) provide essential services in rural areas that cannot afford full-time staff, and they are negatively impacted by declining recruitment and retention. VFD administrators who lack strategies to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters risk reduced emergency services and increased costs for hiring paid firefighters. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, between 21% and 67% of mental health practitioners in the United States experienced signs of burnout. The pandemic exacerbated these challenges, with an increased demand for mental health services. By 2022, 45% of practitioners reported burnout, and the APA’s 2023 Practitioner Pulse Survey noted that psychologists were working at the limits of their capacity, with high levels of burnout. While research on COVID-19 and burnout has expanded for physicians and nurses, less focus has been placed on mental health practitioners' experiences. The rapid integration of VR in various application domains necessitates a deeper understanding of how levels of user experience impact user performance and task efficiency. This study investigates the relationship between experience with VR, expertise in 3d computer gaming, and physiological skills across multiple performance metrics, such as task-completion time, task load, accuracy, manipulation speed, and related spatial requirements. The circulation of highly pathogenic H5 influenza A viruses in cattle, other mammals, and wildlife threatens animal and human health. To address this, we vaccinated heifer-calves with a deactivated rabies-virus-based H5 vaccine, which was well-tolerated and elicited neutralizing antibodies against both clade-1 and clade-2.3.4.4b H5N1 viruses, comparable to naturally H5-infected and convalescing cows. The immune responses to the vaccine platform were durable for at least 200 days and unaffected by preexisting RABV immunity.

Background/Objectives: Effective prophylaxis for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) requires greater understanding of immune correlates of protection. With renewed interest in BCG as an Mtb vaccine, particularly via the intravenous (IV) route, our objective was to characterize both innate and adaptive immune correlates of vaccine-induced pulmonary immunity as potential biomarkers for protective efficacy in a murine model of Mtb infection. Problem: Early identification and timely management of sepsis in the emergency department (ED) is critical to reducing morbidity and mortality. Delays in sepsis recognition and antibiotic administration can worsen outcomes. This project aimed to address these challenges. Intervention: A triage sepsis screening (TSS) tool was implemented over 30-days to improve sepsis identification at triage. Staff education related to knowledge and confidence of sepsis was also provided. Measures: The impact of a TSS tool was evaluated using pre- and post-intervention data on antibiotic timing. Psychiatric hospitals across the United States face a worsening shortage of psychiatrists, particularly in rural and underserved communities, which limits timely mental health care, increases wait times, and places unsustainable strain on the psychiatric workforce. The purpose of this integrative review was to identify administrative strategies that can mitigate psychiatrist understaffing and support sustainable care delivery in psychiatric hospitals. An integrative review methodology was used to explore both empirical and nonempirical literature, resulting in 92 articles, including 32 peer-reviewed sources and several supporting studies selected through a systematic search, screening, and critical appraisal. Sexually-exploitative behaviors by adult male politicians is a significant societal concern that reflects deeper issues involving power misuse, gender inequality, and institutional failure. This qualitative research involved examining societal factors that were linked with this type of misconduct. Guided by the status characteristics theory, the study involved examining how status-related traits such as political power, public image, and institutional affiliation shaped social dynamics and fostered environments that enabled these behaviors. The number of women veterans serving in the military is growing. This qualitative study explored women veterans' perspectives and experiences with gender-specific online social support services, and how that contributes to their social identity after military service. A generic qualitative design was used, and data were collected through semistructured interviews for 10 women veterans who had transitioned out of the military within the last 5 years. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to determine what measures and specific domestic violence policies are working well and what is working poorly in Florida. Messenger RNA (mRNA) from high-risk genotypes of human papillomavirus (hrHPV) is a more specific biomarker for cervical cancer risk than hrHPV DNA due to its ability to differentiate clinically significant infections from transient ones. Detecting mRNA from exfoliated cervical cells, however, is a complex, expensive, and equipment-intensive process, making it infeasible in resource-limited settings. Here we describe a sensitive, specific, and minimally instrumented method to detect HPV16, HPV18, and HPV45 mRNA in exfoliated cervical cells. Introduction: Ethical concerns have been raised by both current and historically controversial neurosurgical interventions for treatment-refractory schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder (TR-SZ). Considering advances in next-generation deep brain stimulation (DBS), initial success in treating a few cases of TR-SZ, and how challenging trial enrollment is, transparency and disseminating knowledge about DBS is important, as is input from involved groups. Here information was presented about DBS as an experimental treatment option for TR-SZ to stakeholders to gauge enthusiasm after consideration of potential risks and benefits.

To explore potential chemoresistance mechanisms and identify therapeutic opportunities in muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), we conduct comprehensive proteogenomic characterization of 46 pre- and 14 post-treatment MIBC tumors incorporating genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and phosphoproteomics. Multi-omics clustering not only recapitulated established molecular subtypes but also revealed subtypes associated with chemotherapy sensitivity. Protein isoform level analysis identifies protein abundance of a short isoform of ATAD1 and RAF family proteins as biomarkers of chemosensitivity. Integration of proteomic and phosphoproteomic data reveals Wnt signaling via GSK3B-S9 phosphorylation and the JAK/STAT pathway as potential targets to overcome chemoresistance. Development Of A New Ground-Based Instrumentation Technique For Low-Resolution Exoplanet Transmission Spectroscopy, Mary Anne Limbach, Luke M. Schmidt, Ryan J. Oelkers, Darren L. Depoy

We present a new instrumentation technique for high-precision, ground-based spectrophotometric measurements ideal for low-resolution (R ∼ 20–60) exoplanet transmission spectroscopy. This technique employs novel thin-film coating technology for wide-band, simultaneous multi-band imaging, enabling high-precision differential photometry through self-referencing and comparison stars. Theoretical calculations and on-sky results show that this method effectively reduces 96% of amplitude scintillation noise and other systematics that typically limit ground-based spectrophotometric precision for bright stars. On-sky results are demonstrated using the custom-built Exoplanet Transmission Spectroscopy Imager (ETSI), deployed at the McDonald Observatory 2.1 m telescope in 2022. For a V = 9.7 mag star, ETSI …

This thesis presents a detailed investigation of plasmonic sensors based on silver (Ag) nanotriangles, focusing on the interaction of plasmonic mode with waveguide modes to achieve Fano resonance for enhanced refractive index sensitivity. For this purpose, Ag nanotriangles were chemically synthesized and were on indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass. The samples were illuminated with laser light of various wavelengths and polarization to excite surface plasmon in the nanotriangle. Observation and characterization of their plasmonic behavior was done experimentally using Photoemission Electron Microscopy (PEEM). INTRODUCTION: GM-CSF is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that promotes an inflammatory phenotype in myeloid cells. The extent and pattern of GM-CSF expression in immune cells have not been fully elucidated. Our goal was to advance this topic using novel GM-CSF reporter/fate reporter transgenic mice.

The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and post-pandemic recovery in urban communities in the Arctic have been substantial, but their gendered aspects remain largely unknown. The goal of this study was to enhance the understanding of the gender-based impact on women in the urban areas of Alaska by exploring strengths and constraints to resilience in the social and economic domains of gender equality during and in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigates the effects of passive flow control techniques on aerodynamic hysteresis primarily in NACA 2412 (cambered) and 0012 (symmetric) wings. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was used to design and evaluate three passive techniques, including outward-facing dimples, leading-edge tubercles, and rectangular vortex generators, prior to experimental validation. These techniques demonstrated improvements in aerodynamic performance in CFD simulations and were therefore selected for wind tunnel testing to analyze their aerodynamic performance and influence on hysteresis behavior.
