Unilateral Facial Paralysis With Facial Nerve Enhancement On Mri In A Patient With Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A Case Report, Aaron Creswell, Abigail Zaratan, Darius Shahbazi, Shahin Shahbazi

Student Publications

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) represents a spectrum of inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathies. Several variants have been reported with distinct symptom profiles. Cranial nerve involvement is relatively common, but it most often presents as bilateral facial nerve palsy at onset. We describe the case of a 66-year-old man who initially presented with extremity paresthesia that rapidly progressed to leg weakness and hyporeflexia. The diagnosis of GBS was confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid analysis, and he was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin. Following treatment, however, he developed facial hemiplegia, which was associated with facial nerve enhancement on MRI. This case represents one of the few reports of …

Introduction: Wunderlich syndrome (WS) is a rare condition characterized by spontaneous, atraumatic renal hemorrhage. It often presents with non-specific symptoms and is typically diagnosed through computed tomography (CT). The most common presentation of WS includes the Lenk triad, which consists of flank pain, a palpable flank mass, and hypovolemic shock. If diagnosis and treatment are delayed, WS can rapidly progress and lead to unfavorable patient outcomes.

Case Report: A 65-year-old male presented to the emergency department with severe sudden-onset left flank pain with subsequent CT angiogram demonstrating an actively bleeding left renal hematoma. The patient was managed conservatively with …

Aerobic glycolysis, termed the Warburg effect, is one of the aberrant metabolic pathways in highly proliferating cells. Glycolysis provides glycolytic metabolites to support the generation of biomass, such as nucleotides, amino acids, and lipids. Research on the direct interactions between glycolysis and other metabolic pathways is an emerging field that has garnered significant interest. Phosphofructokinase-2/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3) activates glycolysis by synthesizing fructose-2,6-bisphosphate (F2,6BP), which allosterically activates the rate-limiting enzyme 6-phosphofructo-1-kinase (PFK-1). In this study, we found that PFKFB3 directly interacts with and regulates the phosphorylation of carbamoyl-phosphate synthetase 2, aspartate transcarbamylase, and dihydroorotase (CAD), the enzyme catalyzing the first three …

Lipid droplets are dynamic organelles whose size and number signify their role in energy. However, owing to cellular heterogeneity and technological limitations, the relationship between the lipolytic ability and lipid droplet morphology is unclear. Here, we developed a live-cell imaging assay using geometric analysis to quantify cellular lipolysis at a single organelle level, designated imaging lipolysis. Using imaging lipolysis and super-resolution imaging, we found that lipolysis is controlled by both lipase-accessible lipid droplet surface area and lipase activity. Moreover, lipid droplet fusion regulatory proteins CLSTN3β/CIDEs promote lipolysis by increasing the total lipid droplet surface area-to-volume ratio in biophysical regulation. We …

Cardiac allograft vasculopathy remains a major cause of late morbidity following heart transplantation. While accumulating evidence implicates innate macrophages in the inflammatory progression of CAV, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In murine models of CAV, we identified proteolytic cleavage of MERTK, a key anti-inflammatory receptor on macrophages, as a contributing factor to CAV progression. In a model of CAV, MERTK deficiency accelerated allograft rejection and increased intimal leukocyte infiltration. In contrast, mice expressing a genetically cleavage-resistant form of MERTK (MertkCR/CR) exhibited prolonged graft survival, reduced intimal thickening, diminished immune cell infiltration, and decreased circulating effector T cells. …

Patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) with central nervous system (CNS) involvement (CNS B-ALL) have poor outcomes and were frequently excluded from CD19-targeting chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell clinical trials. The efficacy and safety of brexucabtagene autoleucel (brexu-cel) in adults with R/R B-ALL was established by the ZUMA-3 trial, which excluded patients with advanced or symptomatic CNS involvement. In this retrospective multicenter analysis, we investigated the safety and efficacy of brexu-cel in patients with CNS B-ALL using data from the ROCCA (Real-World Outcomes Collaborative for CAR T in ALL) consortium. Of 189 patients who received infusion, 31 …

Introduction: Post-ligation cardiac syndrome (PLCS) represents a state of severe post-intervention cardiopulmonary instability, seen in up to 50% of extremely premature infants after surgical closure of the patent ductus arteriosus (PDA); yet an evidence-based approach to treatment of this condition does not exist. The objective of this study is to determine the efficacy and safety of prophylactic milrinone in reducing incidence of PLCS and/or mortality within the first 7 days following PDA closure. The central hypothesis is that administration of intravenous milrinone will reduce the incidence of PLCS or death within 7 days of PDA closure either by percutaneous device …

The Role Of Recruited Adipose Stromal Cells And Their Fibroblastic Differentiation In Cancer, Lingyi Cai, Mikhail G Kolonin, Dimitris Anastassiou Aug 2025

The Role Of Recruited Adipose Stromal Cells And Their Fibroblastic Differentiation In Cancer, Lingyi Cai, Mikhail G Kolonin, Dimitris Anastassiou

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Adipose stromal cells (ASCs) are perivascular mesenchymal progenitors of adipose tissue. In cancer patients, ASCs can mobilize and migrate to the tumor, where they subsequently play an important role in cancer progression. This biological process involves the conversion of recruited ASCs into cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). ASC-derived CAFs influence the tumor microenvironment through extracellular matrix remodeling, vascularization, and immunomodulation. These and other processes mediated by secreted paracrine factors also affect gene expression in carcinoma cells to promote the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), metabolic adaptation, survival, and invasiveness of cancer cells. ASC-derived CAFs can enhance tumor aggressiveness, accounting in part for the link …

Purpose: The conventional assumption that P values ≤ 0.05 imply reproducible effects has come under recent criticism. This concern is particularly relevant in oncology, as phase III oncology trials, which directly inform practice, are usually not repeated. Using advanced modeling techniques, we investigated the relationship between P values and reproducibility in oncology.

Methods: We obtained the signal-to-noise ratio distribution in phase III oncology using outcomes from 632 two-arm superiority trials enrolling 496,219 patients. With this distribution, we estimated successful replication probability as the probability that a replicate trial, having the same design, effect size, and standard error, would have a …

Reforming The Indian Bar: The Limits Of Technological Solutions, Varsha Aithala, Karthik Suresh

A majority of Indians do not have effective access to legal services, despite the constitutional promise of access to justice. There are two intertwined reasons for this: the unavailability of a sufficient number of good quality lawyers, and the high costs of accessing legal services. The Indian legal profession is highly unequal, with ‘prestige’ being the currency of upward professional mobility. The professional regulator, the Bar Council of India, simply lacks the capacity to regulate quality. As a consequence, clients lack the information to access lawyers, and to understand the outcomes they desire from them, and the fees they have …

The Nucleocapsid protein (N) of SARS-CoV-2 plays a critical role in the viral lifecycle by regulating RNA replication and by packaging the viral genome. N and RNA phase separate to form condensates that may be important for these functions. Both functions occur at membrane surfaces, but how N toggles between these two membrane-associated functional states is unclear. Here, we reveal that phosphorylation switches how N condensates interact with membranes, in part by modulating condensate material properties. Our studies also show that phosphorylation alters N's interaction with viral membrane proteins. We gain mechanistic insight through structural analysis and molecular simulations, which …

Defrnd: Detergent-Free Reconstitution Into Native Nanodiscs With Designer Membrane Scaffold Peptides, Qian Ren, Vinay Idikuda, Baron Chanda, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Membrane scaffold protein-based nanodiscs have facilitated unprecedented structural and biophysical analysis of membrane proteins in a near-native lipid environment. However, successful reconstitution of membrane proteins in nanodiscs requires prior solubilization and purification in detergents, which may impact their physiological structure and function. Furthermore, the detergent-mediated reconstitution of nanodiscs is unlikely to recapitulate the precise composition or asymmetry of native membranes. To circumvent this fundamental limitation of traditional nanodisc technology, we herein describe the development of membrane-solubilizing peptides to directly extract membrane proteins from native cell membranes into nanoscale discoids. By systematically protein engineering and screening, we create a class of …

Danicamtiv Reduces Myosin's Working Stroke But Activates The Thin Filament By Accelerating Actomyosin Attachment, Brent Scott, Lina Greenberg, Caterina Squarci, Kenneth S Campbell, Michael J Greenberg

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Heart failure is a leading cause of death worldwide, and even with current treatments, the 5-y transplant-free survival rate is only ~50 to 70%. As such, there is a need to develop new treatments for patients that improve survival and quality of life. Recently, there have been efforts to develop small molecules for heart failure that directly target components of the sarcomere, including cardiac myosin. Danicamtiv is one of these molecules; however, its direct effects on myosin's single molecule mechanics and kinetics are not well understood. Using optical trapping techniques, stopped flow transient kinetics, and in vitro reconstitution assays, we …

'What The World Would Be’: How Creating A Shared World Through Collaborative Roleplaying Helps Us Deal With Real-World Challenges, Pablo Muslera

Imaginings: creative practice and inquiry

A creative prose artefact and critical exegesis illustrate how roleplaying games explore community and identity. A prose dramatisation of a cooperative TTRPG (table top roleplaying game) juxtaposes the collaboratively imagined world, and the reality from which it is an escape. Themes of gender identity, isolation, precarious work and fluctuating health are explored within the timeframe of the Covid outbreak in Adelaide mid-2020, with the roleplaying session serving as a respite from insecure work and health challenges, while supporting creative agency and the expression of meaningful selfhood through collaborative play and problem-solving. This reflects a broader phenomenon of the increased popularity …

Cpr: Knowing Through The Making, Dugald Graydon

Imaginings: creative practice and inquiry

The methodologies used in the creation of artistic work and, in the academic setting, the explanation of the processes of artistic inquiry and their findings is necessarily non-prescriptive and potentially requires artists to innovate on methodology, combining existing methods and creating new ones on a case-by-case basis. Creative Practice Research addresses these issues by offering a methodologically diverse range of principles that artists can use to articulate their subjective creative practices in an academic setting, challenging traditional research methods while also legitimising creative work within academia. The following paper provides a brief application of this methodology in the context of …

Orchestrating Brilliance In The Recording Studio: Mixing Music To Record Music, Adrian Carroll Aug 2025

Orchestrating Brilliance In The Recording Studio: Mixing Music To Record Music, Adrian Carroll

Imaginings: creative practice and inquiry

This paper is a report on a heuristic inquiry into music recording practice and workflow to arrive at the essence of experience. Through professional reflection on a music recording, we investigated the recording process and student experience; this was used to identify, explore and expose tacit professional practice. The central theme that unfolded revealed benefits in mixing music during a recording session. Other themes of workflow efficiency, and emotional expression, also emerged from the data collection. The research culminated in a creative synthesis in the form of a research question: Can live studio recordings be a viable option for artists, …

The Methodological Approach Of My Emergent Auto-Ethnographical Journey In Arts-Based Practice As Research (Abr): Music & Sound-Making, Meaning-Making, Self-Making, David L. Page

Imaginings: creative practice and inquiry

This article discusses the methodological approach of my professional Doctor of Creative Industries (DCI) Research Project 1 study. The aim of higher degree research (HDR) Project 1 was to investigate my DIY music & sound-making practice and self as a practitioner, in the process of creating and producing a DIY music artefact. Specifically: to investigate why I as the practitioner felt an authentic connection with one form of music & sound-making (acoustic instrument-based), and not a connection with another form of music & sound-making (digital virtual-based).

In Tensile // In Between, Corinna Di Niro Aug 2025

In Tensile // In Between, Corinna Di Niro

Imaginings: creative practice and inquiry

"In Tensile // In Between" operates as both artistic artefact and theoretical critique, demonstrating how creative practice can embody and extend academic discourse. This creative-critical work examines shifting perceptions of course delivery within creative tertiary education, arguing that project-based learning enables the seamless embedding of socio-cultural discourse and theories within practical making processes.

The poem interrogates how educational environments can cultivate critical thinking through what I term "tensile pedagogy"—an approach that maintains productive charge between opposing forces rather than seeking synthesis or resolution. This concept builds upon King's (2017) work on pedagogy as tension, which argues that "tension and incompleteness …
