Relational Online Teaching: Connecting With Students At A Distance, Laura Sheets, Robert J. Snyder

Relational teaching pedagogies place the connection between instructor and student at the heart of student learning. These practices can include creating community, designing interactive learning experiences, and recognizing the student as a whole person. But in an online classroom, relational pedagogies must be woven into the course design and the instructor must be intentional about their desire to connect with students. In this article, the authors will demonstrate how they applied the Five Good Things from Relational Cultural Theory to an asynchronous information literacy course in order to connect with students in an online learning environment.

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

We report a conceptual replication of Akbari et al. (2020), who study the impact of co-ethnicity and kinship on behavior in an experimental “bribery game”. In the game, player A can offer a bribe to B, who can help A by inefficiently transferring resources from passive third-party C. We replicate the finding that by varying the relatedness of A, B and C, we can substantially modulate the willingness of A to offer the bribe and the willingness of B to reciprocate the bribe by harming C. The findings are consistent with theories of kin altruism and ethnic favoritism.

Learning activities presented through games can stimulate students’ competitive spirit and, in turn, increase their motivation. Observations and interviews showed that approximately 70% of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Pakis had low learning interest. The researchers therefore implemented the traditional game Congklak to increase students’ interest in science. The study aimed to examine the implementation of an educational traditional game—Congklak—to improve science learning interest, competitiveness, active participation, and motivation among all eighth-grade students. When a flying wing comes within close proximity to the ground, a phenomenon called ground effect occurs where the lift is increased and the induced drag is decreased. This research seeks to determine the optimal dihedral distribution predicted by lifting-line theory that minimizes induced drag in ground effect. Despite some limitations, using lifting-line theory for this study allows for quick results across a large range of design variables, which would be infeasible for high-fidelity methods. This study aimed to improve students’ learning outcomes and active participation through a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model combined with a Culturally Responsive Teaching approach in mathematics, particularly on direct proportion. Initial observations at SMPIT Insan Permata, Malang, showed that seventh-grade students were not actively engaged in mathematics, a compulsory school subject. The study used classroom action research conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. This study aimed to determine the nutritional status and motor skills of seventh-grade students at SMPN 3 Malang. It used an observational approach with a descriptive research design. The participants were 32 seventh-grade students. Data were collected using Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements and the Kids Athletics test. The results show that the largest proportion of students was in the severely underweight category, accounting for 42.5% or 14 students.
