It has become a philosophical commonplace to distinguish actions that are merely right from actions that possess moral worth. To be right, an action needs only to accord with the demands of morality. To possess moral worth, an action needs not only to be right, but to be non-accidentally so. While this much is uncontroversial, what is involved in this sense of non-accidentality is a matter of ongoing debate. This thesis lies at the heart of that debate. This thesis explores the role of mechanical properties and elastic couplings in freestanding paradigmatic ferroic monolayers within the framework of density functional theory. This dissertation is comprised of three interconnected published studies: (i) establishing the elastic behavior across a temperature-driven phase transition in SnSe monolayers; (ii) thermally-driven phase transitions in graphene-like silicene, germanene, and stanene, examining the structural stability and band gap occlusion; and (iii) magnetoelastic coupling in an Ising-like CrSiTe3 monolayer, focused on assessing magnetic contributions to the material stiffness by establishing a proper non-magnetic reference.

As organizations scale model training across large clusters and clouds, data poisoning has emerged as a significant practical threat. Most existing research focuses on data poisoning in single-node environments. Far fewer studies have compared the effectiveness of attacks across parallel training strategies, where factors like gradient aggregation and distributed memory ceilings fundamentally alter attack detectability and its impacts. This thesis investigates the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate high-quality NPC dialogue by comprehensively evaluating four state-of-the-art models: Gemma 3 27B, Mistral 7B, QWEN 2.5, and LLAMA 3.1. The exclusive breastfeeding rate among first-time mothers is much lower than among multiparous women, which has been attributed to difficulties assuming the new role and a lack of breastfeeding skills. This study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of first-time mothers' breastfeeding experiences and the factors that influence these experiences during the early postpartum period in Nairobi, Kenya.

Women in recovery from opioid use disorder (OUD) have unmet sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs resulting in health disparities such as unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections/HIV infection compared with women without OUD. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of co-occurring multiple social-ecologic influences (individual, interpersonal, community, society) on SRH among women in recovery from OUD.

Objective: Exome sequencing (ES) benefits the genetic work-up for fetuses with structural anomalies, but data on its utility for fetuses without anomalies and stillbirths is more limited. We report our experience with prenatal ES for all three indications.

Method: We retrospectively reviewed results from 344 trio-ES performed for fetuses with structural anomalies (N = 262), stillbirths (N = 39), and fetuses without anomalies (N = 43), many of which had a relevant family history. The Doll’s Head Trail is a grassroots, low-art installation nestled within a Southeast Atlanta wildlife preserve. Constructed by volunteers and visitors from decades of environmental debris, the trail converts waste into folk art-inspired “junk” displays. The creative upcycling ranges from a miniscule shrine to “Toxic Masculinity” to a stark shoe pile commemorating child gun violence. This article details how queer theory’s “temporal turn” provides insights into material performance as collaborative regeneration. The curious vignettes playfully invert hierarchies, revealing the merits of small-time memorialization. The goal of this research project was to identify and quantify the terpenes in five commercial cannabis products (dried bud, kief, two tinctures, and a pain cream) using gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Terpene identification and quantification were conducted using GC-MS and GC-FID, with a standard sample containing 21 terpenes of known concentrations. To determine the most effective extraction conditions, three organic solvents (ethanol, acetonitrile, and ethyl acetate) were employed. Population forecasts to the year 2100 show that the numbers of people of working age (20-64) will diminish in North America (Canada, Mexico, and the United States), and dramatically diminish among those of the younger working ages (20-34 and 35-44). Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have garnered significant research interest due to their ability to harvest mechanical energy efficiently. In this study, we report a TENG composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as triboelectric layers. To enhance charge generation in the PDMS composite polymer, we incorporated lithium niobate (LiNbO3) nanoparticles, leveraging their piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties. The LiNbO3 nanoparticles were synthesized using a solid-state reaction method, resulting in two distinct phases: triclinic LiNbO3 and monoclinic LiNb3O8. We assessed the number of sessions and boosters needed for reducing caregiver burden and depressive symptoms among Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) care partners.

Methods: We conducted a randomised factorial-design trial of bilingual PST/DSJ among ADRD care partners (NCT04748666).
