The sensory environment plays a critical role in shaping learners’ attention, engagement, and retention. This thesis investigates how varying levels of sensory input in virtual reality (VR) classrooms influence learning for two age groups—children and young adults—and explores how individual differences in sensory processing moderate these effects. Using immersive VR technology to simulate classroom settings, two experimental studies were conducted. Study One involved 60 children aged 6–15 years, recruited primarily through a university-run summer camp. Economic market uncertainties, like those witnessed during pandemics and supply chain-related challenges, introduce complexity in ascertaining precise price estimates for construction materials. Despite some studies on risk allocation in construction projects utilizing quantitative and qualitative approaches, these studies fail to explain the underlying process of risk allocation due to a lack of theoretical support, indicating a need for a more structured and theoretically grounded approach to understanding risk allocation, specifically under volatile market conditions. Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS) is a controversial illness associated with a host of distressing symptoms—most notably sexual dysfunctions—reported to persist long beyond the intake of finasteride itself. It appears the PFS population consists exclusively of younger patients with alopecia, even though millions take a higher (if pharmacologically similar) dosage of finasteride for benign prostatic hyperplasia. This dichotomy is not what one would expect to observe if finasteride caused PFS. No medical explanation of this one-sided syndrome exists. The surge of cases of PFS following a publicity spike in 2011 and 2012 suggests that PFS owes much nonbiological factors. The present analysis …

This study synthesizes interdisciplinary evidence on game-based interventions for military veterans, mapping neurological mechanisms to clinically relevant outcomes while outlining design principles for community programs that leverage interactive media. The review characterizes how structured gameplay supports emotional regulation through attentional control, predictable feedback schedules, and reward-mediated learning that elevates motivation and mood; links to dopaminergic signaling and reduced rumination suggest plausible pathways for affective stabilization. Executive functions receive targeted engagement via strategy, puzzle, and action mechanics that demand working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibition, and rapid decision-making, providing ecologically valid practice with measurable transfer to daily functioning. Risk Premia-Return Spillovers Among Commodity-Us Equity Markets, Marinela Adriana Finta

This study examines the risk premia-return spillovers of eight commodities (corn, soybean, wheat, copper, silver, gold, oil, and natural gas) and the U.S. equity market from 2008 to 2016. We define volatility, skewness, and kurtosis risk premia as the difference between implied and realized moments. Our results reveal an increasing trend in cross-market and cross-moment spillovers until mid-2012, with various announcements explaining these effects. Moreover, we document substantial cross-energy and cross-metal spillovers to the equity market and cross-return spillovers to risk premia. The Jones Act, a protectionist law which requires domestic water transport to be performed by vessels that are US-made, crewed, owned, and flagged, imposes inflated costs on consumers in Puerto Rico. To better understand how this translates into everyday impacts, in this assignment students compare the cost of a grocery run in Puerto Rico and the United States. To do this, they find the price of various products in two supermarkets: Pueblo, the largest grocery store chain in Puerto Rico, and Kroger, the second-largest grocery chain in the United States. To do this, they will first watch the Suncoast Emmy award-winning documentary, The Last Colony to learn about the history of Puerto Rico and its complex political relationship with the United States. Then, guided by the professor, they will use a modified version of the ethnocharette experimental pedagogy, developed by the University of California at Irvine’s Center for Ethnography, to understand, organize, and think more deeply about the themes of the documentary. The paper presents a priori error analysis of the shallow neural network approximation to the solution to the indefinite elliptic equation and a cutting-edge implementation of the Orthogonal Greedy Algorithm (OGA) tailored to overcome the challenges of indefinite elliptic problems, which is a domain where conventional approaches often struggle due to the lack of coerciveness. A rigorous priori error analysis that shows the neural network's ability to approximate the solution of indefinite problems is confirmed numerically by OGA. The complex architecture of the cornea, characterized by specifically organized collagen fibrils and distinct cellular layers, poses significant challenges for traditional tissue engineering strategies to replicate its native function. 3D Bioprinting offers a promising solution by enabling the precise, layer-by-layer fabrication of corneal tissues, closely mimicking the essential characteristics needed for vision restoration and long-term graft success. The internet plays a crucial role in modern life, but equal access to it is not guaranteed. This inequality is only starker since the recent overruling of the Chevron doctrine that afforded agencies deference in their interpretation of statutes and the second Trump administration’s hostility toward net neutrality––a policy that prevents internet service providers from charging more money for access to faster internet while slowing other users’ access. For those living on tribal lands, rescission of net neutrality policies has unique implications due to the federal government’s trust responsibility to American Indians.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates pesticide use in the United States. The EPA is charged by the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) with ensuring that a pesticide will not cause unreasonable adverse effects on the environment. Incident reports (documentation of exposure and injury from pesticide applications) can serve as a reality check on the pesticide registration decisions made by the EPA scientists and risk managers. The EPA collects incident reports on human, domestic animal, and ecological injury. The FIFRA section 6(a)(2) rule requires the pesticide registrant (generally, the company or other entity that wishes to market …

Each winter in Florida, thousands of manatees gather in the warm water outflows of power plants. These refuges play a crucial role for the Florida manatee: when ocean temperatures drop, manatees shelter at these artificial sources to survive. But in recent years, thousands of manatees wintering at the Florida Power & Light Company’s Cape Canaveral Clean Energy Center have died. The reason? Seagrass beds––a primary food source for manatees––are vanishing, killed off by pollution from agricultural, industrial, and residential sources.

Objectives: Textbook costs have escalated for students and the library. The objective of this scoping review is to assist libraries in developing a collection policy for course-required textbooks informed by themes and outcomes recognized in the existing body of research.

Methods: The scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O’Malley’s framework and the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis. The team did an environmental scan, constructed a comprehensive search strategy in six databases, and conducted hand and cited-reference searching. Included papers were quantitative or qualitative studies with outcomes described and mapped to prevailing themes.

This classroom activity uses the “teach a man to fish” proverb as a starting point to analyze assumptions about service and introduce students to a broader variety of activities for civic participation. Using the Pathways Model of Public Service and Civic Engagement as a foundation, students critically examine different approaches to civic participation and examine each pathway in terms of its benefits, limitations, and ethical considerations.
