Climate Change-Related Threats To Railroads: Implications For Threat, Hazard And Risk Assessment, Frances L. Edwards, Daniel C. Goodrich

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Climate change has created new challenges for railroads around the world. The rail systems operate in open environments, subjecting them to increased heat, changing locations of heavy rains, developing sea level rise and storm surge, and a longer and stronger wildfire season. This research investigates how an updated threat and hazard identification and risk assessment (THIRA) can lead to the development of climate adaptation strategies that limit damage and disruption to the railroad enterprise. The THIRA analyzes which threats are of most concern in a specific rail segment, and which climate change adaptation strategies give a beneficial return on investment.

Background/Objectives: The incidence of dysrhythmia after blunt thoracic trauma varies in the literature from 8-75%, and the complication rate from these dysrhythmias is not well studied. The aims of this study are to (1) identify the incidence of dysrhythmia following blunt thoracic trauma, (2) identify risk factors associated with developing a dysrhythmia, and (3) identify the incidence of cardiac intervention after developing a dysrhythmia. We hypothesize that blunt thoracic trauma may result in post-injury dysrhythmias. Air pollution is a significant public health issue that impacts lung health, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Both natural and anthropogenic sources of air pollution give rise to a variety of toxic compounds, including particulate matter (PM), ozone (O₃), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Exposure to these pollutants is strongly associated with the development and exacerbation of respiratory diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Scholars are grappling with what educational and pedagogical approaches are needed to create sustainable entrepreneurs able to cope with sustainability challenges. This paper explores the impact of a student-focused climate entrepreneurship education initiative (CEE) in Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin). The paper draws on models and frameworks in the literature that integrate programme objectives and pedagogical methods with impact. The paper addresses two key questions. Firstly, how are students impacted by CEE in terms of the affectedness, skills development and the intention to start a climate enterprise. Information Systems Faculty Publications

The growing integration of chatbots in e-commerce customer service presents opportunities and challenges for online retailers in shaping effective artificial intelligence (AI) strategies. This study evaluates human-only, AI-only, and human–AI collaboration strategies using an agent-based simulation model across varying levels of task complexity, service volume, and product margin. Results show that the AI-only strategy excels in low-volume, simple tasks due to its cost-effectiveness, while the human–AI collaboration strategy proves superior in managing high-volume or complex inquiries by scaling human involvement to meet demand. For high-margin products, this collaborative approach delivers the best service, whereas the AI-only strategy is optimal for …

Ultracold neutral plasmas represent a regime of plasmas that is not entirely described by theory, but is critical to our understanding of many phenomena. Though their low temperature makes observing them more manageable, even "confined" ultracold plasmas do not remain contained for more than a few hundred microseconds. No steady state or long-term confinement of an ultracold plasma created by pulse ionization has ever been demonstrated. In this thesis, the construction of a Penning trap for calcium ultracold neutral plasma is presented.
