Electric Submersible Pumps (ESPs) are one of the important artificial lift methods for sustaining production in mature and high-water-cut wells; but may suffer frequent failures due to mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, chemical, and operational failures. These failures can yield substantial deferred production and intervention costs. Plenty of ESP installations are fitted with downhole sensors. Yet, it is observed that the current industry practice underutilizes the wealth of available sensor and operational data and lacks standardized, explainable failure-type identification and classification.

Dinitrogen (N) fixation provides bioavailable nitrogen to the biosphere. However, in some habitats (e.g., sediments), the metabolic pathways of organisms carrying out N fixation are unclear. We present metabolic models representing various chemotrophic N fixers, which simulate potential pathways of electron transport and energy flow, resulting in predictions of whole-cell stoichiometries. By balancing mass, electrons, and energy for metabolic half-reactions, we quantify the electron usage for nine N fixers. Our results demonstrate that all modeled organisms fix sufficient N for growth. Aerobic organisms allocate more electrons to N fixation and growth, yielding more biomass and fixing more N, while methanogens …

Hypertension has been previously associated with higher intraoperative bleeding risk in patients undergoing Mohs micrographic surgery. However, the risks of common postoperative Mohs micrographic surgery complications have not been substantiated by large studies. Our study aimed to assess the risks of common Mohs micrographic surgery complications for patients with hypertension utilizing the TriNetX database, a global health records database encompassing over 105 million patients' data, from January 2009 to January 2024. After 1:1 propensity score matching for age, sex, race, diabetes, nicotine dependence, obesity, and anticoagulant use, the final analysis included 80,739 patients in each cohort of patients with hypertension …

Lung adenocarcinomas (LUAD) are a pressing global health problem with enduring lethality and rapidly shifting epidemiology. Proteogenomic studies integrating proteomics and post-translational modifications with genomics can identify clinical strata and oncogenic mechanisms, but have been underpowered to examine effects of ethnicity, smoking and environmental exposures, or sex on this heterogeneous disease. Chronic urinary tract infections are persistent bacterial infections with the potential to drive antibiotic resistance. Like other persistent bacterial infections, intracellular bacterial reservoirs and biofilm formation hinder the clearance of pathogens despite long courses of antibiotic therapy. New strategies for treatment of these persistent infections are needed. Here we describe the results of an open-label individual patient study using bacteriophage therapy to treat a chronic urinary tract infection in an immunocompetent 72-year-old woman without underlying urolithiasis or indwelling devices. We co-administered HP3.1, HP3, and ES19 bacteriophages with demonstrated in vitro activity via bladder instillation, orally, and as a topical formulation. …

Adult obesity rates have increased from approximately 15% in 1980 to more than 40% of adults in 2018, and the rates continue to increase. White-collar workers are disproportionately impacted as a result of the sedentary work performed in a white-collar work environment. Increased levels of obesity result in elevated levels of psychological stress, chronic health conditions, and increased organizational costs. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to understand the lived experiences of the obese white-collar worker who has used a worksite wellness program to lose weight and to understand what additional support was needed to achieve weight loss. …

This commentary explores how micro- and nanoplastics, tiny plastic fragments present throughout the environment, pose emerging strategic challenges beyond environmental and health concerns. While micro- and nanoplastics are now found in water, soil, plants, animals, and even human bodies, their long-term effects on ecosystems, food and water safety, and human health remain poorly understood. These particles can infiltrate critical systems, potentially affecting troop readiness, infrastructure resilience, and national food security. Nanoplastics may also serve as vectors for biological or chemical contaminants, complicating detection and mitigation. This research assesses how advancements in composites material research affect communities from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, using a dual track strategy to quantitatively and qualitatively examine their impact. A keyword-based classification algorithm was applied to a sample of research papers from ScienceDirect spanning the last 24 years to quantify which engineering industries benefit most from this research. The findings indicate that the construction industry benefits the most, followed by the automotive, defense, renewable energy, and biomedical sectors. Introduction: Meridianin C (MC) is a marine-derived indole alkaloid that has demonstrated kinase inhibitory and anti-tumor activities. Despite its diverse biological properties, no previous reports have systematically evaluated the in vivo quantitative analysis of MC and its metabolites. Methods: In this study, MC was synthesized following a previously reported procedure with slight modifications. A sensitive, accurate, and reliable ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS) method was developed to simultaneously detect MC and its five major metabolites (MC-1-N-O-GluA, MC-1-N-O-SO3H, MC-2′-N-O-GluA, MC-2′-N-O-SO3H, and MC-O-GluA-didehydration) in rat plasma. Objective:

Unpredictability in early life is an understudied aspect of early life adversity that provides important signals to the child about their environment. Recent work shows the predictability of patterns of parental signals on a moment-to-moment timescale sculpts the developing brain during sensitive windows, offering a potential pathway through which early life experiences shape child development. Both experimental non-human animal models and observational human research show sex-specific links between early life exposure to unpredictable patterns of parental sensory signals and aberrant offspring development. The impact of predictability of sensory signals on physical health outcomes, such as BMI, remains unknown. Here …

Depression is common yet frequently underdiagnosed in group home settings serving adult and geriatric residents. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aimed to improve staff knowledge and promote routine use of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a validated depression screening tool, through an evidence-based educational intervention. A practice gap was identified at the project site due to inconsistent use and documentation of the PHQ-9, primarily linked to staff knowledge deficits. The project explored whether educating staff on PHQ-9 administration, scoring, and documentation would lead to improved knowledge, as measured by pre- and post-intervention assessments. The problem explored in this study was the low graduation rate of first-generation college students at the university study site. Using Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore first-generation college graduates’ beliefs about their educational experience as students upon entering a bachelor’s degree program, identify obstacles, and understand ways to master those obstacles to successfully graduate. Six first-generation college graduates from the study site were recruited from FIRST, an on-campus support organization, for semistructured interviews using purposeful sampling. This dissertation examines the role literature plays in understanding black life post-reconstruction and post-civil rights movement. Specifically, I explore the continuation of injustices and mistreatment for black workers, the role black labor plays during the first and second post-reconstructions, and how literature can be used in framing this discussion. The similarities between these periods help us to better understand the cycle of racist societal expectations and the challenges black workers face integrating into society, discriminatory mandates required of black workers, the unfair job market, and forced labor. This dissertation analyzes conceptual metaphors of psychological motion and stability in medieval English religious literature. I trace how language itself structures cultural approaches to epistemology, spiritual knowing, and virtue. Chapter One examines Alfred’s translation of Neoplatonic metaphors of psychological movement in the OE translations of The Consolation of Philosophy and Augustine’s Soliloquies. I argue that the reconfiguration of these metaphors into images of stability reveals an epistemology centered on certainty. Chapter Two compares the omission of motive psychological metaphor in Cynewulf’s Juliana and Ælfric’s “St. Agatha and St. Lucy” in process of translation. This research article examines why the racialization of Brazilian jiu-jitsu has so often been invisible to non-Brazilians. It argues that Brazilian jiu-jitsu emerged in a highly racially stratified context and looks in particular at challenge matches that the Gracie family engaged in with fighters who practiced capoeira or judo.  It argues that through these competitions, not only was Brazilian jiu-jitsu located within Brazil’s racial hierarchy, but it was often positioned as ‘white,’ though usually in an unspoken manner. The ‘invisibility’ of Brazilian jiu-jitsu’s racialization is connected to Brazil’s hegemonic racial system where race is both of central social importance, yet …

Single-cell studies on breast tissue have contributed to a change in our understanding of breast epithelial diversity that has, in turn, precipitated a lack of consensus on breast cell types. The confusion surrounding this issue highlights a possible challenge for advancing breast atlas efforts. In this perspective, we present our consensus on the identities, properties, and naming conventions for breast epithelial cell types and propose goals for future atlas endeavors. Our proposals and their underlying thought processes aim to catalyze the adoption of a shared model for this tissue and to serve as guidance for other investigators facing similar challenges.

Drills Or Distress? Understanding The Psychological Effects Of Active Shooter Drills On Adolescents, Jeff R Temple, Elizabeth Baumler, Christian Paige Owen, Leila Wood

Background: We sought to better understand the impact of exposure to active shooter drills (ASDs) on students' perceived stress, including those with disabilities and prior experiences with trauma.

Methods: We used data from a longitudinal study of ethnically diverse students (n = 2,033; 53.5% female) originally recruited in 2018 and followed annually thereafter. In addition to self-reporting on their perceived stress with ASDs, participants responded to questions about adverse childhood experiences, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and disability.

Results: Female students and those with a disability, probable anxiety, and suicidal ideation were more likely to be anxious after an ASD.
