In this essay, I examine the character of Mary Osgood in North Woods by Daniel Mason, arguing that her behavior reflects traits associated with psychopathy. While Mary and her sister Alice initially appear to represent a typical form of sibling rivalry, Mary’s cruelty, emotional detachment, and manipulation suggest something more troubling from the beginning. When Mary ultimately kills Alice, this shocking moment confirms the darker implications that had been subtly foreshadowed throughout the narrative. By drawing on psychological research on empathy deficits and psychopathic traits, I argue that Mary’s actions align with modern understandings of psychopathy. Mason uses this characterization …

Commentary

This article explains how neuromorphic artificial intelligence (AI), AI designed to mimic brain-like reasoning, differs from traditional rule-based systems and what that means for military decision-making. Unlike mechanistic AI that reacts predictably to inputs, neuromorphic AI integrates data and context more like the human brain, allowing adaptive responses in complex environments. While this could improve how autonomous systems operate in uncertain conflict zones, it also raises new questions about control, predictability, accountability, and ethical use. Climate is changing rapidly in mountain environments, giving rise to increasing variability in weather, incidence of extremeevents, and alteration of the cryosphere. Natural hazards, such as snow avalanches, and the ecological communities they impactmay be particularly sensitive to such change. While avalanches may impose both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ effects on mountain ecosys-tems, the direct impacts that lead to mortality have particularly important implications for future viability and resilience ofslow-growing alpine wildlife populations. This study was focused on certified nursing assistants’ (CNAs) views of the association between their motivation, job satisfaction, and the quality of care they offer to patients in one chosen nursing home center in New Jersey. Herzberg’s two-factor theory of motivation and a generic qualitative design were used to explore CNAs’ experiences and perspectives relating to their motivation, job fulfillment, and the level of care. The study included semi structured interviews with the 12 CNAs, who were directly and consistently in contact with their respective patients at the selected nursing home center. The Child and Family Services Review (CFSR) is a federally mandated continuous quality improvement process that sets and assesses national child welfare performance standards. The CFSR impacts agency practices and caseworker responsibilities. Research has linked high turnover rates, averaging around 30% nationally, to agency-related variables, some of which are influenced by the CFSR. Given this context, it was necessary to understand how the CFSR performance standards impact the workforce. Association Of Genetic Scores Related To Insulin Resistance With Neurological Outcomes In Ancestrally Diverse Cohorts From The Trans-Omics For Precision Medicine (Topmed) Program, Chloé Sarnowski, Yixin Zhang, Farah Ammous, Lincoln M. P. Shade, Daniel Dicorpo, Xueqiu Jian, Donna K. Arnett, Thomas R. Austin, John Blangero, Joanne E. Curran

To better characterize the potential biological mechanisms underlying insulin resistance (IR) and dementia, we derive cross-population and population specific polygenic scores [PSs] for fasting insulin and IR-related partitioned PSs [pPSs]. We conduct a cross-sectional study of the associations of these genetic scores with neurological outcomes in >17k participants (36% men, mean age 55 yrs) from the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program (50% Non-Hispanic White, 23% Black/African American, 21% Hispanic/Latino American, and 4% Asian American). We report significant negative associations (P <  0.002) of the cross-population (P = 1.3 × 10-5) and European (PEA = 3.0 × 10-8) fasting insulin PSs with total cranial volume, and of a metabolic syndrome European PS with general cognitive function (BEA = -0.13, PEA = 0.0002) and lateral ventricular volume (BEA = 0.09, PEA = 0.002). We identify suggestive negative associations (P <  0.007) of metabolic syndrome and obesity pPSs with general cognitive function, and of lipodystrophy pPSs with total cranial volume. A higher genetic predisposition to IR is associated with lower brain size, and a genetic predisposition to specific IR-related type 2 diabetes subtypes, such as metabolic syndrome and mechanisms of IR mediated through obesity and lipodystrophy, is potentially involved in cognitive decline.

This case report describes the outcomes of strength- and power-focused exercise training in an adult with multiple comorbidities.

This study examines Kuwait’s stock market sectors’ response to the 2020 dual shock of the COVID-19 pandemic and the oil price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia. Traditional cointegration and causality models support the analysis alongside the frequency domain to assess short-run dynamics. The research sample integrates daily data from December 31, 2015, to February 23, 2022. The core research findings indicate that the consumer services, industrials, and basic materials sectors were the most affected by fluctuations in oil prices, highlighting the vulnerability of Kuwait’s oil-dependent economy. Substance-use disorder (SUD) poses significant biological, psychological, and sociological impacts that negatively affect areas of employment, health, family systems, and interactions with social welfare and legal agencies. Although there has been research on SUD treatment, relapse rates remain high at approximately 40%–75%, demonstrating a gap in the literature involving individuals who completed SUD treatment and continuation or management of recovery. Objectives: This study tests whether and how the Canadian public health workforce differed from the Canadian general population in their political attitudes, worldviews and policy preferences related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: Nearly identical surveys were fielded to the Canadian public health workforce in 2021 through leading public health associations and to a census-balanced sample of the general Canadian population in February and March 2021. through a consumer quota sample for a survey of the general population.

Results: The Canadian public health workforce demonstrates systematically more left-wing pro-egalitarian, anti-hierarchical, anti-individualist worldviews. Those in health promotion positions are slightly more to …

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a global health crisis with deleterious consequences that violates children’s safety worldwide. Exact rates of CSA prevalence vary, as most cases of CSA are not disclosed. Survivors delayed or nondisclosure impedes early interventions to alleviate documented adverse effects of CSA. CSA survivors have an increased risk of suicidal ideation. This phenomenological study involved examining the lived experiences of adult fathers after their children experienced CSA. Finkelhor and Browne’s traumagenic dynamics framework guided this study. Traumagenic dynamics influence children’s cognitive and emotional functioning and distort their self-esteem, identity, worldview, and affective capacities. Stigmatization has been associated …

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of myopia on regional visual field (VF) loss and progression in glaucoma.

METHODS: We included 112,633 24-2 VFs; longitudinal analyses comprised patients with at least 5 reliable VFs over 4 years. The degree of myopia was measured by spherical equivalent (SE) extracted from VF testing. Linear and Cox regressions determined the impact of myopia on regional VF loss and progression, respectively. We calculated three VF progression outcomes: (1) mean deviation (MD) progression: MD slope < 0; (2) total deviation (TD) pointwise progression: at least 3 TD locations with TD slope ≤-1 decibels (dB)/year; (3) MD fast progression: MD slope ≤-1 dB/year (P value < 0.05). Longitudinal analyses were conducted for all subjects and with exclusion of patients with high myopia (SE ≤-6.00 diopters [D]).
