Introduction: Trainees experiencing burnout, depression, or career dissatisfaction challenge educators and may have patient care consequences. Grit, defined as the “perseverance and passion for long-term goals,” buffers against hopelessness and quantifies an aspect of personality shown to predict fewer career changes. Higher grit has been associated with positive outcomes in physicians, including lower burnout rates. Our objective was to determine the correlation between emergency medicine (EM) resident Short Grit Scale (Grit-S) scores and components of well-being: burnout, a positive depression screen, and career satisfaction.

Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter trial involving ten urban/suburban EM residencies. The subjects …

Realization of large effective phonon magnetic moment in monolayer MoS2 has established an important route for exploring intriguing magnetic phenomena in a nonmagnetic material. The sizable coupling between the orbital transition and the circularly polarized phonon results in the large effective phonon magnetic moment. In this work, using magneto-Raman spectroscopy, we investigate substitutional doping of magnetic atoms as a tuning knob of the electronic and phononic properties of MoS2. We show that Fe-doping polarizes the spin of the conduction bands and introduces a localized Fe band underneath the conduction band. As a result, an additional orbital transition between the Mo …

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most prevalent internal modification in eukaryotic messenger RNA (mRNA) and plays a vital role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. In recent years, m6A has emerged as a pivotal epitranscriptomic signal involved in neural development, synaptic remodeling, and the molecular pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms underlying the deposition, removal, and recognition of m6A by dedicated methyltransferases, demethylases, and RNA-binding proteins. Ceuta and Melilla are often the epicenter of political debates in Spain and Morocco, in part owing to their Spanish sovereignty being disputed by Morocco. This issue is further complicated by Morocco’s paradoxical role in migration to these cities, serving as a sojourn for migrants while simultaneously policing the borders that it protests. In this study, I use critical discourse analysis and media framing to analyze 200 Moroccan and Spanish news articles to highlight how migrant identities and borders are co-constructed. Findings show that borders are discursively constructed differently across countries and publication languages while also tied to migration, juxtaposing …

RATIONALE: Alkyl nitrites ("poppers") are recreational substances known for their vasodilatory and euphoric effects. Increasing evidence links them to a vision-threatening condition termed poppers maculopathy, characterized by foveal yellow spots and outer retinal changes on optical coherence tomography. While most reports describe acute exposure, little is known about long-term consequences. This case describes one of the longest documented durations of chronic poppers use, combined with a literature review to contextualize the clinical spectrum.

Excess turnover of personnel threatens organizational viability and long-term success. Human resource leaders need to develop strategies to increase employee retention. Grounded in Herzberg’s two-factor and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theories, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore and identify successful employee retention strategies employed by human resource leaders to mitigate employee turnover. Data were collected from human resources managers using semistructured interviews and public data from companies’ websites. Through thematic analysis, four themes emerged: (a) job assignment, (b) employee feedback, (c) employee benefits, and (d) training, growth, and development. Rett syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder that significantly impairs bipedal postural control and walking ability. This study quantifies the gait characteristics of 22 females with Rett syndrome (divided into 3 age groups) and compares them with age-matched neurotypical females. Bilateral sagittal plane joint angles of the hip, knee, and ankle were analyzed. Measures included joint range of motion, stride time, peak angular velocity, angle-angle diagrams, phase portrait areas, and asymmetries. Results revealed reduced joint range of motion and angular velocity in individuals with Rett syndrome, as well as greater asymmetries in gait parameters reflecting disruptions in bilateral coordination. Financial inducements such as free bets are frequently-used gambling marketing offers which temporarily improve a gambler’s usual pattern of risk and potential return. Previous research has shown that there are up to 15 distinct types of financial inducements in common use, and that gamblers frequently misunderstand inducements’ play-through requirements and other complex terms and conditions. The Australian government has therefore recently banned play-through requirements for inducements shown to new customers, and the Great British regulator the Gambling Commission has recently announced a maximum play-through requirement of 10 times. Myosin-X (MYO10) is an actin-based motor protein involved in cytoskeletal dynamics, membrane interactions, and integrin-mediated adhesion. To investigate MYO10's cellular roles, we generated MYO10 knockdown (MYO10KD) HeLa and COS7 cell lines using lentiviral shRNA. Compared to wild-type cells, both MYO10KD lines showed reduced proliferation and impaired cell migration in wound assays. Additionally, there were fewer edge filopodia in HeLa cells. Furthermore, MYO10KD cells demonstrated increased spreading on laminin-coated substrates, suggesting altered integrin activation and cytoskeletal linkage. Our results reinforce MYO10’s importance in cell proliferation, adhesion, and migration. These MYO10KD lines provide an accessible cell culture model for future study of …

Deep-space missions, such as those planned for the cis-lunar space and Mars, pose unique challenges to astronaut health due to prolonged microgravity (MG) exposure and low-dose chronic irradiation (CIR). Understanding the impact of these stressors on secondary lymphoid tissues, such as the spleen and intestine, is crucial for ensuring crewmembers' well-being, given the impracticality of conducting this research with human samples. The main focus of this research is the palynological investigation of Rhaponticoides Vaill. species naturally occurring in Türkiye. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to examine the pollen morphology of nine Rhaponticoides species in detail. Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was also conducted to identify closely related species and distinguish the investigated taxa based on palynological traits. The study found that the pollen grains were tricolporate, isopolar, monad, and radially symmetric, with an oblate-spheroidal shape as indicated by the polar/equatorial (P/E) ratio. Pinanga arinasae is an endangered species endemic to Bali, Indonesia. Our study aims to characterize its chloroplast genome, compare it with other chloroplast genomes, including its phylogenetic position within the Arecoideae subfamily, and identify potential molecular markers. P. arinasae chloroplast genomes characterization involves Illumina-based sequencing, de novo genome assembly, gene annotation, amino acid frequency, codon usage pattern analysis, and Simple Sequence Marker (SSR) identification. Comparative analysis include phylogenetic tree reconstruction, comparison of amino acid frequency, codon usage pattern, SSR number, inverted repeat junction arrangement, genome length, GC content, and gene number. Background. – This study aims to evaluate the impact of obesity on post–liver transplant outcomes stratified by low- and high-performance status. Methods. – Patients undergoing liver transplantation between 2006 and 2023 were identified in the United Network for Organ Sharing data set. Patients with severe obesity body mass index ([BMI] ≥40 kg/m2) and super obesity (BMI >50 kg/m2) were compared with those with lower BMI on perioperative and long-term outcomes stratified by preoperative performance status. Introduction: Ischemia-induced retinopathies, such as retinopathy of prematurity and proliferative diabetic retinopathy, are major causes of vision loss. Both pathological neovascularization and neuronal damage contribute to vision impairment in these conditions, yet current therapies primarily target neovascularization and may further compromise neuronal health.

Objectives: Cyclic AMP (cAMP) is a widely recognized second messenger regulating diverse physiological and pathological processes. Exchange protein directly activated by cAMP (Epac) is a recently identified effector of cAMP signaling. This article compares two systems of labour market governance: regulation by means of employment standards, and norms that are established in collective bargaining. A comparative framework draws nine criteria, spanning procedural and substantive dimensions, and emphasises the degree of integration between the systems, or “coupling.” The study uses Israel’s response to the COVID-19 crisis as a case study, drawing on a unique dataset of all regulatory provisions and collective agreements concluded from March 2020 to December 2021, supplemented by interviews with key actors. This case series describes three female patients between the ages of 51 and 66 who presented with epigastric pain with or without nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Each had minimal medical and surgical histories, most notably one with a congenital malrotation and prior cholecystectomy, one with an enlarged right lobe of the liver, and one with a prior hiatal hernia repair. CT results suggested a hernia through the foramen of Winslow (FWH) in each case, which was confirmed intraoperatively. BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) significantly improves quality of life, yet current diagnostic practices rely on subjective behavioural assessments. While machine learning models using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) show promise for objective diagnosis, existing approaches have critical limitations. High-accuracy models often neglect interpretability, increasing clinical distrust, while interpretable approaches frequently suffer from low accuracy and lack neuroscientific validation of identified biomarkers. Furthermore, no studies have systematically benchmarked which interpretability methods are most effective for fMRI data, hindering the translation of Artificial intelligence (AI) findings into clinical practice.

Early in his new book, CENTURY columnist Phil Christman recounts a formative, almost mystical episode from a college Bible study. Amped on adolescent anxiety and tormented by the sort of shame in which Christian fundamentalism sadistically specializes, a young Phil gathers with some classmates to read the Sermon on the Mount. This, his younger self muses, is not something a guy with a girlfriend does on a Saturday afternoon. “I am a loser,” he realizes. “We are the losers.”

The global reliance on fossil fuels and natural gas has largely dominated the energy production field, but due to finite resource depletion and escalating greenhouse gas emissions, the immediate exploration of sustainable energy alternatives to mitigate climate change and ensure resource security has been a major concern. There has been extensive research into other more renewable methods of energy production, such as wind and hydropower. Two Essays On Health And Health Behavior In China, Jiamin Tan

This thesis consists of two empirical studies on elderly mental health and on health behaviors. The first study investigates the long-term impact of childhood hunger on mental health in later life, using data from two nationally representative surveys in China. The study finds that childhood hunger exposure significantly increases the risks of depression and anxiety in later life. These effects are most pronounced among individuals exposed after age 5, suggesting that autobiographical memory formation plays an important role beyond socioeconomic and health pathways. The findings further indicate these impacts can be mitigated through economic interventions, such as welfare programs, and …
