The Mystical Kitchen: Feminist Magic And Alchemical Transformation In The Work Of Lenora Carrington, Theresa Burwell

Theses

This thesis analyzes the inherent feminism in alchemical and magical symbolism, particularly in representations of kitchens in the art and writing of Leonora Carrington. The kitchen has historically been viewed as a gendered space for domestic work. By subverting cultural and religious conventions, Carrington’s kitchen becomes a site for transmutation and feminine ritual. Using feminist discourse, formal art historical analysis, and the history of alchemical symbolism, this thesis asserts that Carrington’s imagery transforms the kitchen from an oppressive domestic space to a mystical laboratory of feminine power. This research demonstrates how Afrofuturistic art, combined with nature and scent, enables powerful methods to transform African Diaspora perceptions and support holistic wellness through sensory-emotional engagement. The project introduces The Next Narrative: An Immersive Journey Through Black Time as a multisensory immersive exhibition that combines Afrofuturistic aesthetics with Harlem Renaissance cultural elements. The exhibition presents salons as a sequence that allows visitors to experience time through visual, sonic, and atmospheric transitions. The three senses of touch, scent, and sound operate as fundamental tools for grounding and transformation, which disable analytical thinking while using bodily experiences to perform decolonial memory work. …

Background Transfusion practices among intensive care unit (ICU) patients with sepsis vary widely. While restrictive hemoglobin thresholds for red blood cell (RBC) transfusion are well studied, the indications and thresholds for platelet and plasma transfusions remain uncertain.

Methods We performed a sepsis-specific sub-analysis of the International Point Prevalence Study of Intensive Care Unit Transfusion Practices, a prospective, multicenter, observational study capturing all adult ICU admissions during four pre-scheduled weeks between March 2019 and October 2022. Patients admitted with sepsis or septic shock, or who developed sepsis during their ICU stay, were included. We recorded demographics, daily laboratory values, and transfusion …

Description of new and revised taxa originating from non-domestic animal species continues to be pursued. The majority are bacteria isolated from the alimentary system of a variety of healthy wildlife, adding to our understanding of microbial flora present in the normal state. A few new and revised taxa are associated with disease, including a novel Erysipelothrix species associated with sepsis in albatross and a revised species, Allocoenonia anatina comb. nov., associated with Riemerella anatipestifera-like disease in ducks and geese. Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy, comprehensiveness, and readability of responses generated by ChatGPT 4.0 to 30 common patient questions about the Bernese periacetabular osteotomy (PAO).

Methods: Two fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons specializing in hip preservation selected thirty questions from a prior study identifying common PAO questions on social media. Each question was entered into ChatGPT 4.0, and the surgeons independently graded responses. Responses were evaluated using an established grading system. Accuracy and comprehensiveness were assessed based on the concordance of response content with current literature. Readability was analysed by calculating the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level and Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease. …

The Effects Of Carbon Disclosure And Carbon Performance On Agency Cost: International Evidence, Md Abubakar Siddique, Ahmed Abdel-Maksoud, Afzalur Rashid, Sitara Karim

This study examines the relationships among carbon disclosure (CD), carbon performance (CP), and agency cost (AC) using a global sample across major industries. Employing Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) via WarpPLS, we find that increased carbon disclosure reduces agency cost, while improved carbon performance may increase it, likely due to the capital-intensive nature of environmental investments. Carbon disclosure is shown to mediate the relationship between carbon performance and agency cost. Firms in countries with emissions trading schemes and higher environmental performance indices tend to perform better in carbon management. Recent and abrupt deviations in U.S. climate and energy policies are shifting the United States away from a more sustainable future toward greater fossil-fuel use that will accelerate global warming. These new priorities go against the wishes of the American people as measured by many nationally representative surveys, and they ignore the scientific consensus regarding climate change and its deleterious consequences. This new agenda will harm the physical and mental health of Americans, imperil the U.S. economy, weaken American leadership in science, and increase geopolitical instability. Outcomes and Impact Quarterly

In June 2025, Utah State University (USU) Extension hosted a two-day event, Pathways to Higher Education. The event introduced 31 rural youth from Grand County and San Juan County to USU educational opportunities and careers through immersive tours and workshops, visiting the Price, Moab, and Logan campuses. Participants reported increased college confidence, financial aid awareness, and career interest. Evaluation showed strong engagement, improved participants’ understanding of higher education pathways, and increased confidence in preparing for postsecondary education.

Evaluating Online Naloxone Trainings Targeting Rural And Tribal Communities, Cara Murray, Lily Ward, Tim Keady, Cris Meier

Outcomes and Impact Quarterly

Drug overdose deaths have been a persistent problem within tribal and rural Utah communities. During the COVID-19 epidemic, the need to pivot to online programming was imperative to provide important lifesaving training on how to administer Naloxone. In response, Utah State University Extension created an online Naloxone training. Evaluation results found increases in knowledge and attitude at the end of the training. Results suggest that online Naloxone training can be an effective way to reach rural and tribal community members.

In this paper, I investigate the relationship between the total number of international organizations a state is involved in and its military expenditures as a percentage of GDP. Utilizing both qualitative and quantitative analysis, I find support for my hypothesis that the more international organizations a state is a member of, the less a state will expend on its military. Qualitatively, I focus on the three main theories of international relations (realism, liberalism, and constructivism) to construct a theoretical foundation for my paper. Environmental Receipts: The Ecological Footprint Of Multilateral Development Banks, Mike Wigdor

This paper assesses whether membership in multilateral development banks (MDBs) is associated with lower ecological footprints. Drawing on country-year data from the 2025 Quality of Government (QoG) Basic Dataset and the Correlates of War (CoW) IGO Dataset, I analyze 1,714 observations from 1970–2008. Ecological footprint (global hectares per capita) is used as the dependent variable, while the central explanatory variable is the total number of MDB memberships annually. I utilize an OLS regression model controlling for logged GDP per capita, regime type, oil production value, urbanization, and economic globalization.
