This Article offers novel observation and critical intervention in the challenge to state laws which have been adopted, allegedly, to prevent the teaching of critical race theory

(CRT) in public schools. Against the trend of recent scholarship that understands these laws as curricular censorship of topical subjects and seeks to contest their validity on those grounds, this Article more accurately identifies them as pedagogical censorship: Limits on teaching methods, which raise different, potentially more dispositive questions about the states’ educational decision-making authority—questions that the U.S. Supreme Court has long sought to avoid. Ocean acidification significantly affects marine calcifiers like oysters, warranting the study of molecular mechanisms like DNA methylation that contribute to adaptive plasticity in response to environmental change. However, a consensus has not been reached on the extent to which methylation modules gene expression, and in turn plasticity, in marine invertebrates. In this study, we investigated the impact of pCO₂ on gene expression and DNA methylation in the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica. After a 30-day exposure to control (572 ppm) or elevated pCO₂ (2827 ppm), whole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) and RNA-seq data were generated from adult female gonad tissue …

Research has shown a strong connection between parental substance use disorders (SUDs) and the likelihood of children engaging in similar behaviors. Existing literature uses data collected before the COVID-19 pandemic, whereas this study utilizes data collected during the pandemic. It is essential to examine whether the relationship between parental substance use and children’s substance use increased, as children spent more time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Charting plays a vital role in nursing practice, yet many new graduate nurses find it challenging to master as they learn to document accurately while managing multiple patient care responsibilities. The integration of electronic health record (EHR) training into nursing curricula aims to bridge the gap between education and clinical practice. This study explores whether the use of an academic EHR named "EHR Go" helps prepare nursing students for documenting in real-world clinical settings. Large Language Models (LLMs) struggle on factual, relation-heavy questions without structured external knowledge. This thesis implements a standards-based pipeline that connects LLMs to Resource Description Framework (RDF) knowledge graphs through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The system comprises an MCP tool that executes SPARQL against approved endpoints, an Natural Language (NL) to SPARQL step in which the LLM (ChatGPT) generates the SPARQL query using prompt-based templates, followed by a generation stage conditioned on the retrieved graph facts. Final experiments focus on the Rhea knowledge graph. We evaluated the same base model with and without MCP on a 50-question benchmark spanning …

There are over 771,000 people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in the United States, with job loss and natural disasters threatening to increase this number. This project reviews two possible means of providing affordable housing for PEH: using existing buildings, and Additive Manufacturing or 3D printed housing. Twenty cities in fourteen American states were reviewed for current housing unit vacancy, future planned building-to-housing conversions, and requirements to provide Additive Manufactured housing. The number of PEH found in each city was compared to the number of vacant housing units and planned building conversions. Additive manufacturing was studied through its cost and time efficiency, …

Financial stress does not just affect people’s finances; it can change the way individuals behave. This project asks whether short-term financial difficulty damages worker performance or if alleviating it improves focus and accuracy. Using data from a field experiment in rural India, this study examine how labor payment timing variability is related to workers' productivity and error rates. The study randomized payment dates across a sample of employees, so that employees paid early can be compared to employees paid on standard or later dates. It investigates whether subsidy of payments relieves stress and enhances task performance by minimizing stress, enhancing …

The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and mitigation efforts on health and social outcomes for people with HIV at the individual, social, and structural levels of the Social Ecological Model. The International Nursing Network for HIV collected data for a cross-sectional survey of people with HIV in Botswana, Canada, Colombia, Hong Kong, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, and the United States from August 2021 through June 2023. Among 1,400 participants, 47.5% experienced decreased quality of life, 40.9% experienced increased anxiety, 33.0% had reduced connection with friends, and 38.8% had …

Part I of this Article analyzes third country agreements and refugee transfer practices of the United States and the European Union. Part II demonstrates that, under international law, all countries are obligated to protect refugees and are prohibited from directly or indirectly sending them to a country where there is a substantial basis for believing that their life or freedom would be threatened. Part II will likewise show that the notion of "safe third country" transfer agreements and practices is often a fallacy, an oxymoron. In Dirks v. SEC and Salman v. United States, the Supreme Court held that, under Section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act, tipper/tippee liability arises only if the tippee confers a benefit on the tipper. The ostensible justification for this rule arises from a mistaken premise. The error is rooted in the so-called classical theory of insider trading. When a corporate insider trades on material, nonpublic corporate information, the Supreme Court has held that the insider faces liability because that person profited from the trade. Cell phones are free speech machines. They have been particularly important in recent social movements because they allow an individual to record protests or police activity and share such experiences with a world-wide audience on social media. In these circumstances, the Fourth Amendment’s protection of an individual’s unfettered property right to possess their cell phone overlaps with their First Amendment right to engage in these core free speech activities. A “moral turn” in jurisprudence—in which scholars and judges are making overt appeals to the classical legal tradition and its natural law principles—has been gaining steam. Originalism, with its focus on posited law, is increasingly viewed as a morally empty jurisprudence. But positive law is a necessary, though not sufficient, component of the classical tradition, providing the means for a society to advance the common good. With that in mind, this Article explains how certain core originalist theses provide a deeper understanding of the mechanics of how positive law fulfills its moral role. Latin American Countries (“LAMC”) maintain a distinct set of diplomatic practices that differ from those commonly observed around the world. One observable distinction is the doctrine of diplomatic asylum, which allows political refugees of other countries to seek asylum in foreign embassies. The concept of diplomatic asylum is seldom recognized outside of the Latin American region, leaving LAMC as one of the few that recognize and use this locally recognized right. Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

This study aimed to develop a measurement tool that assesses barriers faced by minority young adults using a bottom-up scale development approach. In Phase I, 27 psychometric items were identified through deductive content analysis from focus groups with minority young adults (n = 16). In Phase 2, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with 225 participants revealed the scale to a 5-factor model consisting of 18 items with strong model fit, validated by two domain experts. The Perceived Youth Barriers Scale (PYBS) effectively captures underprivileged young adults’ perceptions of barriers that will contribute to improved advocacy, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) in …

Renal cell carcinoma accounts for 90% of malignant renal tumors, with common metastases to the lungs, bones, and brain. Head and neck metastases are uncommon, and the parotid gland is an exceedingly rare site (0.5%). Recurrent metastasis to bilateral parotid glands has been reported in the literature, but recurrent metastasis to the ipsilateral gland has not. This is a case about a 69-year-old female who presented to our clinic with the chief complaint of a slowly enlarging left neck mass.
