Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The current approaches for crash frequency and severity prediction in the Highway Safety Manual (HSM) do not employ vehicle mix information. In this research effort, we build advanced alternatives to HSM methods while incorporating vehicle mix information. Two model systems—(a) multivariate Poisson-lognormal model and (b) negative binomial-ordered probit fractional split model—are estimated by incorporating vehicle mix variables. The developed model systems can also capture the influence of observed and unobserved heterogeneity of different independent variables including vehicle mix variables. Role Of Social Comparison Orientation On Financial Management Behavior In A Developing Nation: Examining The Mediating Role Of Financial Self-Efficacy And The Moderating Effect Of Financial Socialization, Afm Jalal Ahamed, Yam B. Limbu

Purpose – This study aims to explore the impact of social comparison orientation (SCO) on financial management behavior (FMB) in a developing country with a collectivist culture. It examines how SCO is related to FMB directly and through financial self-efficacy (FSE) and how financial socialization (FS) moderates the SCO–FMB relationship. Design/methodology/approach – Data was collected from 301 adults in Dhaka, Bangladesh, using self-administered survey questionnaires. Mediation and moderation analyses were performed using Smart PLS software. Findings – The results indicate that SCO was positively associated with FMB. FSE mediates this relationship, enhancing SCO’s positive impact on FMB. Additionally, FS moderates …

Utilizing the job demands resource (JDR) model, as a basis to learn and better understand the workplace experience of employees in live entertainment, we developed a model specific to sport. Through a three-stage process, the scale was measured and validated with collegiate sport employees. The first stage included subject matter experts (n = 69) openly listing job demands and resources in their workplace, then the second stage included two samples of employed graduate students (sample one: n = 101; sample two: n = 112), and finally phase three included two samples of collegiate sport employees (sample one: n = 249; …

All discharged service members are required to attend a Transition Assistance Program (TAP). Service members who are found medically unfit to serve must attend TAP prior to being discharged by a Medical Evaluation Board (MEB). This qualitative research study examined the experiences of disabled veterans who were medically discharged with only the general transition program. The problem that was addressed was the lack of information about the experiences of medically discharged service members and the unique challenges that disabled veterans continue to experience because of it. Approximately 70% of all new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections are among populations of sexual and gender minorities (SGM) and are primarily attributable to sexual contact. Currently, only 26% of the U.S. population who would benefit from HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are prescribed this effective biomedical HIV prevention strategy. Biomedical prevention strategies for bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STI) like doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP), are a vital component to the successes of ending the HIV epidemic given the well-known association between STIs and risk for HIV infection. This study examines how digital creators navigate the precarious Chinese digital creative industries (DCCIs), shaped by multi-channel networks (MCNs), platform logic, and intensifying state intervention. Drawing on interviews with 34 creators, I identified three challenges facing Chinese creators: (1) dual exploitation by volatile platforms and capricious MCN management; (2) erosion of creative autonomy under MCN gatekeeping and state oversight; (3) involuntarily being enlisted as propaganda artisans. Creators, especially those affiliated with MCNs, are increasingly positioned as state labor with governed creativity: cultural workers whose output is shaped, constrained, and redirected by the layered imperatives of state mandates, platform governance, and …

Purpose of Review: This review explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and ectopic fat imaging. It aims to evaluate how AI may be used to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment. It addresses key questions regarding AI’s capabilities in risk prediction, segmentation, and integration with large volume data for CVD risk assessment. Recent Findings: Recent studies demonstrate that AI, powered by deep learning models, significantly improve VAT and ectopic fat segmentation. The COVID-19 pandemic-driven lockdowns offer a unique opportunity to examine how reductions in anthropogenic emissions impacted atmospheric aerosol composition in urban environments. This study investigates the day-night variability of size-resolved water-soluble ions in ambient particulate matter (PM) collected in Metro Manila before (November 2019–February 2020) and after (November 2020–February 2021) lockdown implementation. Using tandem Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactors (MOUDIs), aerosol samples were collected during daytime (06:00–18:00) and nighttime (18:00–06:00) periods and analyzed for key ionic species (sulfate, ammonium, nitrate, oxalate, sodium, chloride, calcium, and magnesium) via ion chromatography. Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly transforming many professional activities, and the electric grid has already started to see adverse impacts from its use, such as the burgeoning demand for electricity from data centers. This Article acknowledges these impacts, but also demonstrates that AI can be put to beneficial use on the grid. It proposes and describes a specific use of AI: assisting citizen intervenors in public utility commission (PUC) proceedings, who currently face barriers to participation due to the technical complexity and confidentiality imposed by monopoly utilities. The Pinkerton and accomplice-liability doctrines are two of the most maligned doctrines in criminal law. Anyone deemed an “accomplice” to a crime can be convicted of that crime as if they had perpetrated the wrongdoing themselves; similarly, Pinkerton liability, a form of conspiracy liability, permits the government to hold someone accountable for the substantive crimes of another so long as those crimes were “in furtherance of the conspiracy,” “within the scope of the unlawful project,” and reasonably foreseeable “as a necessary or natural consequence of the unlawful agreement.” Scholars, activists, and reformers have criticized the doctrines on both constitutional and …

The United States saw in the 2016 presidential election how Russia used social media to spread disinformation. Russia engaged in similar conduct during the lead-up to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and, most recently, during the days before the 2024 U.S. presidential election. An interesting development, however, has been the U.S. government’s issuance of public statements countering these disinformation attempts. This Article argues that such public statements are quite helpful, both in countering the disinformation and allowing social media companies to legitimately enforce their content. All signs in Pulsifer point to considerable discretion for courts, all while operating within the confines of statutory text. For one, the opinion indicates that courts can override the text of a statute if the context so demands. The Court’s rejection of lenity also confirms this trend in two ways. It highlights the Court’s inconsistent approach when it comes to requiring the legislature to speak clearly. It also confirms that the threshold of ambiguity required to trigger lenity continues to be a high one, thus allowing judges to selectively apply the canon, even when a split in the Court demonstrates …
