Schistosomiasis is caused by parasitic flatworms (Schistosoma). The disease in humans can be caused by seven different species of Schistosoma: S. mansoni, S. japonicum, S. haematobium, S. malayensis, S. mekongi, S. guineensis and S. intercalatum, as well as by hybrids between species, including livestock schistosome species. People are infected when exposed to infested water and the parasite larvae penetrate the skin. Poor and rural communities are typically the most affected, and the general population who lives in affected areas and is exposed to contaminated water is at risk. Background: Outdoor air pollution is a suspected risk factor for childhood cancer, and there is some evidence that greenness may reduce cancer risk. We examined relationships between prenatal exposure to ambient fine particle air pollution [particulate matter < 2.5 µg/m3 (PM2.5)], greenness, and childhood cancer risk in Minnesota.

Methods: Cases included individuals born in the state of Minnesota and reported to the Minnesota Cancer Reporting System between 2000 and 2014 (n = 1272, ages 0-14 years at diagnosis) and birth year-matched cancer-free controls (n = 5245). Measuring synaptic efficacy and defining the rules for induction of synaptic plasticity at identified connections in the mammalian brain is essential for understanding how synapses contribute to learning and memory. This requires new approaches to selectively evoke presynaptic activity and measure postsynaptic responses with high spatiotemporal resolution and high sensitivity over long periods in vivo. Here we develop an all-optical approach to probe synaptic plasticity at identified cerebellar synapses in awake, behaving mice. Polar ring galaxies (PRGs) are peculiar galaxies that show a ring of stars, gas, and dust oriented roughly over the poles of the central ‘host’ galaxy (i.e. roughly orthogonal to the disc of the host galaxy). The formation models for these rings involve mergers or tidal interactions of the host galaxy with another galaxy. Although the identified PRGs look different from each other, they all have a ring that is not in the same plane as the disc of the host galaxy. We present optical integral-field spectroscopic data of ten nearby (0.02 ≤ z ≤ 0.05) Seyfert 1 galaxies taken with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager. We map the spatially resolved kinematics of the [O iii] gas and stars, and investigate the alignments between their global kinematic position angles (PAs). Large-scale gas motions are primarily dominated by rotation and are kinematically aligned with the stars (ΔPA ≤ 30°). However, eight galaxies exhibit nonrotational kinematic signatures (e.g., kinematic twists, possible outflows) in their ionized gas velocity fields near the nucleus. JWST has revealed a large population of compact, red objects at z > 4 known as Little Red Dots (LRDs). We analyze the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 88 LRDs from the JWST PRIMER survey with complete photometric coverage from 1 to 18 μm using NIRCam and MIRI imaging, representing the most extensive SED analysis on a large LRD sample with long-wavelength MIRI data. We examine SED models in which either galaxy or active galactic nucleus (AGN) emission dominates the rest-frame UV or optical continuum, extracting physical properties to explore each scenario’s implications. I conducted this quality improvement (QI) initiative with the aim of reducing inpatient falls within an adult medical-surgical unit through the implementation of a Fall Champions model supported by structured education and decentralized nursing leadership. Inpatient falls pose a persistent threat to patient safety, often leading to injury, prolonged hospitalization, and increased healthcare costs. We present a concise, step-by-step reduction of a symmetric resistor network to its equivalent resistance 𝑅₁₂, emphasizing visual reasoning over algebraic brute force. By redrawing the circuit to expose symmetry, we identify equipotential node pairs joined by ideal conductors; the “bottom” bridging resistor is shown to carry zero current and is removed from consideration. The remaining topology reduces by two repeated series combinations, where each left/right pair of equal resistors collapses to 2R. Background: Adolescent dating violence (DV) perpetration is a significant public health issue affecting millions of adolescents in the United States. Adverse childhood experiences such as household dysfunction (HD) have been exhibited to be risk factors for DV perpetration during adolescence and adulthood. Furthermore, the literature is scant regarding how positive parent-child relationships can mitigate these risk factors and decrease HD-related consequences among sixth-grade adolescents. BACKGROUND: In extremely preterm newborns, intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) greatly influences neurodevelopmental outcomes. Preterm newborns who later develop IVH might have altered cerebral blood flow (CBF) as measured by resistive index (RI) on Doppler ultrasound. Knowledge regarding RI in extremely premature infants remains limited.

OBJECTIVE: This pilot prospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the association between early cerebral RI (within the first 36 h of life) and the occurrence of IVH in preterm infants born at <  29 weeks’ gestation.

Although halal tourism has witnessed significant global expansion, there remains a notable gap in the literature concerning the development of halal-compliant wellness products and services in destinations outside the Muslim world. Employing a qualitative methodology, in-depth interviews were undertaken with 40 Thai Muslim participants who travelled to non-Muslim countries between 2022 and 2023.
