The Antimicrobial And Antibiofilm Effects Of Marine-Derived Crude Extracts, Monica Murphy
The Antimicrobial And Antibiofilm Effects Of Marine-Derived Crude Extracts, Monica Murphy
Theses
Marine-derived compounds are promising candidates in the search for new antimicrobials. This thesis explores their potential against a suite of clinically relevant bacterial strains. Saltwater environments were screened for antimicrobial compounds, leading to the identification of two lead bacterial strains, Bacillus subtilis_MTUA2 and Bacillus velezensis_MTUC2. Cell-free supernatant (CFS) of these strains significantly reduced the growth of MRSA and clinical S. aureus isolates (50%), inhibited biofilms by 99% and 90%, respectively, and reduced E. coli biofilms by 90%. To expand the scope of bioactive marine sources, crude extracts from two seaweeds, Codium fragile and Fucus vesiculosus, obtained using methanol and water …
A Framework For Adaptive Ride-Sharing And Management Of Electric Vehicles, Avinash Nagarajan
A Framework For Adaptive Ride-Sharing And Management Of Electric Vehicles, Avinash Nagarajan
Theses
Europe aims for carbon neutrality by 2050, with transportation currently amount- ing 20% of its total emissions. Motivated by the sustained mass transition to Autonomous Electric Vehicles (AEVs) and by the distributed energy generation and storage of local Smart Energy Communities (SECs), this thesis presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a carbon-neutral, community-based, scalable ride-sharing service. Its models formalise the partition of an AEVs fleet over the SECs of a city, as well as the allocation of trip petitions (TPs) to AEVs, their routing and charging scheduling over a simulated time horizon. These models integrate energy generation, allocation and …

'It Doesn't Matter Where You Come From, It Matters Where You Go': Peninsula Dental Students' Career Decisions And Intentions, Ian Mills, Laura Clarry, Amy Rathbone, Marie Bryce, Sally Hanks
Peninsula Dental School
Introduction The south west of England is widely recognised as a 'dental desert' with limited access to NHS (National Health Service) dentistry. One of the major contributing factors to NHS capacity is recruitment and retention of dentists in the region, particularly in rural and coastal areas. Peninsula Dental School was established in 2006 to help address some of the workforce issues at that time, yet despite the success of the Dental School, many dental students still do not stay in the region following graduation.Aims This study aimed to understand factors that influence career intentions and decisions of present and past …

Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Soybean production is substantially affected by insect pests, necessitating the implementation of appropriate management strategies. Effective irrigation and fertilizer regimes have been found to affect pest populations in agroecosystems. However, their interactive effects on herbivore incidence are less understood. This study reports the abundance and diversity of insect pests, especially hemipteran, lepidopteran, and stink bug species complexes, encountered on soybeans throughout their vegetative and reproductive growth stages under varying irrigation and micronutrient treatments. First, we compared total and major insect pest population densities in irrigated and rainfed conditions. Afterwards, we evaluated how the frequency of insect pests on soybean was …

Analysis Of Transcripts And Cardiac Myosin-Binding Protein With Variants Of Uncertain Significance In Cardiomyocytes, Egas Manuel Guterres, Luis Manuel Guterres
Folia Medica Indonesiana
Mutations in the myosin-binding protein C (MYBPC3) gene, particularly variants of uncertain significance (VUS), are associated with cardiomyopathies. This systematic review aims to analyze the impact of VUS mutations in MYBPC3 on transcripts and proteins in cardiomyocytes. A comprehensive literature search across multiple databases (i.e., PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect) identified relevant studies focusing on the effects of these mutations on transcript and protein levels. Additionally, exclusion criteria were applied, and studies were excluded if they did not focus on cases analyzing transcript levels and MYBPC3 protein behavior in cardiomyocytes harboring VUS mutations. A total of fifteen studies published between …

Functional Foods For Older Adults: Comparing The Bioactive Properties Of Cheese To Identify Products That Promote Healthy Ageing, Aimee Plante
Theses
Functional foods for the elderly: comparing the bioactive properties of cheese to identify products that promote healthy ageing.
People are living longer, and a healthy ageing population is a key goal of our National Positive Ageing Strategy. One approach to support this initiative is to promote and develop functional foods that can support healthy ageing by reducing age-related conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer. Cheese particularly aged and fermented varieties like cheddar show great potential as a functional food with inherent and established health properties. It naturally contains bioactive peptides, vitamins, minerals, protein and possible cultures that confer …
Uncovering The Efficacy Of Unlabelled Data In Anomaly Detection, Andrew Shields
Uncovering The Efficacy Of Unlabelled Data In Anomaly Detection, Andrew Shields
Theses
Anomaly detection is an important area of research within data mining and has applications in many domains, including cybersecurity, finance, and healthcare. Conventional methods depend on labelled training data and assume an even class distribution, restricting their 'real-world' application, where rare anomalies and unlabelled data are the norm. This research addresses these limitations by investigating how unlabelled data can support anomaly detection in imbalanced, data-scarce, complex environments. It addresses three research questions: how to integrate unlabelled data into anomaly detection models, how to improve performance when labelled anomalies are scarce, and how graph-based methods capture complex relational anomalies. Three empirical …
Phenotypic, Genetic And Genomic Prediction Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Irish Cattle, Clodagh Ryan
Phenotypic, Genetic And Genomic Prediction Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Irish Cattle, Clodagh Ryan
Theses
Enteric methane is the largest source of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland, accounting for 63% of the sector’s total. Achieving the legally binding target of a 25% reduction in agricultural emissions by 2030 requires low-cost, scalable mitigation strategies. Genetic selection offers a cumulative and permanent solution, with potential to reduce emissions without compromising productivity. This thesis aimed to quantify the genetic variability of methane and carbon dioxide emissions in growing beef cattle, investigate their relationships with economically important traits, and evaluate the feasibility of incorporating a methane trait into the Irish national beef breeding objective. Emissions data were collected …
Addressing Training Challenges Of Generative Adversarial Networks For Biomedical Image Synthesis, Muhammad Muneeb Saad
Addressing Training Challenges Of Generative Adversarial Networks For Biomedical Image Synthesis, Muhammad Muneeb Saad
Theses
Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a pivotal role in computer-aided diagnosis. In image-based diagnosis, AI systems rely on biomedical images containing sensitive disease-oriented information. AI systems utilize machine learning models to automate this diagnosis. Machine learning models such as deep neural networks require large training datasets to enhance the diagnostic precision of these models. Models can underperform when they are trained on imbalanced datasets. Imbalance in datasets refers to the skewed numbers of images per image class. There is a need to enhance the training of these models via data augmentation. In the context of biomedical imagery, where acquiring large, balanced …
Generation And Detection Of Photo-Thermal And Photo-Acoustic Waves In Solids For Advanced Near-Field Ir Imaging, Yide Zhang
Theses
Atomic force microscopy-infrared (AFM-IR) spectroscopy has become an essential tool for nanoscale chemical imaging, offering spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limit of conventional infrared spectroscopy. A typical AFM-IR setup directs a pulsed IR laser onto the sample, precisely at the tip of an AFM cantilever, detecting local absorption indirectly as photothermal expansion via the tip. This combination of AFM’s high spatial resolution and infrared spectroscopy’s chemical specificity enables detailed studies of a wide range of materials, from polymers and biological tissues to nanomaterials. However, the factors influencing AFM-IR signal generation and spatial resolution-especially in complex and inhomogeneous samples-remain challenging to …
Advanced Nanophotonics For Gas Spectroscopy, Ajmal Thottoli
Advanced Nanophotonics For Gas Spectroscopy, Ajmal Thottoli
Theses
This thesis introduces advanced nanophotonic integrated devices aimed at improving miniaturized, cost-effective multi-gas detection and on-chip spectroscopic systems. Traditional spectroscopic techniques often require bulky optical components and multiple detectors, limiting their scalability for multi-gas sensing. The proposed integrated duplexers and triplexers enable switching between lasers to detect multiple gases using a single system. The work focuses on the design and optimization of broadband angled multimode interference duplexers, directional coupler-based duplexers, and cascaded directional coupler-based triplexers for combining spectroscopically relevant wavelengths in the near-infrared region. The target gases include ammonia, methane, and carbon dioxide. Through comprehensive simulations and experimental investigations, the …
Co-Designing Work-Integrated Learning At The Phd Level, Kristin Bracewell
Co-Designing Work-Integrated Learning At The Phd Level, Kristin Bracewell
Theses
This study seeks to understand work-integrated learning (WIL) at the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level in Ireland through an exploration of the opinions and experiences of the three primary stakeholders to WIL, students, academic supervisors, and potential host organisations or employers. The research utilises the experiences and opinions of the key stakeholders in WIL and centres the student voice. Empirical evidence is used to challenge the assumption that WIL is a wholly positive inclusion and, instead, consider both its benefits and drawbacks. The study takes a pragmatic approach and considers how WIL at the PhD level can be optimised to …

Interdisciplinary Narratives On Artificial Intelligence & Personnel Selection Systems, John Hunter, Melissa Intindola, Neil Boyd, Thiago Serra Azevedo Silva
Faculty Journal Articles
Artificial intelligence (AI) has quickly and persistently become a daily presence in our lives, and its omnipresence has eclipsed the speed with which scholars can fully assess its efficacy and pitfalls. AI’s ubiquity and the lack of a clear understanding of its implications for humanity has spurred scholars across disciplines to action, and scholars in the field of Human Resource Management (HR) have certainly joined the fray. As scholars with a variety of experience and scholarship across disciplines, we believe that the burgeoning conversation in the HR literature would significantly benefit from a greater presence of interdisciplinary knowledge.

Alternative And Traditional Schooling On Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Alaska Native Youth In The Lower Kuskokwim, Nathaniel Hebert
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Alaska Native youth experience disproportionately high rates of sexual risk, yet disaggregated data and school-contextual analyses remain limited. Understanding how school type (alternative vs. traditional) and individual factors influence sexual risk among Alaska Native youth is essential for informing targeted, culturally responsive health interventions and addressing ongoing health disparities. This quantitative study aimed to examine the association between three behaviors (condom use, multiple sexual partners, and substance use) by school type, controlling for gender, grade level, body mass index, and afterschool activity. Guided by the social-ecological model, this cross-sectional study provided new insights into the relationship between school type and …

Many students can memorize formulas but struggle to feel what a newton, joule, or volt means; they treat formulas as plug-and-chug templates rather than descriptions of relationships among physical quantities. This presentation introduces three types of learning activities: (1) text-free (“no-text”) problems, in which carefully designed visuals replace prose to convey relationships and constraints; (2) anti-problems, which begin with a mathematical expression and ask students to imagine a physical situation it could describe; and (3) lab games that turn routine measurement into purposeful play, emphasizing estimation, scaling, and unit sense. We provide ready-made, Brightspace-compatible assessments alongside low-tech implementation options. The …
