Global education monitoring
This policy brief aims to assist governments and development partners in creating and enhancing assessments of early childhood learning and development to inform the creation of evidence-based policies and practices. It draws on the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Centre's Monitoring learning in the early years: A review of early childhood assessments to support global monitoring.

An Ode-Based Analytical Approach To Rayleigh Flow Of Kelvin–Voigt Fluid, Kamille Garcia, Mahanthesh Basavarajappa
CODEE Journal
We present some results from a project carried out in the Under- graduate Research in Mathematics (MATH 4380) course at TAMIU. The main goal of this study is to demonstrate that analytical solutions for a system of partial differential equations (PDEs) can be obtained using methods typically taught in an undergraduate ordinary differential equations (ODE) course, such as power series, undetermined coefficients, and Laplace transforms. In this study, we provide semi-analytical solutions for Rayleigh flow type problem utilizing the Kelvin-Voigt fluid model, which describes the behavior of vis- coelastic materials by incorporating both elastic and viscous properties. Heat transfer analysis …

What Is The Point Of Free Speech?, Hrishikesh Joshi
What Is The Point Of Free Speech?, Hrishikesh Joshi
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
How might we understand the nature and importance of a right to freedom of speech? One way to go is to appeal to the rights of speakers and listeners. Individuals would then have a right against state interference in saying what they want to say. On the other hand, listeners have a right to listen to whom they please and thus also would have a right against state interference. By stopping certain things from being voiced or published, for instance, the state would also be violating individuals’ rights to hear or read these things if they so choose.

From Fort To Prison: The Production Of Iloilo City, Ram Paulo A. Anayan
From Fort To Prison: The Production Of Iloilo City, Ram Paulo A. Anayan
Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance
The foundation of colonial cities in the Philippines rests on violence. The Spanish policies of the reducción forced the natives to settle in pueblos where colonial power is ensured. The resistance of some natives brought about the divide between tagabayan (town dweller) and tagabundok (mountain dweller)—respective connotations of civilization and savagery (Lumbera and Lumbera, 36). This paper examines how this centripetal-centrifugal force of simultaneous identity-production and displacement is echoed in the metonymy of the fort on which the origins of Iloilo City stand. I navigate how this movement manifests in the consciousness of the city across historical periods represented by …

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd) In Zoulfa Katouh’S As Long As The Lemon Trees Grow, Mai Hazem El Gebali
English Language and Literature
This paper aims to analyze the representation of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Zoulfa Katouh’s novel, As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow (2022). Katouh, a Canadian-Syrian author who specializes in drug sciences, sets her debut novel against the backdrop of the war in Syria in the aftermath of the Arab Spring. The protagonist, Salama, a teenage girl pursuing an undergraduate degree in pharmacy, faces the harrowing realities of war and volunteers as a surgical assistant amidst the chaos of bombings and sniper attacks. As a result of the war, Salama tragically loses almost all her family members, and in …

Hagfish produce extraordinary slime as a defense mechanism, releasing exudate from glands that rapidly form a fibrous, soft, ultra-dilute, water-capturing network upon contact with seawater (up to 10 000 times its original volume). The gland thread cell (GTC) produces high-strength protein threads (filament diameter df = 1–3 µm) meticulously coiled into skeins (coil diameter Do ∼ 150 µm) that rapidly unravel upon deployment to reveal their hidden length (Lf = 15 cm), forming a cohesive fibrous slime network through interaction with mucin vesicles and seawater. To date, no engineered material is able to replicate the fiber …

Picture Perfect Stem: Ngss Science Standards Alignment Guide, Dr. Peter J. Kalenda Assistant Professor, Elementary Science & Math, School Of Education
School of Education
The Picture-Perfect STEM: Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Alignment Chart functions as a comprehensive reference tool that aligns all Picture-Perfect STEM lessons with the NGSS. The resource is organized by grade level (K-5) and disciplinary areas (Physical Science, Life Science, Earth Science, and Engineering), enabling teachers to quickly locate appropriate lessons for their specific instructional needs.
Each grade level section provides specific lesson alignments with NGSS standards appropriate for elementary students. The chart includes both individual grade-specific lessons and cross-grade applications that can be adapted for different developmental levels.

Trustworthy Navigation With Variational Policy In Deep Reinforcement Learning, Karla Bockrath, Liam Ernst, Rohaan Nadeem, Bryan Joseph Pedraza, Dimah Dera
Trustworthy Navigation With Variational Policy In Deep Reinforcement Learning, Karla Bockrath, Liam Ernst, Rohaan Nadeem, Bryan Joseph Pedraza, Dimah Dera
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Introduction: Developing a reliable and trustworthy navigation policy in deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for mobile robots is extremely challenging, particularly in real-world, highly dynamic environments. Particularly, exploring and navigating unknown environments without prior knowledge, while avoiding obstacles and collisions, is very cumbersome for mobile robots.
Methods: This study introduces a novel trustworthy navigation framework that utilizes variational policy learning to quantify uncertainty in the estimation of the robot’s action, localization, and map representation. Trust-Nav employs the Bayesian variational approximation of the posterior distribution over the policy-based neural network’s parameters. Policy-based and value-based learning are combined to guide the robot’s actions …

Social Media, Social Sensibilities, And The Employment Relationship, Matthew W. Finkin
Social Media, Social Sensibilities, And The Employment Relationship, Matthew W. Finkin
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
Employers have long made decisions based on the applicant’s or incumbent employee’s respectability. Those whose transgress the bounds could be excluded; e.g., those who publicly embrace the Ku Klux Klan.[] In other words, frank speech—speech “unconstrained by anything that might normally encourage one to be more circumspect,”[] speech revealing one’s “true feelings, however repellant to popular morality”[]—is not invariably a good thing.[]
When social media came into wide use, employers extended their monitoring of applicants and incumbents for the acceptability of that speech.[] There is nothing new in that.[] In the absence of a clear direction embodied in law …
