The Bear Essentials

Bear Essentials is an online newsletter published by the Student Activities Council of Des Moines Area Community College. The newsletter was established in early 2020 when DMACC closed its facilities due to the coronavirus pandemic. The newsletter covers topics such as upcoming virtual activities and events, college resources, and community service opportunities. When asked about the origins of the newsletter, Student Activities Advisor Erin Smith said, "We wanted students to know they were not alone, the entire DMACC Community was coming together to help support one another in any way possible."

Flawed Analysis Invalidates Claim Of A Strong Yellowstone Trophic Cascade After Wolf Reintroduction: A Comment On Ripple Et Al. (2025), Dan R. Macnulty, David Cooper, Michael Procko, T.J. Clark-Wolf

Ripple et al. (2025) recently argued that large carnivore recovery in Yellowstone National Park triggered one of the world’s strongest trophic cascades, citing a ∼1500 % increase in willow crown volume derived from plant height data. In this comment, we show that their conclusion is invalid due to fundamental methodological flaws. These include use of a tautological volume model, violations of key modeling assumptions, comparisons across unmatched plots, and the misapplication of equilibrium-based metrics in a non-equilibrium system. Additionally, Ripple et al. rely on selectively framed photographic evidence and omit critical drivers such as human hunting in their causal attribution. …

Cardinal Leo, a two-time UD graduate, canceled his visit because of the passing of his father. The University extends its deepest sympathy to Cardinal Leo and his family during this difficult time and holds them in its prayers.

An Integrated Pcb-Based Heating And Auto-Ranging Platform For Volatile Organic Compound (Voc) Detection Using Carbon Nanotube Based Sensors, Thomas Kalach

This thesis presents the development, characterization, and integration of a novel low-cost, high-dynamic-range sensor platform for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), leveraging the unique electrical properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) thin films. The platform introduces a fully integrated auto-ranging analog front-end circuit capable of real-time resistance measurement spanning over eight orders of magnitude ranging from tens of ohms to hundreds of megaohms, without compromising signal resolution or precision. This was achieved through a digitally controlled, multi-path feedback architecture and controllable current source.

We report that in humans, mice, fruit flies, and worms, the ribosomal RNAs and the transcribed spacers of 45S are densely packed with organism-specific sequence motifs that are primarily shared with nervous system genes. The human ribosomal RNAs and 45S spacers contain 1,723 such motifs. Specific combinations of these motifs are predominantly found in 3,430 human nervous system genes, of which 1,046 are genes associated with brain disorders, including autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. The sequences of the 1,723 motifs and their locations in the introns and exons of nervous system genes are unique to primates. Experimental evidence indicates that …

Regenerating highly aligned soft tissues such as nerves, skeletal muscle, and cardiac tissue remains a major challenge in biomedical engineering due to the complex structural and biochemical cues needed to guide cellular behavior. Tissue engineering scaffolds for aligned soft tissue must allow massive cell infiltration and provide cues that direct cell alignment. Aligned nanofibers offer direction cues but must be included at low density to leave room for cell population. This thesis presents a strategy for fabricating and characterizing nanofiber-embedded hydrogel composites where a permissive hydrogel matrix supports the low density aligned nanofiber architecture. Cancer stem cells (CSC) are cancer cells in a tumor mass that may self-renew and develop into various cell types, resulting in a heterogeneous tumor. CSCs have been shown to have a role in many facets of cancer formation, including tumor genesis, proliferation, and metastatic activity. They are also implicated in chemotherapeutic treatment resistance and the recurrence of some malignancies. Based on these capacities, CSCs have been identified as the next target for cancer therapy and control. BackgroundLesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and related community (LGBTQ+) individuals have significantly increased risk for mental health problems. However, research on inequalities in LGBTQ+ mental healthcare is limited because LGBTQ+ status is usually only contained in unstructured, free-text sections of electronic health records.AimsThis study investigated whether natural language processing (NLP), specifically the large language model, Bi-directional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), can identify LGBTQ+ status from this unstructured text in mental health records.MethodUsing electronic health records from a large mental healthcare provider in south London, UK, relevant search terms were identified and a random sample of 10 000 strings extracted. …

Introduction: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) face food insecurity, unstable housing and fragmented services that render conventional diabetes pathways unworkable and amplify complications. Methods: Between January and April 2024, we conducted a nationwide, cross-sectional mixed-methods survey of front-line professionals via NHS, inclusion-health and voluntary-sector networks, analysing quantitative data (n = 104) with ANOVA, Kruskal–Wallis tests and ordinal logistic regression, and subjecting free-text responses to reflexive thematic analysis, before converging findings to develop the Integrated Holistic Diabetes Care Model for Homelessness (IHD-CMPH). High turnover rates among clinical research staff present a business problem that reduces continuity, quality, and cost-effectiveness of clinical trials. This problem is important to clinical research managers because employee stability is essential for participant retention, regulatory compliance, and operational success. Grounded in the job embeddedness and transformational leadership theories, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to identify and explore the effective strategies that some clinical research site managers use to reduce employee turnover in the southeastern United States. The problem that prompted this study was the lack of professional development opportunities that address novice K–12 teachers’ technological self-efficacy. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of novice K–12 teachers in a large urban school district in Louisiana regarding professional development opportunities for technological self-efficacy. The conceptual framework for this study was composed of Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy and the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) framework. Ten novice teachers with fewer than 5 years of teaching experience participated in semistructured interviews. BACKGROUND: Adults in rural Australia are at elevated risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). To date, no intervention trials have evaluated the impact of dietitian delivered nutrition therapy using telehealth exclusively in patients recruited in the primary care setting. The primary aim was to assess effectiveness of telehealth delivered Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) on change in dietary intake energy, reported as percent energy derived from nutrient-dense (core) foods. Secondary aims included assessment of the intervention effects on percentage weight loss, quality of life, health literacy and patient engagement in their health (patient activation).
