Bandung And The Future Of Africa’S Pasts, Rabiat Akande, Olufemi Elias Oct 2025

Bandung And The Future Of Africa’S Pasts, Rabiat Akande, Olufemi Elias

Articles & Book Chapters

The idea of decolonization that animated the spirit of the 1955 Bandung Conference continues to power imaginations of an alternative to the world Bandung inhabited. In this essay, we look upon Africa from Bandung, and simultaneously from Africa to Bandung, to recover an “otherwise”—a seeing of the future from Africa’s pasts. In the future envisioned in Bandung and beyond, flag independence was regarded as the first stop in the project of decolonization.1 The conference was to provide both “guidance to mankind … [on] the way which it must take to attain safety and peace” and “evidence that Asia and Africa …

Activation Of Propane On Ag–Pdo(101) Model Surfaces, Mustafa Karatok Oct 2025

Activation Of Propane On Ag–Pdo(101) Model Surfaces, Mustafa Karatok

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Oxidation of alkanes remains a central challenge in catalysis due to the high activation barriers of C–H bonds and the thermodynamic favorability of complete oxidation. Palladium oxide (PdO), particularly its (101) facet, is known for its high reactivity in alkane oxidation, which is attributed to its coordinatively unsaturated palladium (Pd) and O atoms. In this study, we investigate the effect of silver (Ag) incorporation on the oxidation behavior of propane over PdO(101) using temperature-programmed reaction spectroscopy (TPRS) under controlled conditions. While pristine PdO(101) exhibits complete oxidation of propane with CO₂ and H₂O desorption at high temperatures (approximately 475 K), Ag …

Association Between Fall Risk And Orthostatic Hypotension In The Elderly In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Pramod Srikant Kshirasagar Oct 2025

Association Between Fall Risk And Orthostatic Hypotension In The Elderly In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Pramod Srikant Kshirasagar

Doctorate in Kinesiology

Background: Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is an underrecognized contributor to falls among older adults, particularly in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) where frailty, multimorbidity, and polypharmacy is common. Methods: Thirty-three SNF residents aged ≥65 years completed orthostatic testing after five minutes supine and at one and three minutes of standing. Fall and injury histories were extracted from records and resident reports. Analyses included nonparametric tests, logistic regression, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, and exploratory qualitative coding of injury descriptions. Results: Systolic and diastolic blood pressures decreased significantly from supine to standing (both p < .001). OH was more prevalent among fallers than non-fallers (96% vs 40%; χ2(1) = 12.68, p = .007). In logistic regression with OH as the outcome, fall history was strongly associated with OH (OR = 27.0, 95% CI [3.67–198.69], p = .001); ROC analysis showed excellent discrimination (AUC = 0.84, p = .029). The most frequently coded injuries were hip and femur fractures, followed by skin tears, head injuries, and humeral fractures (exploratory). Conclusions: OH is strongly linked to falls among SNF residents. Serial measurements at 1 and 3 minutes improved detection, supporting routine OH screening in fall risk assessment and proactive interventions (e.g., medication review, activity scheduling, and environmental safety).

Green Synthesis Of Silver Nanoparticles Using Sumac Fruit By Microwave And Traditional Methods: Characterization, Anticancer, And Antimicrobial Activities, Melek Hinis, Tuğçe Karaduman Yeşi̇ldal, Demet Erdönmez, Ayfer Menteş

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) was carried out with sumac fruit extract using a microwave-assisted (MWA) method and a traditional method (TDM). The properties of nanoparticles synthesized by both methods were characterized and compared.Although both methods are environmentally friendly, the MWA method was faster, more efficient, and economical. When creating Ag-NPs, variables like temperature, pH, reaction duration, extract concentration, and silver ion concentration were considered. The production of Ag-NPs was confirmed by ultraviolet–visible spectra that displayed the surface plasmon resonance band centered at 433 and 436 nm in the MWA and TDM techniques, respectively. The results of the scanning …

Simulation Of Three-Degree-Of-Freedom Internal Mode Sliding Mode Control For Non-Ideal Single-Inductor Dual-Output Boost Converter, Bingli Liu, Jiarong Wu, Lin Yang, Dinglin Yan

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To reduce the cross-interference in the single-inductor dual-output (SIDO) Boost converter and to enhance the output accuracy and stability of the system, the parasitic resistances of the circuit components were considered, and a three-degree-of-freedom internal model sliding mode control strategy was proposed for the non-ideal SIDO Boost converter. An affine nonlinear mathematical model of the non-ideal SIDO Boost converter was established, and the nonlinear system was linearized and decoupled into two linear subsystems based on the differential geometry theory. The linear subsystem was designed as a three-degree-of-freedom internal model controller and a sliding mode controller, respectively. The robustness …

An Improved Virtual Terrain Generation Method Based On Simplex Noise, Bo Shen, Jianqin Zhang, Shuaibao Ma, Zheng Wen

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To address the issues of high computational complexity, slow generation speed, and insufficient realism present in traditional virtual terrain generation methods, this study proposed an improved virtual terrain generation method based on Simplex noise. This method leveraged the advantages of Simplex noise, such as high computational efficiency, low hardware overhead, and more natural randomness, to construct a basic terrain template. A fractal algorithm was introduced to enhance the level of terrain details through the superposition of noises with multiple frequencies and amplitudes. With the integration of a turbulence algorithm, random perturbations and complexity were added to further improve the …

Research On Constrained Programming Of Manipulator Using Rrt* Algorithm And Ellipse Prior, Zhen Yang, Li Su, Zhiyu Cheng Oct 2025

Research On Constrained Programming Of Manipulator Using Rrt* Algorithm And Ellipse Prior, Zhen Yang, Li Su, Zhiyu Cheng

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: There are problems in the traditional RRT* algorithm using a uniform sampling strategy applied in constrained programming problems, such as inaccurate turning guidance of sampling points and unnecessary node cost comparisons, which lead to an increase in additional time costs. To address these issues, an improved RRT* algorithm was proposed. This algorithm leveraged a heuristic function cost of the projected sampling points to make an ellipse prior judgment on the sampling points. Based on the ellipse prior, the sampling points were judged to determine whether they could optimize the path and shorten the programming time. The geodesics were used …

Robust Identification Of Dual-Rate Sampled Nonlinear Systems Based On Salr Network, Wenbin Jiang, Yuqing Cao, Li Xie, Huizhong Yang Oct 2025

Robust Identification Of Dual-Rate Sampled Nonlinear Systems Based On Salr Network, Wenbin Jiang, Yuqing Cao, Li Xie, Huizhong Yang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: A robust identification algorithm based on the self-join adjacent-feedback loop reservoir (SALR) network was proposed for dual-rate sampled nonlinear systems with complex nonlinear characteristics and measurement outputs containing outliers. The SALR network was applied to describe the nonlinear characteristics of the target system, and wavelet neurons were injected into the reservoir to enhance its memory and nonlinear description capabilities. The identification problem of the nonlinear system was transformed into the identification problem of the network's output weight matrix. The Huber loss function was used to construct the criterion function, and an error threshold was introduced to improve the robustness …

Examining Children’S Intuitive Understanding Of Mechanical Systems With A Gears Assembly Task, Nicole Taboada Oct 2025

Examining Children’S Intuitive Understanding Of Mechanical Systems With A Gears Assembly Task, Nicole Taboada

Theses

Children’s causal reasoning about machines and their components is crucial for acquiring knowledge about science and math. Mechanistic understanding involves knowing how parts can be effectively connected to work together as a functional mechanical system. Little is known about how children’s understanding of mechanical systems develops across the lifespan. Legare and Lombrozo (2014) developed a gears assembly task to assess children’s understanding and learning of mechanics but did not track this skill across ages. The present study adapted the gears assembly task to measure mechanistic understanding in children between the ages of 4 to 11 years and adults. The goal …

Adjudicating Atrocity: Reading Hitesh Verma V State Of Uttarakhand As A "Landmark" Case In The Judicial Discourse On Caste Violence, Tejaswi Chhatwal

Socio-Legal Review

This article critically examines the Supreme Court’s judgment in Hitesh Verma v State of Uttarakhand (2020) and argues for reading it as a “landmark trial” in the judicial undoing of reform—namely, the statutory changes introduced by the 2016 Amendment to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989. Existing socio-legal scholarship on atrocity jurisprudence has shown that the judicial understanding of caste violence and doctrinally instituted evidentiary standards have historically operated to invisibilise caste from crime’s framework. As a result, most instances of caste-based discrimination and violence have not been named as offences of “atrocity” under the …

All Decisions

In this nuisance holdover proceeding, the landlord moved to strike several of the tenant's objections and affirmative defenses. The court denied striking the tenant's service-related objections, finding that afternoon/evening service attempts might not constitute "reasonable application" if the landlord knew of the tenant's schedule. It also preserved the tenant's defense that a recertification notice could imply waiver and the possibility of a post-judgment right to cure nuisance, citing equitable factors. However, the court granted striking objections that the termination notice was vague and that a notice to cure was required, holding that the notice adequately described the alleged conditions and …
