The Investigation Of Nickel-Based Catalysts For The Oxidative Dehydrogenation Of Ethane, Justin Lane Park
The Investigation Of Nickel-Based Catalysts For The Oxidative Dehydrogenation Of Ethane, Justin Lane Park
Theses and Dissertations
The Investigation of Nickel-Based Catalysts for the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane Justin Lane ParkDepartment of Chemistry & Biochemistry, BYU Doctor of Philosophy Chemistry The advancement of creating ethylene from ethane via oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) rather than the traditional direct dehydrogenation is right on the cusp of commercialization. The oxidative pathway provides a novel route that reduces the operating temperature of this reaction by 400-500°C. A variety of metals including Mo, V, and Ni that have redox properties suitable for the partial oxidation of small chain alkanes have been investigated. Currently, a MoVNbTe oxide is the most promising catalyst but it …
Radio Frequency Interference Cancellation,Appraisal, Detection, And Correction, Michael J. Lambert
Radio Frequency Interference Cancellation,Appraisal, Detection, And Correction, Michael J. Lambert
Theses and Dissertations
Radio Astronomy, the study of distant objects in the radio spectrum, is set at defiance against all other users of the electromagnetic spectrum. Where traditional use would fill the electromagnetic spectrum with as much transmission and information as possible, Radio Astronomy would rather no man-made signals existed. Since that is not possible, they grumble and have to deal with unwanted transmissions impinging upon their instruments. I have demonstrated that subspace projection can remove these unwanted signals from Radio Astronomical data in post processing. I demonstrate it both on simulated data and on data taken from the Very Large Array radio …
Molecular Methods For The Identification And Quantification Of Cyanobacteria In Surface Water Sources, Treyton Michael Moore
Molecular Methods For The Identification And Quantification Of Cyanobacteria In Surface Water Sources, Treyton Michael Moore
Theses and Dissertations
Geosmin is a strong musty-flavored organic compound that is responsible for many taste-and-odor events in surface drinking water sources like lakes and reservoirs. The taste threshold of geosmin for humans is lower than 10 ng/L. Traditional treatment methods will not remove geosmin to this level. Additional water treatment methods must be implemented to successfully remove the geosmin and its associated flavor and odor from drinking water. Furthermore, geosmin is produced by cyanobacteria somewhat sporadically, so it is difficult to predict when taste-and-odor events are going to occur. The difficulty involved with predicting geosmin events has led most water treatment facilities …
Model Testing Of Soil Bacteria Population Dynamics, Adam Harlan Heninger
Model Testing Of Soil Bacteria Population Dynamics, Adam Harlan Heninger
Theses and Dissertations
This is one of the first time series studies of bacteria in soils supporting actively growing corn crops. Mathematically modeling bacteria population dynamics has the potential as a tool to more precisely assess the economic optimal nitrogen fertilizer rate for farmers. As a first step in this modeling effort, we examine the possibility that the bacteria population growth might be described by a dynamic model developed in the food sciences describing bacteria growth in food meant for human consumption. We make the assumption that air temperature above the soil can be used as an approximation for soil temperature. Also, because …
Understanding Soil Liquefaction Of The 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, Donald Jared Anderson
Understanding Soil Liquefaction Of The 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, Donald Jared Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
The Kumamoto earthquake of April 2016 produced two foreshocks of moment magnitude 6.0 and 6.2 and a mainshock of 7.0, which should have been followed by widespread and intense soil liquefaction. A Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance team (GEER) led by Professor Rob Kayen of UC Berkley was dispatched to the Kumamoto Plain--which is in Kumamoto Prefecture, the southern main island of Japan--immediately following the earthquake. The Japanese and U.S. engineers in the GEER team observed mostly minor and sporadic liquefaction, which was unexpected as the local site geology, known soil stratigraphy, and intensity of the seismic loading made the Kumamoto …

Time-Resolved Photoluminescence Of 6-Thienyl-Lumazine Flourophore In Cellulose Acetate Nanofibers For Detection Of Mercury Ions, Noura A. Al Shamisi
Chemistry Theses
Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements were used to characterize the photophysical properties of 6-thienyllumazine (TLm) fluorophores in cellulose acetate nanofibers (NFs) in the presence and absence of mercuric acetate salts. In solution, excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) from TLm to water molecules was observed at pH from 2 to 12. The insertion of the thienyl group into lumazine (Lm) introduces cis and trans conformers while keeping the same tautomerization structures. Global and target analysis was employed to resolve the true emission spectra of all prototropic, tautomeric, and rotameric species for TLm in water. However, in the NFs solid film no ESPT from TLm …
Metamaterial-Based Sensor Design Using Split Ring Resonator And Hilbert Fractal For Biomedical Application, Nadin M. N. Alrayes
Metamaterial-Based Sensor Design Using Split Ring Resonator And Hilbert Fractal For Biomedical Application, Nadin M. N. Alrayes
Electrical Engineering Theses
In this research, a simple and efficient approach is presented to design a metamaterial-based sensitive sensor for biomedical applications. The metamaterial based sensor is designed to differentiate between different types of cancer cell lines based on their electrical properties. The sensor is designed by incorporating a single circular split ring resonator (SRR) and a Hilbert fractal curve. The SRR is used considering its capacitive and inductive resonance properties, thereby making the SRR a favorable candidate for sensing applications. Moreover, the Hilbert fractal curve was used as a defected ground structure to increase sensor sensitivity and selectivity. The Hilbert fractal ground …

Development Of A New Analytical Method For Separation And Quantitative Determination Of Synthetic Cathinones In Urine Using Gas Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Jasim Ali Ali Alzaabi
Chemistry Theses
This thesis is concerned with a new class of drugs known as synthetic cathinones, which overruns the drug markets in recent years as “legal highs” drugs, under different commercial names such as bath salts. All synthetic cathinone derivatives consist of a chiral center and usually sold out as a racemic mixture. Usually, one of the two enantiomers will have stronger central nervous system (CNS) stimulatory activity and the other one may have no significant CNS activity or addictive properties. A new sensitive and selective analytical method was developed for the simultaneous determination of ten synthetic cathinones enantiomers in spiked urine …

Tracking Client Outcomes: A Qualitative Assessment Of Civil Legal Aid's Use Of Outcomes Data, With Recommendations, David Udell, Amy Widman
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
In virtually all sectors of society, people are using data to improve what they do. Everyone, it seems, is interested in data, and is searching for best strategies to draw on its power. The stakes are high in the civil legal aid community, where strengthened advocacy can enable people to preserve their homes, their relationships with their children, their life savings, their physical and emotional well-being, and even their freedom.
Yet, in the civil legal aid community, awareness of the power of data is just beginning to take root. Traditionally, civil legal aid has been thinly funded, with little infrastructure …

At Least Some Rights The White Man Was Bound To Respect: Bland V. Beverly And A Contract For Freedom In The Age Of Slavery, H. Robert Baker
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
By law in Maryland, slaves could not enter into legally binding contracts. Nonetheless, in 1833 Beverly Dowling struck an agreement with his owner, Sophia Bland, for his freedom in exchange for $200. Dowling paid $173 towards his end of the agreement before being arrested as a runaway and sold to a slave trader. Beverly Dowling petitioned the Baltimore city court for his freedom, and a jury found that he was free because he had, in the process of raising the money to pay his owner, traveled to the state of New York to work. I survey the law of manumission …

Straight Actors In Lgbt Roles: Creative Casting Or Employment Discrimination?, Erica Ruff
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note examines the trend of casting straight actors in LGBT roles, termed "gay face," and explores its implications as a form of employment discrimination. It argues that this practice limits opportunities for LGBT actors and discusses the legal challenges in addressing this issue under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which does not explicitly cover sexual orientation. The note highlights the tension between anti-discrimination laws and First Amendment protections for artistic expression, noting that courts often favor the latter.

Bargained Justice: The History And Psychology Of Plea Bargaining And The Trial Penalty, Lucian E. Dervan
Bargained Justice: The History And Psychology Of Plea Bargaining And The Trial Penalty, Lucian E. Dervan
Law Faculty Scholarship
In Bargained Justice: The History and Psychology of Plea Bargaining and the Trial Penalty, Lucian E. Dervan traces the historical evolution of plea bargaining from its rejection under English common law to its dominance in modern American criminal adjudication. The article demonstrates that inducements to plead guilty—once condemned as coercive and incompatible with truth-seeking—emerged in the United States in the nineteenth century, expanded during periods of overcriminalization and prohibition, and were ultimately constitutionalized in Brady v. United States (1970). Dervan critically examines the Supreme Court’s assumption in Brady that innocent defendants would not falsely plead guilty in significant numbers. Drawing …
Slouching Towards Oblivion: Divergent Implementation And Potential Exodus Of Chevron Analysis In The Supreme Court's Interpretation Of Immigration Law, Amy L. Moore
Law Faculty Scholarship
In Slouching Towards Oblivion: Divergent Implementation and Potential Exodus of Chevron Analysis in the Supreme Court’s Interpretation of Immigration Law, Amy L. Moore examines the Supreme Court’s uneven application of Chevron deference in cases interpreting the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). Mapping the Court’s immigration jurisprudence from 1984 through 2018, the Article documents a striking inconsistency: although the Court has repeatedly interpreted the INA, it has invoked Chevron in only a minority of those cases. Through a doctrinal survey of decisions such as Cardoza-Fonseca, Aguirre-Aguirre, and St. Cyr, the Article identifies recurring rationales for declining deference, …

Sable antelope (Hippotragus niger)exhibit sexual dimorphism, where males and females look different from each other in color and size. Within this difference between the sexes, there are a wide spectrum in coat colors among females, ranging from light tan to dark brown. The variations seen in female coat color in other species are known to be hormonally caused by testosterone. Testosterone levels are also related to dominance within the herd in other species. The first objective of this study is to determine if the variations in coat color are associated with the dominance hierarchy among female sable …
