Walking The Talk: Embedding Standards-Based Grading In An Educational Leadership Course, Matt Townsley Apr 2019

Walking The Talk: Embedding Standards-Based Grading In An Educational Leadership Course, Matt Townsley

Journal of Research Initiatives

The purpose of this paper is to provide a model for educational leadership faculty who aspire to walk the talk of effective feedback by embedding standards-based grading (SBG) in their courses. Rather than focusing on learning, points are the currency of K-12 classrooms across the country. Over 100 years of grading research suggests typical grading practices are subjective at best. Some schools are responding by implementing SBG, yet few articles describe how higher education embeds this philosophy in educator preparation coursework. In this essay, the author documents how to design assessments, align rubrics, and provide feedback to aspiring school leaders …

An Application Of Systems Science For The Usage Of Web–Tools In Environmental Education: The Case Of Western Attica, Greece, Anastasios Mavrakis, Evangelos C. Papakitsos, Christina Papapanousi, Christina Papavasileiou

Journal of Research Initiatives

Geography plays a leading role in developing the objectives of Environmental Education. Through Geography lessons, applications and tools, pupils should learn about the major environmental and developmental problems through issue-based learning. They must be given opportunities to explore how these issues relate to their everyday lives and what is the impact on the quality of the natural and social environment. Teachers can promote a holistic outlook, through promoting a multidimensional study of environmental problems on a variety of scales, e.g., through historical maps, which are of significant value, because through them students gain perspective on the living environment and the …

Hegemonic Masculinities And Children’S Picture Books, Nathan N. Taylor Apr 2019

Hegemonic Masculinities And Children’S Picture Books, Nathan N. Taylor

Journal of Research Initiatives

This study focused on the role of hegemonic masculinities in children’s picture books. Chiefly, marginalized and subordinated masculinities are highlighted to investigate their relationships with dominant and complicit masculinities. This was done under a feminist reading of patriarchy and the connection between patriarchy and masculinities. Utilizing a critical discourse analysis framework, the author problematizes the personal transformation of the protagonists in three children’s picture books. The personal transformation attends to the masculine subject on an individual level, but fails to address how hegemonic masculinities and patriarchy operate at a discursive and corporeal level. Suggestions are made from the findings on …

White Plight: A Review Of White Kids: Growing Up With Privilege In A Racially Divided America, Angela S. Farmer

Journal of Research Initiatives

The United States of America offers the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. However, even as fellow Americans find themselves firmly ensconced in the 21st century, it is clear that equality of opportunity is not available for all.

In newly published, "White Kids" (Hagerman, 2018), unveils the reality witnessed daily in schools across the nation. Some children are afforded enhanced benefits based on the school they attend and the settings in which they are raised. Rather than allowing this evidence to stand alone; however, the author spends years with a group of students who attend a variety …

Geography

Given the varying manifestations of climate change over time and the influence of climate perceptions on adaptation, it is important to understand whether farmer perceptions match patterns of environmental change from observational data. We use a combination of social and environmental data to understand farmer perceptions related to rainy season onset. Household surveys were conducted with 1171 farmers across Zambia at the end of the 2015/16 growing season eliciting their perceptions of historic changes in rainy season onset and their heuristics about when rain onset occurs. We compare farmers' perceptions with satellite-gauge-derived rainfall data from the Climate Hazards Group Infrared …

Charge-Transfer Or Excimeric State? Exploring The Nature Of The Excited State In Cofacially Arrayed Polyfluorene Derivatives, Ainur Abzhanova, Lena V. Ivanova, Denan Wang, Tushar S. Navale, Sameh H. Abdelwahed, Maxim Vadimovich Ivanov, Sergey V. Lindeman, Rajendra Rathore, Scott A. Reid

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

It is well known that upon electronic excitation various π-stacked dimers readily exhibit excimer formation, facilitated by a perfect sandwich-like arrangement between the chromophores. However, it is unclear whether such a dimer is also capable of electron transfer upon excitation, if a strong electron-donating group is covalently attached. In this work, we probe the nature of the excited state in a series of cofacially arrayed polyfluorene derivatives with electron-rich aromatic donor attached via a methylene linker. Our studies show that in all cases excimer formation is energetically favorable, and promotion of a charge-transfer state in such systems is possible but …

Interpenetration Of Powers: Channels And Obstacles For Populist Impulses, Anya Bernstein Apr 2019

Interpenetration Of Powers: Channels And Obstacles For Populist Impulses, Anya Bernstein

Journal Articles

Discussions of populism often focus on the most visible points of executive power: individual leaders. Yet individual leaders only accomplish things through administrative apparatuses that enable and support their power. Rejecting a political theology that imagines sovereignty as inhering in a single decision-maker, this article turns to political pragmatics focused on the people who populate the government. I draw on interviews with administrators in the government of two successful but quite different democracies. The first is the United States, an old, flagship democratic state. The second is Taiwan, which transitioned from a four-decade military dictatorship to a vibrant democracy in …

Anti-Sanctuary And Immigration Localism, Pratheepan Gulasekaram, Rick Su, Rose Cuison Villazor Apr 2019

Anti-Sanctuary And Immigration Localism, Pratheepan Gulasekaram, Rick Su, Rose Cuison Villazor

Journal Articles

A new front in the war against sanctuary cities has emerged. Until recently, the fight against sanctuary cities has largely focused on the federal government's efforts to defund states like California and cities like Chicago and New York for resisting federal immigration enforcement. Thus far, localities have mainly prevailed against this federal anti-sanctuary campaign, relying on federalism protections afforded by the Tenth Amendment's anticommandeering and anticoercion doctrines. Recently, however, the battle lines have shifted with the proliferation of state-level laws that similarly seek to punish sanctuary cities. States across the country are directly mandating local participation, and courts thus far …

The Convergence Of Engagement Leadership And Leader-Driven Retrenchment Business Strategies: A Phenomenological Approach, Larry Mitchel Hill Apr 2019

The Convergence Of Engagement Leadership And Leader-Driven Retrenchment Business Strategies: A Phenomenological Approach, Larry Mitchel Hill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Scholars and practitioners have studied employee engagement extensively since the late 1990s. Because engaged employees can create a competitive advantage for business enterprises, academics and practitioners have emphasized the need for further research into the relationship between leadership, context, and engagement. There is a gap between knowledge of employee engagement and leaders’ ability to directly engage employees through decisions, actions, and behaviors. Researchers have suggested that employees’ situational assessment also influences their engagement. The purpose of this study was to explore how leader-driven retrenchment strategies during a severe and protracted economic downturn interacted with business leaders’ ability to engage their …

Title Ix And Title Vii: Parallel Remedies In Combating Sex Discrimination In Educational Employment, Lynn Ridgeway Zehrt Apr 2019

Title Ix And Title Vii: Parallel Remedies In Combating Sex Discrimination In Educational Employment, Lynn Ridgeway Zehrt

Law Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines the federal circuit split concerning whether Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 provides the exclusive remedy for employment discrimination claims in federally funded educational institutions, or whether Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 offers a parallel avenue for relief. While some circuits hold that Title VII preempts employment-based sex discrimination claims under Title IX—emphasizing Title VII’s comprehensive administrative scheme and damages limitations—others permit plaintiffs to proceed directly under Title IX, thereby avoiding administrative exhaustion requirements and statutory damages caps. Through a detailed analysis of statutory structure, Supreme Court precedent, and especially the …

Space Use And Annual Survival Of Hybridized Mouflon Sheep In Hawaii And Comparing Estimates Of Population Size Through Instantaneous Sampling And Photographic Capture-Recapture, Bradley Jay Adams Apr 2019

Space Use And Annual Survival Of Hybridized Mouflon Sheep In Hawaii And Comparing Estimates Of Population Size Through Instantaneous Sampling And Photographic Capture-Recapture, Bradley Jay Adams

Theses and Dissertations

Significant efforts in conservation are devoted to the management and study of ungulates, due to their significant roles in ecosystems as well as their potential economic value. This is especially true for species considered exotic, such as mouflon sheep (Ovis musimon) in Hawaii. Effective management of an exotic species requires an understanding of ecological metrics such as space use, survival, and population size. We provided these metrics for a population of mouflon that have hybridized with feral sheep (Ovis aries) on the island of Hawaii. In Chapter 1, we quantified space use and annual survival of sheep in an area …

“Chosen Instruments”: Tolkien’S Hobbits And The Rhetoric Of The Dispossessed, Samuel Bennett Watson Apr 2019

“Chosen Instruments”: Tolkien’S Hobbits And The Rhetoric Of The Dispossessed, Samuel Bennett Watson

Theses and Dissertations

Tolkien’s hobbit characters are capable of a particular type of rhetorical persuasion, one which relies on their ability to leverage their status as outsiders among the other people of Middle-earth. The hobbits are uniquely suited to the task of bringing unity to Middle-earth’s people because of the simplicity of their rhetoric, which focuses on proving their own morality and presenting truths without elaboration. When compared with the text, the film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings also help highlight the importance that Tolkien placed on the simplicity of hobbit rhetoric. These abilities of the hobbits become clear through a …

The Accuracy Of A Spanish Dynamic Assessment Of Narrative Language In Identifying Language Disorder: A Cross Validation Study, Mariah Forbush Romero Apr 2019

The Accuracy Of A Spanish Dynamic Assessment Of Narrative Language In Identifying Language Disorder: A Cross Validation Study, Mariah Forbush Romero

Theses and Dissertations

This cross-validation study investigated the extent that a Spanish narrative language dynamic assessment accurately identified students with and without language disorder across three separate samples of bilingual and monolingual Spanish-speaking students from Guatemala, Mexico, and the U.S. Students with language disorder and students with typically developing language were administered a narrative dynamic assessment in Spanish. A test-teach-retest format of dynamic assessment was followed and student modifiability, or learning ability, was rated directly following the teaching phase of the assessment. Results indicated that the most predictive dynamic assessment variables for the Guatemalan sample were posttest scores combined with two separate modifiability …

Exploring Fit For Nonlinear Structural Equation Models, Phillip Isaac Pfleger Apr 2019

Exploring Fit For Nonlinear Structural Equation Models, Phillip Isaac Pfleger

Theses and Dissertations

Fit indices and fit measures commonly used to determine the accuracy and desirability of structural equation models are expected to be insensitive to nonlinearity in the data. This includes measures as ubiquitous as the CFI, TLI, RMSEA, SRMR, AIC, and BIC. Despite this, some software will report these measures when certain models are used. Consequently, some researchers may be led to use these fit measures without realizing the impropriety of the act. Alternative fit measures have been proposed, but these measures require further testing. As part of this thesis, a large simulation study was carried out to investigate alternative fit …

A Comparison Of Mobile And Computer Receptive Language Esl Tests, Aislin Pickett Davis Apr 2019

A Comparison Of Mobile And Computer Receptive Language Esl Tests, Aislin Pickett Davis

Theses and Dissertations

The option to bring-your-own-device (BYOD) to educational settings is becoming more prevalent as mobile technologies are more accessible than ever, yet little research has been done to examine the effect of those devices on language assessment. In this study, participants (n=175) were divided by stratified random sampling into four groups. Using a Latin square design to control for ordering, two forms of a multiple-choice reading and listening exam were administered over two days. On each day, participants took one test on a BYOD mobile device and one on a computer. A repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine the effect …

The Investigation Of Nickel-Based Catalysts For The Oxidative Dehydrogenation Of Ethane, Justin Lane Park

Theses and Dissertations

The Investigation of Nickel-Based Catalysts for the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane Justin Lane ParkDepartment of Chemistry & Biochemistry, BYU Doctor of Philosophy Chemistry The advancement of creating ethylene from ethane via oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) rather than the traditional direct dehydrogenation is right on the cusp of commercialization. The oxidative pathway provides a novel route that reduces the operating temperature of this reaction by 400-500°C. A variety of metals including Mo, V, and Ni that have redox properties suitable for the partial oxidation of small chain alkanes have been investigated. Currently, a MoVNbTe oxide is the most promising catalyst but it …

Radio Frequency Interference Cancellation,Appraisal, Detection, And Correction, Michael J. Lambert Apr 2019

Radio Frequency Interference Cancellation,Appraisal, Detection, And Correction, Michael J. Lambert

Theses and Dissertations

Radio Astronomy, the study of distant objects in the radio spectrum, is set at defiance against all other users of the electromagnetic spectrum. Where traditional use would fill the electromagnetic spectrum with as much transmission and information as possible, Radio Astronomy would rather no man-made signals existed. Since that is not possible, they grumble and have to deal with unwanted transmissions impinging upon their instruments. I have demonstrated that subspace projection can remove these unwanted signals from Radio Astronomical data in post processing. I demonstrate it both on simulated data and on data taken from the Very Large Array radio …

Molecular Methods For The Identification And Quantification Of Cyanobacteria In Surface Water Sources, Treyton Michael Moore Apr 2019

Molecular Methods For The Identification And Quantification Of Cyanobacteria In Surface Water Sources, Treyton Michael Moore

Theses and Dissertations

Geosmin is a strong musty-flavored organic compound that is responsible for many taste-and-odor events in surface drinking water sources like lakes and reservoirs. The taste threshold of geosmin for humans is lower than 10 ng/L. Traditional treatment methods will not remove geosmin to this level. Additional water treatment methods must be implemented to successfully remove the geosmin and its associated flavor and odor from drinking water. Furthermore, geosmin is produced by cyanobacteria somewhat sporadically, so it is difficult to predict when taste-and-odor events are going to occur. The difficulty involved with predicting geosmin events has led most water treatment facilities …

Model Testing Of Soil Bacteria Population Dynamics, Adam Harlan Heninger Apr 2019

Model Testing Of Soil Bacteria Population Dynamics, Adam Harlan Heninger

Theses and Dissertations

This is one of the first time series studies of bacteria in soils supporting actively growing corn crops. Mathematically modeling bacteria population dynamics has the potential as a tool to more precisely assess the economic optimal nitrogen fertilizer rate for farmers. As a first step in this modeling effort, we examine the possibility that the bacteria population growth might be described by a dynamic model developed in the food sciences describing bacteria growth in food meant for human consumption. We make the assumption that air temperature above the soil can be used as an approximation for soil temperature. Also, because …

Understanding Soil Liquefaction Of The 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, Donald Jared Anderson Apr 2019

Understanding Soil Liquefaction Of The 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, Donald Jared Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The Kumamoto earthquake of April 2016 produced two foreshocks of moment magnitude 6.0 and 6.2 and a mainshock of 7.0, which should have been followed by widespread and intense soil liquefaction. A Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance team (GEER) led by Professor Rob Kayen of UC Berkley was dispatched to the Kumamoto Plain--which is in Kumamoto Prefecture, the southern main island of Japan--immediately following the earthquake. The Japanese and U.S. engineers in the GEER team observed mostly minor and sporadic liquefaction, which was unexpected as the local site geology, known soil stratigraphy, and intensity of the seismic loading made the Kumamoto …
