Mri Of Cranial Nerve Enhancement: King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital (Kcmh) Case Series, Supak Chutiphaijit, Sasitorn Petcharunpaisan

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Abnormal enhancement of cranial nerves (CNs) can be observed in a variety of disease. We present eightcases of cranial nerve (CN) enhancement, including inflammatory process, hematologic malignancy, perineural spreading of extracranial tumor, cerebrospinal fluid seeding of high grade primary brain tumor, demyelination and post radiation change. Based on our case series, the findings cover board differential diagnoses. The use of contrast enhanced 3-dimensional (3D) T1-weighted image (T1WI) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and reasonable MRI sequences can increase conspicuity of the finding. Furthermore, incorporating underlying disease, clinical duration, and associated intracranial / extracranial findings may help narrow the probable etiologies.

Regularized Fourier Ptychographic Microscopy, Shiqi Xu Apr 2019

Regularized Fourier Ptychographic Microscopy, Shiqi Xu

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Quantitative phase image (QPI) is a popular microscopy technique for studying cell morphology. Recently, Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) has emerged as a low-cost computational microscopy technique for forming high-resolution wide-field QPI images by taking multiple images from different illumination angles. However, the applicability of FPM to dynamic imaging is limited by its high data requirement. In this thesis, we propose new methods for highly compressive FPM imaging using a data-adaptive sparse coding and an online plug-and-play (PnP) method with non-local priors based on the fast iterative shrinkage/threshold algorithm (FISTA). We validate the proposed method on both simulated and experimental data …

Coupling Metaproteomics With Taxonomy To Determine Responses Of Bacterioplankton To Organic Perturbations In The Western Arctic Ocean, Molly P. Mikan Apr 2019

Coupling Metaproteomics With Taxonomy To Determine Responses Of Bacterioplankton To Organic Perturbations In The Western Arctic Ocean, Molly P. Mikan

OES Theses and Dissertations

Understanding how the functionality of marine microbial communities change over time and space, and which taxonomic groups dominate distinct metabolic pathways, are essential to understanding the ecology of these microbiomes and the factors contributing to their regulation of elemental cycles in the oceans. The primary goal of this dissertation was to investigate the community metabolic and taxonomic responses and the degradation potential of two compositionally distinct marine microbiomes within the shallow shelf ecosystem of the Chukchi Sea after rapid fluctuations in algal organic matter availability. Novel bioinformatics tools were collaboratively developed and used together with community proteomics (metaproteomics) to characterize …

Asthma-Related Health Outcomes In New Jersey After A Natural Disaster Event, My Ngoc Thuy Nguyen Apr 2019

Asthma-Related Health Outcomes In New Jersey After A Natural Disaster Event, My Ngoc Thuy Nguyen

Health Services Research Dissertations

The occurrence of a natural disaster event such as a hurricane may further hinder the asthma management of asthmatic individuals. Unmanaged asthma has led to increased work absenteeism, preventable emergency department visits, costly hospitalizations and possibly death in severe cases. To improve asthma management in asthmatic adults in New Jersey (NJ) following a natural disaster event, this study examined whether predisposing, enabling and need factors are predictors for asthma exacerbation and asthma-related health care utilization in New Jersey. A retrospective secondary analysis of New Jersey Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (NJBRFSS) data and New Jersey Asthma Call Back Survey (NJACBS) …

Originalism Versus Living Constitutionalism: The Conceptual Structure Of The Great Debate, Lawrence B. Solum Apr 2019

Originalism Versus Living Constitutionalism: The Conceptual Structure Of The Great Debate, Lawrence B. Solum

Northwestern University Law Review

The great debate between originalism and living constitutionalism ought to focus on the merits, including normative arguments for and against various forms of each theory. Frequently, however, discussion turns to disputes about definitions and concepts. This Essay investigates the conceptual structure of the great debate. It lays out a variety of issues that arise when theorists attempt to define “originalism” and “living constitutionalism” and proposes criteria for settling definitional disputes.

Originalism And Structural Argument, Thomas B. Colby Apr 2019

Originalism And Structural Argument, Thomas B. Colby

Northwestern University Law Review

The “new originalism” is all about the text of the Constitution. Originalists insist that the whole point of originalism is to respect and follow the original meaning of the text, and that originalism derives its legitimacy from its unwavering focus on the text alone as the sole basis of higher law. And yet, many leading Supreme Court decisions in matters of great importance to conservatives—in opinions authored and joined by originalist judges, and often praised by originalist scholars—are seemingly not grounded in the constitutional text at all. They rest instead on abstract structural argument: on freestanding principles of federalism and …

Unifying Original Intent And Original Public Meaning, John O. Mcginnis, Michael B. Rappaport Apr 2019

Unifying Original Intent And Original Public Meaning, John O. Mcginnis, Michael B. Rappaport

Northwestern University Law Review

Original intent and original public meaning are generally thought to be opposing camps within originalism. Both theories assert that that the meaning of a constitutional provision was fixed at the time it was enacted. But they disagree fundamentally on the nature of interpretation. Original intent asserts that the meaning sought is that intended by the Constitution’s enactors. Original public meaning asserts that the meaning sought is that revealed by the text as reasonably understood by a well-informed reader at the time of the provision’s enactment.

In this Essay, we unite these two conflicting principles of originalism under the original methods …

Originalism And James Bradley Thayer, Steven G. Calabresi Apr 2019

Originalism And James Bradley Thayer, Steven G. Calabresi

Northwestern University Law Review

This Essay provides an originalist appraisal of Professor James Bradley Thayer’s famous book on The Origin and Scope of the American Doctrine of Constitutional Law. I critique Professor Thayer’s thesis on multiple levels, pointing out important aspects of the original understanding that the Framers would have had of the meaning and origins of the U.S. Constitution, as well as disputing Professor Thayer’s discussion of the history of American judicial review from 1790 to the publication of his book in 1893. I conclude that no person can be both an originalist and a Thayerian. The two theories contradict one another …

Originalism And A Forgotten Conflict Over Martial Law, Bernadette Meyler Apr 2019

Originalism And A Forgotten Conflict Over Martial Law, Bernadette Meyler

Northwestern University Law Review

This Symposium Essay asks what a largely forgotten conflict over habeas corpus and martial law in mid-eighteenth-century New York can tell us about originalist methods of constitutional interpretation. The episode, which involved Abraham Yates, Jr.—later a prominent Antifederalist—as well as Lord Loudoun, the commander of the British forces in America, and New York Acting Governor James De Lancey, furnishes insights into debates about martial law prior to the Founding and indicates that they may have bearing on originalist interpretations of the Suspension Clause. It also demonstrates how the British imperial context in which the American colonies were situated shaped discussions …

Beneficial Or Not: Flipped Learning In An Elementary Mathematics Classroom, Nicole Jackson Apr 2019

Beneficial Or Not: Flipped Learning In An Elementary Mathematics Classroom, Nicole Jackson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The Flipped Classroom is becoming a more frequently used instructional strategy in many secondary and collegiate classrooms. However, there are few studies done in elementary classroom settings that have implemented the flipped classroom approach to instruction. Research suggests that flipped classes have a positive impact on student learning and assessment outcomes. This study examined the impact of flipped classroom on second grade students' mathematics achievement. The study used a two group, quasi-experimental, pre-test/ post-test design. 46 second grade students in two classes of 23; one control- traditional instruction and one experimental- flipped classroom instruction, were engaged in a four-week intervention. …

Effectiveness Of Semantic Mapping In Increasing Reading Comprehension For English Language Learners, Laura M. Maccagno Apr 2019

Effectiveness Of Semantic Mapping In Increasing Reading Comprehension For English Language Learners, Laura M. Maccagno

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Students must be able to read and process academic texts, construct written documents using academic language, and understand spoken language, specifically in English (Lucas, Villegas, & Freedson-Gonzalez, 2008). In the state of California, nearly half of the students speak a language other than English at home (Edwards, Leichty, & Wilson, 2008). Several different interventions have been studied to address the issue of reading comprehension and English Language Learners. Semantic mapping has been successful because in activating student's prior knowledge and connecting to novel topics (Carrell, Pharis, & Liberto, 1989). This study explored the effects of semantic mapping on ELL students. …

Effects Of Matrix Training On Generative Language In Young Adults With Autism, Elizabeth Weissman-Young Apr 2019

Effects Of Matrix Training On Generative Language In Young Adults With Autism, Elizabeth Weissman-Young

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many young adults diagnosed with autism require thorough instruction that can be labor- and time-intensive, and a focus on generalization of learned skills must be incorporated into effective instructional techniques. Matrix training aims to address each of those considerations by providing a framework for systematic selection of targets to be taught to individuals so that instructional gains are maximized. A multiple-baseline across participants A-B-C design was used in the present study to investigate the effects of matrix training on the generalization of color and shape tacts (labels) for three young adults with autism. It was hypothesized that organizing concepts across …

Project-Based Learning With Student-Developed Models In The Ngss Curriculum, Constance Reeves Apr 2019

Project-Based Learning With Student-Developed Models In The Ngss Curriculum, Constance Reeves

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) were implemented to increase students' scientific literacy, shifting the focus from teacher-centered to student-centered learning (NGSS Lead States, 2013). One result of this shift has been the increased use of project-based learning where learners can discover their own knowledge through a series of problem-solving tasks and projects. Student-developed models (i.e., three-dimensional models) is an application of projectbased learning that has shown to increase students' science literacy in higher grades (Bell, 2010; Krajcik & Merritt, 2012). This study investigated the effectiveness of utilizing student-developed models among middle school students to create a deeper understanding of …

The Effect Of Operational Sex Ratio On The Reproductive Biology Of Two Sex-Changing Fish (Rhinogobiops Nicholsii And Lythrypnus Dalli), Stephen Pang Apr 2019

The Effect Of Operational Sex Ratio On The Reproductive Biology Of Two Sex-Changing Fish (Rhinogobiops Nicholsii And Lythrypnus Dalli), Stephen Pang

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

By targeting the largest individuals in a population, size-selective fisheries can influence the life history traits and population parameters of exploited fish stocks. For protogynous (female-to-male) hermaphrodites, this type of harvest is also sex-selective since it preferentially removes males from the population. These differences in sex-specific survival can lead to populations that are heavily female-biased. While males historically have not been considered a limiting factor when assessing the health of gonochoristic populations, modeling work suggests that reduced male abundance and skewed sex ratios could cause a concomitant decline in the reproductive output of protogynous hermaphrodite populations. This study used two …

Translanguaging Through Story: Empowering Children To Use Their Full Language Repertoire, Erin E. Flynn, Selena L. Hoy, Jessica L. Lea, Monica A. Garcia Apr 2019

Translanguaging Through Story: Empowering Children To Use Their Full Language Repertoire, Erin E. Flynn, Selena L. Hoy, Jessica L. Lea, Monica A. Garcia

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Translanguaging through story documents the progression of an emerging bilingual preschooler who draws on his full linguistic repertoire to story his experiences with others. Over the course of the school year, Diego progresses in his ability to tell a complete story in both English and Spanish. Repeated engagement in storytelling provides the support needed for Diego to continue and extend ideas in his stories and in his drawing and play. The case shows how opening the space for children to use their full language repertoire enables a child to reciprocally develop named languages like English and Spanish as he improves …

Canadian Immigration Law In The Face Of A Volatile Politics, Colin Grey, Constance Macintosh, Sarah Marsden Apr 2019

Canadian Immigration Law In The Face Of A Volatile Politics, Colin Grey, Constance Macintosh, Sarah Marsden

Dalhousie Law Journal

The genesis of this special issue was a conference of Canadian immigration law scholars at the Université du Québec à Montréal in March 2018. Conference participants sought to look back on the many changes made to Canadian immigration law during the near-decade the Stephen Harper-led Conservative government spent in power (2006–2015). Although the Conservatives did not introduce a single, revamped immigration law— the major legislation remains the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, brought in under the Jean Chrétien-led Liberals (1992–2006) in 2002—they altered parts of the law nearly beyond recognition. In this introduction, we reflect briefly on these changes; on …

Immigration, Xenophobia And Equality Rights, Donald Galloway Apr 2019

Immigration, Xenophobia And Equality Rights, Donald Galloway

Dalhousie Law Journal

One can readily identify a number of factors that, over the last ten years or so, have combined to reduce and destabilize the legal status and social standing of non-citizens who are seeking to enter or remain in Canada. Particularly conspicuous are the amendments to our refugee and citizenship laws that were introduced by the government that held power from the 2006 election until 2015, especially those harsh measures that were introduced after the government obtained a majority in the legislature in 2011.1 The changes in question were extensive and far-reaching. A shortlist of wellknown examples indicates the scope. Prompted …

Medical Inadmissibility, And Physically And Mentally Disabled Would-Be Immigrants: Canada’S Story Continues, Constance Macintosh Apr 2019

Medical Inadmissibility, And Physically And Mentally Disabled Would-Be Immigrants: Canada’S Story Continues, Constance Macintosh

Dalhousie Law Journal

In April 2018, Canada’s federal government announced that it had decided “to eliminate” the medical inadmissibility policy from our immigration regime.1 This was to bring our practices in line with contemporary Canadian values, and to engender consistency with the that Canada signed in 2007 and rati ed in 2010. The requires equality for persons with disabilities, including taking actions to enable full and effective participation and inclusion in society.3 To achieve these obligations, states must adopt legislative or other measures that implement these rights, and must repeal or revise legislation or policies which are inconsistent with the ’s obligations.

Migrant Workers, Rights, And The Rule Of Law: Responding To The Justice Gap, Sarah Marsden Apr 2019

Migrant Workers, Rights, And The Rule Of Law: Responding To The Justice Gap, Sarah Marsden

Dalhousie Law Journal

Migrant agricultural workers provide an essential and longstanding contribution to food security in Canada. Exploitation and rights shortfalls for these workers are welldocumented. On paper, they have rights on par with Canadian workers, but these rights do little to address the structure and dynamics underpinning their subordination in Canadian society. In this article, I argue that law creates a “justice gap” in the case of these workers. Law gives rights to these workers on an individual basis but also creates structural vulnerability which renders them unlikely to make use of individual remedies or compliance-based systems. Rights and protection discourse does …

Quand Voyager Mène Au Renvoi: Analyse Critique De La Législation Canadienne Sur La Perte Du Statut De Résident Permanent Liée À La Perte De L’Asile, Hélène Mayrand Apr 2019

Quand Voyager Mène Au Renvoi: Analyse Critique De La Législation Canadienne Sur La Perte Du Statut De Résident Permanent Liée À La Perte De L’Asile, Hélène Mayrand

Dalhousie Law Journal

This paper provides a critical analysis of section 46(1)(c.1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) adopted in 2012. The application of this section results in the loss of permanent resident status for protected persons who lose their refugee status under section 108 of IRPA, for example by renewing their passport and travelling to their country of origin, even for a short period of time. The combined effect of sections 46(1)(c.1) and 108 of IRPA pose major issues to Canadian protected persons. As a result, this paper explains the conditions for the application of section 46(1)(c.1) of IRPA and, …

The Mv Sun Sea: A Case Study On The Need For Greater Accountability Mechanisms At Canada Border Services Agency, Lobat Sadrehashemi

Dalhousie Law Journal

In the summer of 2010, the human rights record of Sri Lanka in the aftermath of its civil war remained dismal.1 In Canada, the Immigration and Refugee Board’s acceptance rates for refugee claims made by Tamils eeing Sri Lanka was at approximately 84 percent.2 On 13 August 2010, a cargo ship, the MV Sun Sea (Sun Sea), arrived off the coast of British Columbia carrying 492 Tamil men, women, and children who were eeing Sri Lanka. Their voyage took just over two months, under horrible conditions. One passenger had died at sea. Most, if not all, had paid …

The fatigue strength evaluation and fracture behavior for a dual phase steel-AA6061-T6 bonded joints with three different adhesives (DC-80, Betamate 120 and MP55420) are presented in this paper. Single lap shear tests were used to determine maximum shear loads, for the single lap shear testing for 5.0 mm overlap length were 2 to 3.5 times higher in comparison to the 12.7 mm overlap length specimens. The results for the strain measurement revealed that higher strain-stress were developed in the 6061-T6 aluminum alloy adherend and in all cases they were lower than the adherends yield strength. Fatigue testing was carried out …
