Too Cool, Lillian Margaret Cary
Too Cool, Lillian Margaret Cary
Stonecoast MFA Theses and Capstones
Too Cool is a collection of short stories and essays concerning a young woman’s experiences with relationships, and how they help shape the world around her. The body, foregrounded as metaphor, is threaded throughout each story and essay in the collection in the hopes that all readers will relate to the sometimes un-relatable. Both in fiction and non-fiction, these pieces explore heartbreak, friendship and the human need for connection. The stories and essays are written in a minimalist style to emphasize that what is written is just as important as the information that has been left out, and their themes …
The Eternal Waters, Heather Meeks
The Eternal Waters, Heather Meeks
Stonecoast MFA Theses and Capstones
This creative thesis is from the first book of a planned trilogy. It is the beginning third of a young adult, dark fantasy novel about a secondary, drowning world. Merfolk and humans have been at conflict for centuries over territory and resources. When an angry ocean goddess wakes after a thousand years of slumber, both societies are threatened. The races are forced to work together to solve their environmental and fantastical perils.
We see the island and water worlds though an alternating point of view. The two male point of view characters, one human and the other merfolk, become attracted …
Time Away, Loren Hart Francis
Time Away, Loren Hart Francis
Stonecoast MFA Theses and Capstones
Loren Francis planted himself squarely into his life in 2008, and looked around from there, trying to remember what the view was like from then: a time of building, music, creativity and expansiveness followed by an accident, panic attacks, and the deep rout of alcohol and drug addiction. He picks up the threads, tugging on them and letting them take him where they would back through his family tree to his Irish farmer grandparents on his mother’s side, and his British and Lebanese grandparents on his father’s. Music, addiction, family and entrepreneurism all play a salient part in his life …
Substance Use Prevention: Communication And Strategies To Reduce Alcohol, Marijuana, And E-Cigarette Use Among College Students, Emily Bauer
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
Substance use among college students impacts universities, communities and student outcomes across the United States. Based on the Monitoring the Future study (MTF), college students have a higher prevalence of past 30-day alcohol use at 63% than their non-college peers (59%) (2016). Nearly one-third of college students (32%) have had five or more drinks in a row in the past two weeks (2016). Monthly marijuana use for college students has remained steady at 22% (2016). Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use is 6.9%, which is gaining in popularity but still lower than traditional cigarettes (8.9%) (2016). There are many prevention communication strategies …

Identifying Challenges Different Provider Group Encounter In Managing Opioid Use Disorder, Chinonye Anumaka
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
The Centers for Disease and Control (CDC) describes opioid use disorder (OUD) also known as opioid addiction as the problematic pattern of opioid use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress. In 2016, about 2.1 million people were diagnosed of OUD in the US. In Maine, York County has the third highest drug overdose response and had 166 deaths occurring between 2012-2016. York County is a designated medically underserved area and has a shortage of provider workforce and limited treatment infrastructure. To further understand the challenges providers in York County encounter in managing patients with OUD, 6 focus groups was …
For Our Health: Partnerships In Maine, Joanna Morrissey
For Our Health: Partnerships In Maine, Joanna Morrissey
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
The Maine Shared Community Health Needs Assessment (Maine Shared CHNA) has created a mature network of local collaborations that come together every three years to conduct a statewide needs assessment. This capstone looks into whether there have been successful partnerships that continue collaborating on health improvement planning and implementation post CHNA. Key questions included, “Where there were successful collaborations, what was it that made them successful? What are the challenges to forming and maintaining a collaboration and how have groups overcome those challenges?” A comparative case study approach was used in order to compare and contrast two sites, each demonstrating …
A Framework For Cooperative Housing In Portland, Me: Lessons From 13 Existing Cooperative Houses In The U.S., Cyndi Gacosta
A Framework For Cooperative Housing In Portland, Me: Lessons From 13 Existing Cooperative Houses In The U.S., Cyndi Gacosta
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
Cooperative housing may be a viable and financially-sound alternative for individuals and families of low to moderate income, as Portland, Maine’s downtown area becomes gentrified raising property values to unaffordable heights. Of the 13,546 family households in Portland, 8.7% earn below $25,000, which for an average family of four $24, 2501 is considered to be in poverty, and 18.4% earn between $25,000 and $50,000. Meanwhile, 13.2% of the 16, 561 non-family households are below the poverty line, and 27.5% earn between $25,000 and $50,000 (US Census Bureau, 2014).
As it becomes increasingly difficult for low to moderate income earners …

A Comparative Analysis Of Primary Care Practice Payment Models: Practice And System Level Implications, Travis Masood
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The purpose of this capstone was to (1) assess the likely effects of various primary care practice reimbursement models on quality of care and costs, (2) assess each reimbursement model’s applicability relative to practice size, and (3) analyze each model’s practice and system level implications. This was done through the conduction of a comparative analysis of current practice reimbursement models. The questions addressed in this analysis include:
- What are the primary, practice reimbursement models currently being used?
- What are the implications of these models on quality and costs?
- Are these reimbursement models applicable in all practice types (e.g. …
Future Workforce Development In Maine: The Effects Of Sudden Demographic, Socioeconomic, And Labor Market Change, Paul L. Young
Future Workforce Development In Maine: The Effects Of Sudden Demographic, Socioeconomic, And Labor Market Change, Paul L. Young
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
The underpinnings of what is broadly called workforce development have not changed since the late 19th Century. They are still concepts primarily concerned with optimizing workers for maximal output, while attempting to instruct business owners and managers in their workplace responsibilities – responsibilities to both their organizations and their workers. Today the term ‘workforce development’ particularly addresses access and barriers to employment and necessary supports; comprising aspects of demographic shift, ethnicity, income/wealth inequality and poverty, education and training, globalization and automation, immigration, housing, social services, primary/mental healthcare and physical/mental disability, substance use, and aging. The term has come to represent …

Application Of An Intuitive, Glove-Type Remote Control With Haptic Feedback To Quadcopters, Luke M. Stacey
Application Of An Intuitive, Glove-Type Remote Control With Haptic Feedback To Quadcopters, Luke M. Stacey
Senior Honors Theses
Although remote controllers for drones, based upon a classic two-joystick architecture, are unwieldy, they still see widespread use. As a replacement, we propose a remote control with a glove-based architecture that utilizes haptic feedback from the quadcopter. The proposed controller should be far more intuitive, making drone flight easier and more intuitive. Additionally, since the pilot will have one hand free, he or she can use maps, electronics, and other aids much more straightforwardly than with a two-handed controller. While our technology is designed for drones, it also could see further usage in a wide variety of civilian and military …
The Pairing Of Trigger Point Dry Needling With Rehabilitation Techniques, Karle Kotze
The Pairing Of Trigger Point Dry Needling With Rehabilitation Techniques, Karle Kotze
Senior Honors Theses
Trigger point dry needling is a manual treatment modality used for individuals experiencing tightness, pain, and inhibited range of motion in any region of the body. Dry needling can be described as the insertion of a blunt, microfilament non-medicated needle into the skin for the purpose of targeting specific muscles, which contain tight bands known as trigger points. When the needle is inserted into the trigger point the muscle contracts, holds tight to the needle, and elicits a neural twitch response. This ultimately causes the muscle to relax, allowing for reduction in pain and improvements in range of motion. Although …
The Anxious Musician: Coping Strategies Used To Combat Music Performance Anxiety, Abigail Lockhart
The Anxious Musician: Coping Strategies Used To Combat Music Performance Anxiety, Abigail Lockhart
Senior Honors Theses
Music Performance Anxiety, or MPA, affects over 20% of musicians, regardless of age, experience, or nationality. MPA is a form of social anxiety that causes the performer great distress before and during a performance experience, often causing the performance to have a less favorable outcome. As this is such a common occurrence in the field of music, it is important for teachers and students alike to understand the basis of anxiety as well as how to deal with its effects. Unfortunately, there is no simple solution to conquer anxiety, but through the implementation of various coping strategies, musicians can have …
The Prevalence And Consequences Of Poor Posture In Children And Adolescents, Timothy Kounter
The Prevalence And Consequences Of Poor Posture In Children And Adolescents, Timothy Kounter
Senior Honors Theses
Correct posture is identified as a crucial aspect of healthy bodily functioning. The scientific community continues to discover evidence suggesting that improper sitting and standing posture results in musculoskeletal pain, degradation of ligaments, hindered respiratory functioning, and even increased feelings of negative emotions such as anxiety and depression. Whether due to limited physical capabilities, a lack of knowledge regarding the importance of physical posture, or other reasons, much of the general population consistently partakes in improper posture for increasing bouts of time despite the research. Technological advancements in particular seem to be exacerbating the situation, with the youngest and most …
The Quantum Of Suspicion Needed For An Exigent Circumstances Search, Kit Kinports
The Quantum Of Suspicion Needed For An Exigent Circumstances Search, Kit Kinports
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
For decades, the United States Supreme Court opinions articulating the standard of exigency necessary to trigger the exigent circumstances exception to the Fourth Amendment’s warrant requirement have been maddeningly opaque and confusing. Some cases require probable cause, others call for reasonable suspicion, and still, others use undefined and unhelpful terms such as “reasonable to believe” in describing how exigent the situation must be to permit the police to proceed without a warrant. Not surprisingly, the conflicting signals coming from the Supreme Court have led to disagreement in the lower courts.
To resolve this conflict and provide guidance to law enforcement …
How To Decrease The Immigration Backlog: Expand Representation And End Unnecessary Detention, Kara A. Naseef
How To Decrease The Immigration Backlog: Expand Representation And End Unnecessary Detention, Kara A. Naseef
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Note recommends federal policy reform and local implementation in order to decrease the immigration backlog and protect the rights of non-citizens in immigration proceedings. Although non-citizens hold many of the fundamental rights and freedoms enumerated in the Constitution, several core rights— including due process and the right to counsel—are not rigorously upheld in the context of immigration proceeding. By carefully regulating expanded access to representation and ending unnecessary immigration detention, the Executive Office of Immigration Review and Congress will ensure the swift administration of justice and protect non-citizens under the federal government’s jurisdiction.
