“Lotta Food, No Money”: Syracuse’S Poor Have Challenges That Are Much Bigger Than Food Access, Katie Mott Feb 2019

“Lotta Food, No Money”: Syracuse’S Poor Have Challenges That Are Much Bigger Than Food Access, Katie Mott

Population Health Research Brief Series

Food access is a central target for addressing poor health in low-income communities nationwide. A 2019 study found that the recent closure of a local family grocery store was a major concern for local elected officials and leaders of nonprofit agencies. However, people living in extreme poverty do not view food access as their most important health challenge. Finding safe and affordable housing, navigating the social welfare system, and finding employment are seen as larger concerns.

Background: This paper describes the development and validation of the Vending Evaluation for Nutrient-Density (VEND)ingaudit to comprehensively evaluate vended products based upon healthfulness, price and promotion, and machine accessibility. Methods: A novel vending nutrient-density score was created to determine the healthfulness of vended snack/beverage products. Field tested in United States colleges, VENDing audit (∑nutrient-density + 10 × % healthy products) and Support sub-scores (price + promotion + accessibility) were calculated for snack/beverage machines. Higher scores indicate more healthful vending options and supports for choosing healthfully. Nutrition Environment Measures Survey-Vending (NEMS-V) was used to validate the nutrient-density score for a sub-sample …

Diagnostic Dilemma Of Disseminated Histoplasmosis Mimicking Hemophagocytosis Lymphohistiocytosis In Patient With Rheumatoid Arthritis On Anti-Tnf Therapy: Case Report And Review Of The Literature, Saurav Suman, Aleksander Lenert Feb 2019

Diagnostic Dilemma Of Disseminated Histoplasmosis Mimicking Hemophagocytosis Lymphohistiocytosis In Patient With Rheumatoid Arthritis On Anti-Tnf Therapy: Case Report And Review Of The Literature, Saurav Suman, Aleksander Lenert

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi) have become the cornerstone for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other systemic autoimmune conditions. However, these biologic DMARDs can lead to various opportunistic infections such as viral infection, tuberculosis, and histoplasmosis. Furthermore, these biologics can also cause severe systemic inflammatory reactions known as hemophagocytosis lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) that can lead to multiorgan failure and high mortality. Due to overlapping clinical features and time-intensive microbiological culture methods, distinguishing between HLH and opportunistic infections can be challenging early in the disease course. We present a similar situation with our patient where the patient met the diagnostic criteria …

Treatment Combinations For Alzheimer’S Disease: Current And Future Pharmacotherapy Options, Jeffrey L. Cummings, Gary Tong, Clive Ballard Feb 2019

Treatment Combinations For Alzheimer’S Disease: Current And Future Pharmacotherapy Options, Jeffrey L. Cummings, Gary Tong, Clive Ballard

Integrated Health Sciences Faculty Research

Although Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the world’s leading cause of dementia and the population of patients with AD continues to grow, no new therapies have been approved in more than a decade. Many clinical trials of single-agent therapies have failed to affect disease progression or symptoms compared with placebo. The complex pathophysiology of AD may necessitate combination treatments rather than monotherapy. The goal of this narrative literature review is to describe types of combination therapy, review the current clinical evidence for combination therapy regimens (both symptomatic and disease-modifying) in the treatment of AD, describe innovative clinical trial study designs that …

Nationalism And Attitudes Towards Immigration: A Comparison On Ethnic And Civic Nationalism And The Impact On Attitudes Towards Immigrants., Maryta L. Kaber Lewis

Honors Projects

Immigration has been an important topic throughout America’s history. Studies have linked nationalism to attitudes towards immigrants, and literature has repeatedly distinguished different types of nationalism. This study looks at measures of two different types of nationalism (civic and ethnic nationalism) and tests the measures on the impact of attitudes towards immigrants. It was predicted civic and ethnic nationalism would both be predictive of negative attitudes towards immigrants, but that measures of ethnic nationalism would have greater predictive value than measures of civic nationalism. Data was used from the 2014 General Social Survey, with analysis being run using SPSS. Findings …

Multifractality Of Posture Modulates Multisensory Perception Of Stand-On-Ability, Jonathan K. Doyon, Alen Hajnal, Tyler Surber, Joseph D. Clark, Damian G. Kelty-Stephen Feb 2019

Multifractality Of Posture Modulates Multisensory Perception Of Stand-On-Ability, Jonathan K. Doyon, Alen Hajnal, Tyler Surber, Joseph D. Clark, Damian G. Kelty-Stephen

Faculty Publications

By definition, perception is a multisensory process that unfolds in time as a complex sequence of exploratory activities of the organism. In such a system perception and action are integrated, and multiple energy arrays are available simultaneously. Perception of affordances interweaves sensory and motor activities into meaningful behavior given task constraints. The present contribution offers insight into the manner in which perception and action usher the organism through competent functional apprehension of its surroundings. We propose that the tensegrity structure of the body, manifested via multifractality of exploratory bodily movements informs perception of affordances. The affordance of stand-on-ability of ground …

Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Although recent guidelines for obstructive sleep apnea recommend early postoperative use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) after endonasal skull base surgery, the time of initiation of CPAP is unclear. In this study we used a novel, previously validated cadaveric model to analyze the pressures delivered to the cranial base and evaluate the effectiveness of various repair techniques to withstand positive pressure.

METHODS: Skull base defects were surgically created in 3 fresh human cadaver heads and repaired using 3 commonly used repair techniques: (1) Surgicel™ onlay; (2) dural substitute underlay with dural sealant onlay; and (3) dural substitute underlay …

Objectives

Dental calculus is among the richest known sources of ancient DNA in the archaeological record. Although most DNA within calculus is microbial, it has been shown to contain sufficient human DNA for the targeted retrieval of whole mitochondrial genomes. Here, we explore whether calculus is also a viable substrate for whole human genome recovery using targeted enrichment techniques.

Materials and methods

Total DNA extracted from 24 paired archaeological human dentin and calculus samples was subjected to whole human genome enrichment using in‐solution hybridization capture and high‐throughput sequencing.

Results

Total DNA from calculus exceeded that of dentin in all cases, …
