Standard Oil Company Of Kentucky (Sc 3331), Manuscripts & Folklife Archives

Manuscript Collection Finding Aids

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 3331. Receipts, promotional material, and a photograph of a sign documenting the operation of the Standard Oil Company service station at the corner of College and Seventh streets in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Also includes a paper by Michael Mathews for a museum internship in which he examined the items in the collection. Because of the deteriorated condition of many of the originals, they could not be kept without causing damage to other material. A month of inventory sheets were kept from December 1922 to show a typical month’s operation for the station.

‘Some Foods Are Considered Aphrodisiac Because They Resemble Sexual Organs’: On Isabel Allende’S Aphrodite, Anke Klitzing Feb 2019

‘Some Foods Are Considered Aphrodisiac Because They Resemble Sexual Organs’: On Isabel Allende’S Aphrodite, Anke Klitzing

Articles

At the age of 56, well into her second marriage and a grandmother herself, novelist Isabel Allende decided to find out whether aphrodisiacs are all they are made out to be. She wrote Aphrodite: The Love of Food and Food of Love after extensive research into erotic literature across some centuries and continents, and this foundation of age-old wisdom also means that the book, while published in 1998, remains a timeless source of inspiration and enjoyment.

The Devaluation Of Assets In Black Neighborhoods: How Racism Robs Homeowner Of The American Dream, Andre Perry Feb 2019

The Devaluation Of Assets In Black Neighborhoods: How Racism Robs Homeowner Of The American Dream, Andre Perry

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

Homeownership lies at the heart of the American Dream, representing success, opportunity, and wealth. However, for many of its citizens, America deferred that dream. For much of the 20th century, the devaluing of black lives led to segregation and racist federal housing policy through redlining that shut out chances for black people to purchase homes and build wealth, making it more difficult to start and invest in businesses and afford college tuition. This lecture explained how much money majority-black communities are losing in the housing market stemming from racial bias, finding that owner-occupied homes in black neighborhoods are undervalued by …

Emerging Reservoir Delta‐Backwaters: Biophysical Dynamics And Riparian Biodiversity, Malia A. Volke, W. Carter Johnson, Mark D. Dixon, Michael L. Scott Feb 2019

Emerging Reservoir Delta‐Backwaters: Biophysical Dynamics And Riparian Biodiversity, Malia A. Volke, W. Carter Johnson, Mark D. Dixon, Michael L. Scott

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Deltas and backwater‐affected bottomlands are forming along tributary and mainstem confluences in reservoirs worldwide. Emergence of prograding deltas, along with related upstream hydrogeomorphic changes to river bottomlands in the backwater fluctuation zones of reservoirs, signals the development of new and dynamic riparian and wetland habitats. This study was conducted along the regulated Missouri River, USA, to examine delta‐backwater formation and describe vegetation response to its development and dynamics. Our research focused specifically on the delta‐backwater forming at the confluence of the White River tributary and Lake Francis Case reservoir. Objectives of the research were to: (1) describe and analyze the …

Natural Graphite Cuboids, Andrey Korsakov, Olga V. Rezvukhina, John Jaszczak, Dmitriy I. Rezvukhin, Denis Mikhailenko Feb 2019

Natural Graphite Cuboids, Andrey Korsakov, Olga V. Rezvukhina, John Jaszczak, Dmitriy I. Rezvukhin, Denis Mikhailenko

Department of Physics Publications

Graphite cuboids are abundant in ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks and are generally interpreted as products of partial or complete graphitization of pre-existing diamonds. The understanding of the graphite cuboid structure and its formation mechanisms is still very limited compared to nanotubes, cones, and other carbon morphologies. This paper is devoted to the natural occurrences of graphite cuboids in several metamorphic and magmatic rocks, including diamondiferous metamorphic assemblages. The studied cuboids are polycrystalline aggregates composed either of numerous smaller graphite cuboids with smooth surfaces or graphite flakes radiating from a common center. Silicates, oxides, and sulphides are abundant in all the samples …

Interaction Between Nectin-1 And The Human Natural Killer Cell Receptor Cd96., Veronica M Holmes, Carlos Maluquer De Motes, Paige T Richards, Jessenia Roldan, Arjun K Bhargava, Jordan S Orange, Claude Krummenacher

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Regulation of Natural Killer (NK) cell activity is achieved by the integration of both activating and inhibitory signals acquired at the immunological synapse with potential target cells. NK cells express paired receptors from the immunoglobulin family which share common ligands from the nectin family of adhesion molecules. The activating receptor CD226 (DNAM-1) binds to nectin-2 and CD155, which are also recognized by the inhibitory receptor TIGIT. The third receptor in this family is CD96, which is less well characterized and may have different functions in human and mouse models. Human CD96 interacts with CD155 and ligation of this receptor activates …

Building A High-Resolution Vegetation Outlook Model To Monitor Agricultural Drought For The Upper Blue Nile Basin, Ethiopia, Yared Bayissa, Tsegaye Tadesse, Getachew B. Demisse

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

To reduce the impacts of drought, developing an integrated drought monitoring tool and early warning system is crucial and more effective than the crisis management approach that is commonly used in developing countries like Ethiopia. The overarching goal of this study was to develop a higher-spatial-resolution vegetation outlook (VegOut-UBN) model that integrates multiple satellite, climatic, and biophysical input variables for the Upper Blue Nile (UBN) basin. VegOut-UBN uses current and historical observations in predicting the vegetation condition at multiple leading time steps of 1, 3, 6, and 9 dekades. VegOut-UBN was developed to predict the vegetation condition during the main …

Predicting Alzheimer’S Disease Progression Using Multi-Modal Deep Learning Approach, Garam Lee, Kwangsik Nho, Byungkon Kang, Kyung-Ah Sohn, Dokyoon Kim, Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative Feb 2019

Predicting Alzheimer’S Disease Progression Using Multi-Modal Deep Learning Approach, Garam Lee, Kwangsik Nho, Byungkon Kang, Kyung-Ah Sohn, Dokyoon Kim, Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition marked by a decline in cognitive functions with no validated disease modifying treatment. It is critical for timely treatment to detect AD in its earlier stage before clinical manifestation. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an intermediate stage between cognitively normal older adults and AD. To predict conversion from MCI to probable AD, we applied a deep learning approach, multimodal recurrent neural network. We developed an integrative framework that combines not only cross-sectional neuroimaging biomarkers at baseline but also longitudinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and cognitive performance biomarkers obtained from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging …

1915 - The Missions And Missionaries Of California, Vol. Iv, Upper California, Part Iii, General History, Zephyrin Engelhardt

Franciscan Publications

The fourth and final volume in Engelhardt's series on the general history of the California missions and generally concludes with the narrative in the early 1850s time period. The author noted that, "... a cursory view of the situation revealed such un common struggles in behalf of the Indians against military usurpation and colonist cupidity, accompanied and followed by such extraordinary misrepresentations and calumnies, that only a documentary history would satisfy the critical student and intelligent reader. ... The character of the missionaries, their religious and moral principles, their object, methods, resources, successes and reverses were examined and recorded in …

1912 - The Missions And Missionaries Of California, Vol. Ii, Upper California, Part I, General History, Zephyrin Engelhardt

Franciscan Publications

Volume II was a general accounting of the missions and missionaries in Upper California. Section I addressed the establishment and administration of the missions by Fr. Junípero Serra. Section II covered the administration of Fr. Fermín Francisco de Lasuén and Fr. Estevan Tapis. The author posited that the real object of the conquest and occupation of Alta California was not the establishment of the Catholic faith in California but rather to fund expeditions and secure the land from the Russians and others who were making expeditions in the region. Engelhardt's evidence was the fact that the Spanish government seized and …

Incorporating Financial Literacy Into The Accounting Curriculum, K C. Rakow Feb 2019

Incorporating Financial Literacy Into The Accounting Curriculum, K C. Rakow

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Financial literacy education, or the lack thereof, has received much attention in recent years. Over the past two decades, we have witnessed the dot com bubble, corporate scandals that stirred the market, and a large recession. Because many individuals turn to accountants for financial advice, it is now more important than ever for professionals to possess a strong foundation in basic financial literacy to better serve their clients. While the responsibility of financial literacy education does not lie with one institution or one individual, multiple efforts have been put in place to provide financial literacy education to the public. The …
