Mrub_3019 Casa Gene Is An Ortholog To E. Coli B2760, Kelsey Heiland, Dr. Lori Scott Feb 2019

Mrub_3019 Casa Gene Is An Ortholog To E. Coli B2760, Kelsey Heiland, Dr. Lori Scott

Meiothermus ruber Genome Analysis Project

This research is part of the Meiothermus ruber genome annotation project which aims to predict gene function with various bioinformatics tools. We investigated the function of Mrub_3019, which encodes the CasA protein involved in the multi-subunit effector complex for the CRISPR-Cas immunity system and predicted it to be an ortholog of E. coli K12 MG1655 b2760 (casA). We predicted that Mrub_3019 encodes the protein CasA, which is involved in PAM recognition of CRISPR interference pathway. Foreign DNA will bind to CasA, which signals Cas3 for helicase-mediated DNA degradation. Our hypothesis is supported by low E-values for pairwise alignment in NCBI …

Mrub_3015 Is Orthologous To The B2757 Gene Found In Escherichia Coli Coding For Casd, Ramona Collins, Dr. Lori Scott

Meiothermus ruber Genome Analysis Project

This project is part of the Meiothermus ruber genome analysis project, which uses a collection of online bioinformatics tools to predict gene function. We investigated the biological function of the gene Mrub_3015, which we hypothesize is a component of the CRISPR-Cas prokaryotic defense system. We predict that Mrub_3015 (DNA coordinates 3055550...3056245) encodes the the CRISPR-associated protein cas5, which is integral in maintaining the crRNA-DNA structure, keeping the complex from base pairing with the target phage DNA. Our hypothesis is supported by identical hits for Mrub_3015 and b2527 to the KEGG, Pfam, TIGRfam, CDD and PDB databases as well as a …

Mrub_3018 Is Orthologous To E. Coli B2759 (Casb), Kyle Parker, Dr. Lori Scott

Meiothermus ruber Genome Analysis Project

This project is part of the Meiothermus ruber genome analysis project, which uses a collection of online bioinformatics tools to predict gene function. We studied the biological activity of the Mrub_3018 gene, which we hypothesize is orthologous to E. coli gene B2759. We predicted that Mrub_3018(DNA coordinates 3057916… 3058524) encodes the protein CasB. CasB is a protein in the CRISPR CASCADE that will function as a structural protein. When the rest of the proteins form an “S” formation CasB will connect the front and back of the “S” creating a back bone for the structure. It will help bind DNA …

Trace Metals In Northern New England Streams: Evaluating The Role Of Road Salt Across Broad Spatial Scales With Synoptic Snapshots, Jessica F. Wilhelm, Daniel J. Bain, Mark B. Green, Kathleen F. Bush, William H. Mcdowell

New Hampshire EPSCoR

Mobilization of trace metals from soils to surface waters can impact both human and ecosystem health. This study resamples a water sample archive to explore the spatial pattern of streamwater total concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc and their associations with biogeochemical controls in northern New England. Road deicing appears to result in elevated trace metal concentrations, as trace metal concentrations are strongly related to sodium concentrations and are most elevated when the sodium: chloride ratio is near 1.0 (~halite). Our results are consistent with previous laboratory and field studies that indicate cation exchange as a metal mobilization …

Identifying Barriers And Supports To Breastfeeding In The Workplace Experienced By Mothers In The New Hampshire Special Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants, And Children Utilizing The Total Worker Health Framework, Eric A. Lauer, Karla Armenti, Margaret Henning, Lissa Sirois Feb 2019

Identifying Barriers And Supports To Breastfeeding In The Workplace Experienced By Mothers In The New Hampshire Special Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants, And Children Utilizing The Total Worker Health Framework, Eric A. Lauer, Karla Armenti, Margaret Henning, Lissa Sirois

Institute on Disability

Variations in the barriers and contributors to breastfeeding across industries have not been well characterized for vulnerable populations such as mothers participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Our study used the Total Worker Health Framework to characterize workplace factors acting as barriers and/or contributors to breastfeeding among women participating in the New Hampshire WIC. Surveys were collected from WIC mothers (n = 682), which asked about employment, industry, and workplace accommodation and supports related to breastfeeding in the workplace. We found workplace policy factors supporting breastfeeding (i.e., having paid maternity leave, other maternity …

Counseling Center Clinicians Experience Providing Assessments Of Risk To Self Vs Risk To Others, Jeffrey W. Pollard, David J. Disabato, Paul D. Polychronis, Mario J. Scalora Feb 2019

Counseling Center Clinicians Experience Providing Assessments Of Risk To Self Vs Risk To Others, Jeffrey W. Pollard, David J. Disabato, Paul D. Polychronis, Mario J. Scalora

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

As part of collecting information for the purpose of threat assessment and management regarding a person of concern within an institution of higher education, a threat assessment and management team or another institutional official may request that a campus counseling center conduct a risk assessment of dangerousness-to-others. This study measured counseling center clinicians’ training and experience in conducting risk assessments of dangerousness-to-others. Survey data from mental health providers practicing in counseling centers within institutions of higher education revealed that these practitioners had significantly less training and experience in assessing dangerousness-to-others as compared to the training and experience they have in …

Why Is It Difficult To Measure The Roi Of A Training Program?, Jessie Kong

The International Institute for Innovative Instruction Blog

Many organizations spend a lot of money to provide training programs to improve their performance in today’s competitive environment. Since investment in training programs has been increasing, upper management want to justify the actual costs and benefits of training programs for their various stakeholders.

1913 - The Missions And Missionaries Of California, Vol. Iii, Upper California, Part Ii, General History, Zephyrin Engelhardt

Franciscan Publications

Volume III, Section I of Engelhardt's series on California missions covers largely the period of 1812 through 1830 addressing the challenges and difficulties facing the missionaries including the scarcity of resources and labor. He described the invasion of Monterey and other ports in Upper California by Hipólte Bouchard in 1818. Section II covers the period of 1830 through 1836 and the secularization of the missions by the Mexican government during which time the missionaries held their posts until either death or the government relieved them of the responsibility of protecting the neophytes against "white rapacity" and the destruction of the …

Who's Using Act 173?, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Matthew H. Lee, Charlene A. Reid

Policy Briefs

Act 173 allows home school or private school students to enroll in academic courses in their local public school district. Passed in 2017, students to first used it for the 2017-18 school year. Despite the benefits of the Act to both parties, only 95 students across 43 schools representing 35 districts across the state of Arkansas used the Act to enroll in at least one course in their district. In this policy brief, we describe the students who used Act 173 in the 2017-18 school year, explore possible reasons why, and offer some policy implications.
