Bio-Inspired Sensing And Actuating Architectures For Feedback Control Of Civil Structures, Courtney A. Peckens, I. Cook, C. Fogg

Faculty Publications

Civil structures, such as buildings and bridges, are constantly at risk of failure due to external environmental loads, such as earthquakes or strong winds. To minimize the effects of these loads, active feedback control systems have been proposed but such systems still face numerous challenges which impede their widespread adoption. In order to overcome many of these challenges, inspiration can be drawn from the signal processing and actuating techniques employed by the biological central nervous system to develop a bio-inspired control algorithm. In this study the front-end, signal processing techniques employed by biological sensory systems, and in particular the mammalian …

Rhinoceros, School Of Theatre Arts

All Production Programs

The Illinois Wesleyan University School of Theatre Arts production of Eugène Ionesco’s savage satire Rhinoceros. Performance dates February 27 through March 4, 2018 at the Jerome Mirza Theatre, McPherson Hall. Originally set in a small French town, the play was adapted to take place on the Illinois Wesleyan campus and local community. Rhinoceros is a commentary on the human condition, as the community is suddenly besieged by one roaring citizen who finds himself turning into a rhinoceros and proceeds to trample on the social order. As with any “disease,” more citizens become infected. Written in 1959 in response to the …

Appalachian Kentucky (App KY) leads the nation in lung cancer incidence and mortality. Trace elements, such as As, have been associated with lung cancers in other regions of the country and we hypothesized that a population-based study would reveal higher trace element concentrations in App KY individuals with cancer compared to controls. Using toenail and drinking water trace element concentrations, this study investigated a possible association between lung cancer incidence and trace-element exposure in residents of this region. This population-based case-control study had 520 subjects, and 367 subjects provided toenail samples. Additionally, we explored the relationship between toenail and fingernail …

We report the observation of the rare charm decay D0 → K−πþeþe−, based on 468 fb−1 of eþe− annihilation data collected at or close to the center-of-mass energy of the ϒð4SÞ resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. We find the branching fraction in the invariant mass range 0.675 < m(e+e−) < 0.875 GeV=c2 of the electron-positron pair to be B(D0 → K−π+e+e−) = (4.0 ± 0.5 ± 0.2 ± 0.1) × 10−6, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second …

Institutional Finding Aids

The Menninger collection comprises medical realia, publications, and ephemera from the Menninger Clinic and its former owners. The collection illustrates the evolution of the science of psychiatry and psychiatric treatment as seen through the eyes of America's first family of psychiatry, the Menningers, who opened its eponymous clinic in Topeka, Kansas, in 1925. Objects in the collection date as far back as 1854 through 2003, the year the clinic and its archive moved to Houston. See more at IC 078.

Authentication Of Medical Herbals By Multispectral Analysis, Ait Kaddour Abderrahmane, Zhasur Esirgapovich Safarov, Shakhnoza Abduvakhitovna Sultanova

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

The results of the study concerning the ability of multispectral analysis to authenticate dried medicinal herbs of Uzbekistan are considered. Before obtaining the multispectral image, various medicinal plants (colored oregano grass (herbaoriganitytthianthi) and shepherd's pouch (capsellabursa-pastoris) were subjected to different drying conditions to increase the variability of the plant database and reproduce the conditions. Drying experiments were carried out in the laboratory of Tashkent state technical University. After drying, the images were collected using nineteen light-emitting diodes (405 to 1050 nm) using the Videometer Lab2 device. The image cubes were processed to extract the average spectra of the image. The …

Language And Culture As Barriers To Healthcare For Chinese Immigrants, Edwin Leung Feb 2019

Language And Culture As Barriers To Healthcare For Chinese Immigrants, Edwin Leung

University Honors Theses

Immigrants and their descendants are projected to account for 88 percent of United States population growth through 2065. Currently, immigrants make up for about 13.5 percent of the US population. In addition, 65.5 million Americans speak a language other than English at home. Language and culture are the two most significant barriers faced by immigrants seeking health care. These barriers have a significant impact on immigrants’ ability to receive quality care, make them more vulnerable to poor health outcomes. Many resources exist to help immigrants with various needs including health care. However, more effort is needed to strengthen the resources …

Identifying Models Of Obsidian Distribution In Preclassic Maya Lowlands Contexts, Sabine Tischler Feb 2019

Identifying Models Of Obsidian Distribution In Preclassic Maya Lowlands Contexts, Sabine Tischler

University Honors Theses

Obsidian was an important resource throughout Mesoamerica, and found at nearly all sites. Sources of obsidian were located in the Mexican Highlands and Guatemalan Highlands, often being transported over hundreds of kilometers for distribution. In this paper I chose four Maya sites--El Ceibal, Tikal, Xtobo, and Actun Uayazba Kab--and used three obsidian distribution models previously published by De León et al. in 2009, to infer possible distribution methods used in the Maya Lowlands. Though limitations existed the results from this proof-of-concept analysis indicate that distribution models derived for central Mexican contexts are suitable for Maya regions, and that the Maya …

Intertwined Markings: Metafiction In The Digital Age, Taylor Danielle Orgeron Feb 2019

Intertwined Markings: Metafiction In The Digital Age, Taylor Danielle Orgeron

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Intertwined Markings: Metafiction in the Digital Age maps the historical and thematic relationship between video games and contemporary works of metafiction first by detailing the intertwined histories of video games and contemporary metafiction, and then by applying new materialist and game studies methodologies to both video games and contemporary novels. Not only does the height of postmodern metafiction directly coincide with the introduction of home consoles and the golden age of arcade video games in the 1970s, but the same postmodern works considered to be canonical in metafiction studies are also those lauded as the first hypertexts in new media …

Entomology Faculty Publications

Feeding preference is critical for insect adaptation and survival. However, little is known regarding the determination of insect feeding preference, and the genetic basis is poorly understood. As a model lepidopteran insect with economic importance, the domesticated silkworm, Bombyx mori, is a well-known monophagous insect that predominantly feeds on fresh mulberry leaves. This species-specific feeding preference provides an excellent model for investigation of host-plant selection of insects, although the molecular mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains unknown. Here, we describe the gene GR66, which encodes a putative bitter gustatory receptor (GR) that is responsible for the mulberry-specific feeding preference …

Mass Shooting Films: Myths, Academic Knowledge, And Popular Criminology, Jason R. Silva Feb 2019

Mass Shooting Films: Myths, Academic Knowledge, And Popular Criminology, Jason R. Silva

Publications and Research

The author compares cinematic constructions of mass shooting perpetrators, victims, and social factors against academic knowledge and news media to determine how films perpetuate myths, reinforce academic knowledge, and act as a source of popular criminology. Cinematic findings highlight perpetrators as young, White, school shooters, and motivation types including fame seeking and defeated by society. Films construct diverse forms of victimization involving direct victims, indirect victims, and perpetrators as victims. Finally, movies emphasize sensational news media coverage as a contributing social factor. Implications of these findings suggest films blend with news media misconceptions and perpetuate myths that reinforce stereotypes of …
