On The Shoulders Of Giants: Continuing The Legacy Of Large-Scale Ecosystem Manipulation Experiments In Puerto Rico, Tana E. Wood, Grizelle González, Whendee L. Silver, Sasha C. Reed, Molly A. Cavaleri Feb 2019

On The Shoulders Of Giants: Continuing The Legacy Of Large-Scale Ecosystem Manipulation Experiments In Puerto Rico, Tana E. Wood, Grizelle González, Whendee L. Silver, Sasha C. Reed, Molly A. Cavaleri

College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science Publications

There is a long history of experimental research in the Luquillo Experimental Forest in Puerto Rico. These experiments have addressed questions about biotic thresholds, assessed why communities vary along natural gradients, and have explored forest responses to a range of both anthropogenic and non-anthropogenic disturbances. Combined, these studies cover many of the major disturbances that affect tropical forests around the world and span a wide range of topics, including the effects of forest thinning, ionizing radiation, hurricane disturbance, nitrogen deposition, drought, and global warming. These invaluable studies have greatly enhanced our understanding of tropical forest function under different disturbance regimes …

Transition State Interactions In A Promiscuous Enzyme: Sulfate And Phosphate Monoester Hydrolysis By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Arylsulfatase, Bert Van Loo, Ryan Berry, Usa Boonyuen, Mark F. Mohamed, Marko Golicnik, Alvan C. Hengge, Florian Hollfelder Feb 2019

Transition State Interactions In A Promiscuous Enzyme: Sulfate And Phosphate Monoester Hydrolysis By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Arylsulfatase, Bert Van Loo, Ryan Berry, Usa Boonyuen, Mark F. Mohamed, Marko Golicnik, Alvan C. Hengge, Florian Hollfelder

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Pseudomonas aeruginosa arylsulfatase (PAS) hydrolyses sulfate and, promiscuously, phosphate monoesters. Enzyme-catalyzed sulfate transfer is crucial to a wide variety of biological processes, but detailed studies of the mechanistic contributions to its catalysis are lacking. We present linear free energy relationships (LFERs) and kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) of PAS and active site mutants that suggest a key role for leaving group (LG) stabilization. In LFERs PASWT has a much less negative Brønsted coefficient (ßleaving group obs-Enz=-0.33) than the uncatalyzed reaction (ßleaving group obs=-1.81). This situation is diminished when cationic active site groups are exchanged for alanine. …

Radiometric Method For Determining Canopy Stomatal Conductance In Controlled Environments, Oscar Monje, Bruce Bugbee Feb 2019

Radiometric Method For Determining Canopy Stomatal Conductance In Controlled Environments, Oscar Monje, Bruce Bugbee

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Canopy stomatal conductance is a key physiological factor controlling transpiration from plant canopies, but it is extremely difficult to determine in field environments. The objective of this study was to develop a radiometric method for calculating canopy stomatal conductance for two plant species—wheat and soybean from direct measurements of bulk surface conductance to water vapor and the canopy aerodynamic conductance in controlled-environment chambers. The chamber provides constant net radiation, temperature, humidity, and ventilation rate to the plant canopy. In this method, stepwise changes in chamber CO2 alter canopy temperature, latent heat, and sensible heat fluxes simultaneously. Sensible heat and …

Development Of Image Analysis Technique For Quantification Of Recrystalization, Bersabe Morales Feb 2019

Development Of Image Analysis Technique For Quantification Of Recrystalization, Bersabe Morales

Mechanical Engineering Master's Theses

Development of metallic components with desired properties for the new generation of applications requires precise design of grain structure. One of the most effective techniques for manipulating grain structure is by controlling the recrystallization process. Although recrystallization has been studied for many years, its proper and fast quantification is still a challenge. This work develops a new image analysis technique for quantification of recrystallization, as an alternative to intensive and expensive electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis. The image analysis program run on an optical micrograph, detect recrystallized regions and report: fraction recrystallized, average grain size and distribution. To examine the …

Online Learning, Offline Outcomes: Online Course Taking And High School Student Performance, Cassandra M.D. Hart, Dan Berger, Brian Jacob, Susanna Loeb, Michael Hill

Benerd College Faculty Articles

This article uses fixed effects models to estimate differences in contemporaneous and downstream academic outcomes for students who take courses virtually and face-to-face—both for initial attempts and for credit recovery. We find that while contemporaneous outcomes are positive for virtual students in both settings, downstream outcomes vary by attempt type. For first-time course takers, virtual course taking is associated with decreases in the likelihood of taking and passing follow-on courses and in graduation readiness (based on a proxy measure). For credit recovery students, virtual course taking is associated with an increased likelihood of taking and passing follow-on courses and being …

Snapshot Of Trade Secret Developments, Elizabeth A. Rowe

William & Mary Law Review Online

As we enter the second year of the DTSA, this Article presents a snapshot of developments to assess whether there appears to be any significant doctrinal changes afoot in trade secret litigation— including civil and/or criminal—during the past year. Professors David Levine and Christopher Seaman provided some empirical data and quantitative analysis of the case filings during the first year of litigation under the DTSA (from May 2016 to May 2017). This Article complements their excellent work by taking a qualitative look at some of the substantive rulings from the following year. My assessment based on this limited sampling is …

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Earth System Models (ESMs) are essential tools for understanding and predicting global change, but they cannot explicitly resolve hillslope‐scale terrain structures that fundamentally organize water, energy, and biogeochemical stores and fluxes at subgrid scales. Here we bring together hydrologists, Critical Zone scientists, and ESM developers, to explore how hillslope structures may modulate ESM grid‐level water, energy, and biogeochemical fluxes. In contrast to the one‐dimensional (1‐D), 2‐ to 3‐mdeep, and free‐draining soil hydrology in most ESM land models, we hypothesize that 3‐D, lateral ridge‐to‐valley flow through shallow and deep paths and insolation contrasts between sunny and shady slopes are the top …

The Anchor, Volume 132.18: February 27, 2019, Hope College

The Anchor: 2019

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Can An Exercise-Based Educational And Motivational Intervention Be Durably Effective In Changing Compliance To Physical Activity And Anthropometric Risk In People With Type 2 Diabetes? A Follow-Up Study, Francesca Gallè, Jesse C. Krakauer, Nir Krakauer, Giuliana Valerio, Giorgio Liguori

Publications and Research

Aims. A nine-month motivational exercise-based intervention was previously offered to subjects with type 2 diabetes (T2D). A year after the end of the intervention, compliance to physical activity (PA) and anthropometric indices of participants were analyzed to evaluate the durability of its effects. Methods. PA levels, expressed as total energy expenditure per week, were assessed with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Changes in Body Mass Index (BMI), A Body Shape Index (ABSI), Hip Index (HI) z-scores, the relative mortality risk related to each of these measures, and a combined Anthropometric Risk Index (ARI) were also evaluated. Results. Of a …

Perspectives On University Student Engagement In England, Roxanne Duvivier, Monica Ratliff, Brigette Gardner, Lauren Ouwerkerk, Josua Scacco

New York Journal of Student Affairs

While national quantitative research has been conducted that measured satisfaction and engagement of undergraduate students in England, fewer qualitative studies exist that focused on the needs of students and their perceptions of the totality of their university experiences. This study examined the multifaceted phenomena of student engagement in a non-US setting to explore student attitudes and needs that contribute to retention and engaged decisions at an English university. Findings suggested that US research has applicability in the English university context. As is the case in the US, English student engagement in academics and societies was affected by factors associated with …
