A Hybrid Experimental‐Computational Modeling Framework For Cardiovascular Device Testing, Ethan Kung, Masoud Farahmand, Akash Gupta Mar 2019

A Hybrid Experimental‐Computational Modeling Framework For Cardiovascular Device Testing, Ethan Kung, Masoud Farahmand, Akash Gupta

Publications

Significant advances in biomedical science often leverage powerful computational and experimental modeling platforms. We present a framework named physiology simulation coupled experiment (“PSCOPE”) that can capitalize on the strengths of both types of platforms in a single hybrid model. PSCOPE uses an iterative method to couple an in vitro mock circuit to a lumped-parameter numerical simulation of physiology, obtaining closed-loop feedback between the two. We first compared the results of Fontan graft obstruction scenarios modeled using both PSCOPE and an established multiscale computational fluid dynamics method; the normalized root-mean-square error values of important physiologic parameters were between 0.1% and 2.1%, …

A Road Taken: A Cataloging Team Becomes A Metadata Team, Scott M. Dutkiewicz, Jessica L. Serrao Mar 2019

A Road Taken: A Cataloging Team Becomes A Metadata Team, Scott M. Dutkiewicz, Jessica L. Serrao

Publications

This chapter describes the issues confronted along the “road taken” by a technical services team as it transitioned from traditional monographic cataloging to metadata for digital collections. To serve changing user needs, the team shifted focus to providing quality metadata. Along this road, the team confronted and welcomed a number of changes. These included a unit merger, off-site relocation, shedding the cataloging role, learning how to produce metadata, identifying areas for growth with a library-wide Metadata Summit, working with new stakeholders, and managing new staff and faculty. The chapter concludes with the lessons the team learned and its prospects.

Air Quality Modelling For Ireland, Aoife Donnelly, Bruce Misstear, Brian Broderick Mar 2019

Air Quality Modelling For Ireland, Aoife Donnelly, Bruce Misstear, Brian Broderick

Reports

Air pollution is the primary environmental cause of premature death in the EU (European Commission, 2013) and the most problematic pollutants across Europe have consistently been oxides of nitrogen (e.g. nitrogen dioxide (NO2)), particulate matter (e.g. PM10, PM2.5) and ozone (O3). While measurements form an important aspect of air quality assessment, on their own they are unlikely to be sufficient to provide an accurate spatial and temporal description of the pollutant concentrations for exposure assessment and moreover they cannot provide information regarding future air quality. Annex XVI of 2008/50/EC requires member states …

Decision Making Under General Set Uncertainty: Additivity Approach, Srialekya Edupalli, Vladik Kreinovich Mar 2019

Decision Making Under General Set Uncertainty: Additivity Approach, Srialekya Edupalli, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we need to make a decision under interval or set uncertainty: e.g., we need to decide how much we are willing to pay for an option that will bring us between $10 and $40, i.e., for which the set of possible gains is the interval S = [10,40]. To make such decisions, researcher have used the idea of additivity: that if have two independent options, then the price we pay for both should be equal to the sum of the prices that we pay for each of these options. It is known that this requirement enables …

Planning For A Corpus Of Continuous Ratings Of Spoken Dialog Quality, Nigel G. Ward Mar 2019

Planning For A Corpus Of Continuous Ratings Of Spoken Dialog Quality, Nigel G. Ward

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

While many aspects of speech processing, including speech recognition and speech synthesis, have seen enormous advances over the past few years, advances in dialog have been more modest. This difference is largely attributable to the lack of resources that can support machine learning of dialog models and dialog phenomena. The research community accordingly needs a corpus of spoken dialogs with quality annotations every 100 milliseconds or so. We envisage a large and diverse collection: on the order of fifty hours of data, representing hundreds of speakers and many genres, with every instant labeled for interaction quality by one or more …

Best Approach To Treating Distal Radius Fractures, Ashley Godawski, Caceti Dobrowolski Mar 2019

Best Approach To Treating Distal Radius Fractures, Ashley Godawski, Caceti Dobrowolski

Occupational Therapy Graduate Student Evidenced-Based Research Reviews

Background Information:

Distal Radius Fractures (wrist) are commonly caused by falling on an outstretched hand. The two treatments for distal radius fractures are surgical intervention through Open Reduction Internal Fixation (ORIF) or conservative non-surgical treatment. The ORIF surgery includes reducing the broken bone and then setting it back in place with screws, plates, rods or pins. Conservative treatment includes casting or immobilization of the wrist in order to promote natural healing.

The Effects Of A Driving Simulator On Driving-Related Skills Necessary For Adl And Iadl Function, Rebecca Pope, Haley Szpara

Occupational Therapy Graduate Student Evidenced-Based Research Reviews

Background

Returning to driving is often a goal for an individual following a neurological impairment. Critical skills for success in returning to driving include intact cognition, visual, and visual-perceptual skills which are skills that are commonly compromised in individuals who have had a neurological accident. In addition, these skills are necessary for other areas of instrumental activities of daily living (IADLS), as well as activities of daily living road driving performance (Crotty & George, 2009). Emerging evidence has shown the use of driving simulator training as an intervention to increase and the generalizability this may have on ADL function and …

Place Matters Continuum Of Care Report, Mara Sanchez Phd, Erica King Msw

Maine Statistical Analysis Center

In 2019 and beyond, Maine policymakers will make decisions about how to support Maine’s youth, families, and communities. Youth involved in the justice or child welfare system that are transitioning to adulthood (ages 14 to 25) are a particularly vulnerable and underserved population. Approximately fourteen thousand young people in Maine between the ages of 16 and 24 are disconnected from school and unemployed, and roughly three thousand of these youth will face homelessness or will return to communities from outof- home treatment, confinement, or multi-system involvement ranging from days to years. At eighteen, some face a chasm of service availability …

Recent Efforts To Elucidate The Scientific Validity Of Animal-Based Drug Tests By The Pharmaceutical Industry, Pro-Testing Lobby Groups, And Animal Welfare Organisations, Jarrod Bailey

Validation of Animal Experimentation Collection

Background: Even after several decades of human drug development, there remains an absence of published, substantial, comprehensive data to validate the use of animals in preclinical drug testing, and to point to their predictive nature with regard to human safety/toxicity and efficacy. Two recent papers, authored by pharmaceutical industry scientists, added to the few substantive publications that exist. In this brief article, we discuss both these papers, as well as our own series of three papers on the subject, and also various views and criticisms of lobby groups that advocate the animal testing of new drugs.

Crispr-Mediated Gene Editing: Scientific And Ethical Issues, Jarrod Bailey

Genetics Collection

There remains substantial evidence to warrant great concern over the poor efficiency and specificity of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-mediated genetic modification (GM), despite relatively minor improvements compared to other GM methods. These issues cause persistent, adverse, ethical, and scientific consequences for GM animals, which may never be sufficiently resolvable.

Salmonid Species Diversity Predicts Salmon Consumption By Terrestrial Wildlife, Christina N. Service, Andrew N. Bateman, Megan S. Adams, Kyle A. Artelle, Thomas E. Reimchen, Paul C. Paquet, Chris T. Darimont

Habitat and Trophic Ecology Collection

1. Resource waves—spatial variation in resource phenology that extends feeding opportunities for mobile consumers—can affect the behaviour and productivity of recipient populations. Interspecific diversity among Pacific salmon species (Oncorhynchus spp.) creates staggered spawning events across space and time, thereby prolonging availability to terrestrial wildlife.

2. We sought to understand how such variation might influence consumption by terrestrial predators compared with resource abundance and intra- and interspecific competition.

3. Using stable isotope analysis, we investigated how the proportion of salmon in the annual diet of male black bears (Ursus americanus; n = 405) varies with species diversity and density of spawning …

Yidbrik: Historical, Practical, Relational, And Theological Concepts And Challenges In Jewish-Christian Relations, Jonathan Esterman Mar 2019

Yidbrik: Historical, Practical, Relational, And Theological Concepts And Challenges In Jewish-Christian Relations, Jonathan Esterman

Doctor of Ministry

Historically and culturally, there is a deep divide of misunderstanding and feeling of mistrust between the Jewish people1 and the religious organization of Christianity and its adherents. This rift is directly responsible for a significant portion of the past two thousand years of Jewish suffering and Christian misunderstanding as well as the current divide between the two faith traditions.2 Contemporary efforts to missionize Jewish individuals as part of the Great Commission has only further hindered relationships deeper than a superficial secular connection. In the early life of Christianity, however, there were more similarities than differences to the point where one …

Long-Term Beta-Blocker Therapy Safe And Effective In Reducing Cardiomyopathy In Patients Who Actively Abuse Stimulant Drugs, Jessica Bugbee

Physician Assistant Capstones

If anything was learned since Breaking Bad, it’s that the devastation due to the methamphetamine problem does not spare a single person. Similarly, cocaine abuse does not have benign effects on the heart. Methamphetamine and cocaine abuse are increasing worldwide including use among the younger population; making recognition of the cardiovascular risks more important than ever.

If long-term BBT can decrease the incidence of stimulant-related cardiovascular complications commonly experienced in methamphetamine and cocaine users, then it may be possible to decrease unnecessary admissions to the hospital and ICU. Therefore, in patients who actively engage in stimulant drug abuse, how does …

In Individuals That Are Genetically Predisposed To Colon Cancer, How Does High Intake Of Fish Oil Compared To Low Fish Oil Intake Affect The Risk Of Developing Colon Cancer, Tatiana Mudrenko

Physician Assistant Capstones

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most common cancer type in the United States and the third world wide.1-2 Mortality rates have decreased over the years due to early screening and improvements in treatment; however, the total cancer deaths worldwide are expected to rise. The predicted increase in global CRC deaths is explained not only by population growth and aging but also by risk factors such as lifestyle.3 Even though colorectal cancer can be genetically inherited, major evidence shows that dietary factors can modify the risk of developing it. Implementing appropriate diet and early screening in individuals who are genetically …
