Minor-Mode Sonata-Form Dynamics In Haydn's String Quartets, Matthew J. Hall Mar 2019

Minor-Mode Sonata-Form Dynamics In Haydn's String Quartets, Matthew J. Hall

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

The predominance of major-mode works in the repertoire corresponds with the view that minor-mode works are exceptions to a major-mode norm. For example, Charles Rosen’s Sonata Forms, James Hepokoski and Warren Darcy’s Sonata Theory, and William Caplin’s Classical Form all theorize from the perspective of a major-mode default. Although certain canonical minor-mode works have received sustained scholarly attention, minor-mode sonata style in general is less often studied. Despite their relatively fewer numbers, minor-mode works comprise a substantial corpus. Among the string quartets of Joseph Haydn, the minor mode is represented in every opus beginning with Op. 9; even …

Making Personal Goals More Achievable, Adam Carlson Mar 2019

Making Personal Goals More Achievable, Adam Carlson

ENGS 86 Independent Projects (AB Students)

Achieving long-term goals has a large impact on one’s life. However, this success requires focused, consistent work even when the achievement is not imminent. Presently, we turn to calendars and task management applications for help. But, these tools quickly become cluttered making it difficult to visualize progress. I created an iPhone application which emphasizes long-term thinking. First-time users must provide three long-term goals with deadlines. Then, they have the opportunity to add smaller, to-do items to their week. For each item, the user must specify a long-term goal to which it is associated. The long-term association ensures users stay focused.

The Impact Of Maryland’S Global Reimbursement System On Patient Satisfaction: A One-Way Analysis Of Variance, Richard Blanco-Topping Mar 2019

The Impact Of Maryland’S Global Reimbursement System On Patient Satisfaction: A One-Way Analysis Of Variance, Richard Blanco-Topping

Faculty Dissertations

Abstract The quality and cost of health care services have been of significant concern for many years for policymakers and healthcare leaders. New payment models such as the global payment model and the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey instrument were introduced to assess and improve the national healthcare system. However, the impact of the global payment model on patient satisfaction of care remains limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate if Maryland Global Payment Model impacts patient ratings of hospital care during and after the implementation of the model. The primary research question …

Dynamic Credit Default Swap Curves In A Network Topology, Xiu Xu, Cathy Yi-Hsuan Chen, Wolfgang Karl Härdle Mar 2019

Dynamic Credit Default Swap Curves In A Network Topology, Xiu Xu, Cathy Yi-Hsuan Chen, Wolfgang Karl Härdle

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

Systemically important banks are connected and their default probabilities have dynamic dependencies. An extraction of default factors from cross-sectional credit default swap (CDS) curves allows us to analyze the shape and the dynamics of default probabilities. In extending the Dynamic Nelson Siegel (DNS) model to an across firm multivariate setting, and employing the generalized variance decomposition of Diebold and Yilmaz [On the network topology of variance decompositions: Measuring the connectedness of financial firms. J. Econom., 2014, 182(1), 119–134], we are able to establish a DNS network topology. Its geometry yields a platform to analyze the interconnectedness of long-, middle- and …

Current Normative Data For Grip, Pinch, And Fine Motor Control For Pediatrics And Adults, Jackie Kaiser, Kyle Richards Mar 2019

Current Normative Data For Grip, Pinch, And Fine Motor Control For Pediatrics And Adults, Jackie Kaiser, Kyle Richards

Occupational Therapy Graduate Student Evidenced-Based Research Reviews

Background:

Fine motor control can be measured with the Functional Dexterity Test (FDT) and the 9 Hole Peg Test (Aaron & Jansen, 2003; Oxford Grice et al., 2003). Grip and pinch strength are measured with a dynamometer and pinch gauge respectively, which are tools that measure strength in both pounds and kilograms (McQuiddy, Scheerer, Lavalley, McGarth, & Lin, 2015). The normative data for these tools from the mid-1980s is still being used in practice today and that needs to change.

Roadmap On Biological Pathways For Electronic Nanofabrication And Materials, Reza M. Zadegan Mar 2019

Roadmap On Biological Pathways For Electronic Nanofabrication And Materials, Reza M. Zadegan

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Conventional microchip fabrication is energy and resource intensive. Thus, the discovery of new manufacturing approaches that reduce these expenditures would be highly beneficial to the semiconductor industry. In comparison, living systems construct complex nanometer-scale structures with high yields and low energy utilization. Combining the capabilities of living systems with synthetic DNA-/protein-based self-assembly may offer intriguing potential for revolutionizing the synthesis of complex sub-10 nm information processing architectures. The successful discovery of new biologically based paradigms would not only help extend the current semiconductor technology roadmap, but also offer additional potential growth areas in biology, medicine, agriculture and sustainability for the …

2019 State-Of-The-Science Of Dispersants And Dispersed Oil (Ddo) In U.S. Arctic Waters: Public Health And Food Safety, Coastal Response Research Center

Coastal Response Research Center

Chemical dispersants were employed on an unprecedented scale during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and could be a response option should a large spill occur in Arctic waters. The use of dispersants in response to that spill raised concerns regarding the need for chemical dispersants, the fate of the oil and dispersants, and their potential impacts on human health and the environment. Concerns remain that would be more evident in the Arctic, where the remoteness and harsh environmental conditions would make a response to any oil spill very difficult. An outcome of a 2013 Arctic …

Ophthalmology and Visual Science Faculty Publications

Purpose: Chronic ocular pain is poorly understood and difficult to manage. We developed a murine model of corneal surface injury (CSI)–induced chronic ocular neuropathic pain. The study focuses on changes in corneal nerve morphology and associated short- and long-term pain-like behavior after CSI.

Methods: CSI was induced in mice by local application of an alkali solution (0.75 N NaOH). Corneal nerve architecture, morphology, density, and length were studied. Eye-wiping was evaluated before and after CSI in response to hypertonic saline (2 M NaCl). Naltrexone (NTX) or Naloxone-methiodide (NLX-me), opioid receptor antagonists, were given subcutaneously (s.c., 3 mg/kg) or …
