Informative Group Testing For Multiplex Assays, Christopher R. Bilder, Joshua M. Tebbs, Christopher S. Mcmahan Mar 2019

Informative Group Testing For Multiplex Assays, Christopher R. Bilder, Joshua M. Tebbs, Christopher S. Mcmahan

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Infectious disease testing frequently takes advantage of two tools–group testing and multiplex assays–to make testing timely and cost effective. Until the work of Tebbs et al. (2013) and Hou et al. (2017), there was no research available to understand how best to apply these tools simultaneously. This recent work focused on applications where each individual is considered to be identical in terms of the probability of disease. However, risk-factor information, such as past behavior and presence of symptoms, is very often available on each individual to allow one to estimate individual-specific probabilities. The purpose of our paper is to propose …

Solid State Proton Spin-Lattice Relaxation In Polycrystalline Methylphenanthrenes. Iv. 1,4-Dimethylphenanthrene, Peter A. Beckmann Mar 2019

Solid State Proton Spin-Lattice Relaxation In Polycrystalline Methylphenanthrenes. Iv. 1,4-Dimethylphenanthrene, Peter A. Beckmann

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

We present and model the NMR frequency (8.50, 22.5, and 53.0 MHz) and temperature (97–300 K) dependence of the solid state 1H spin-lattice relaxation process in polycrystalline 1,4-dimethylphenanthrene. The solid state gives rise to a situation where methyl group rotation is the only motion on the NMR time scale and the relaxation rates due to the rotations of the 1- and 4-methyl groups are conveniently well-separated in temperature. At these low NMR frequencies, both the slow- and fast-motion limits are observed for the rotation of both methyl groups which allows for a more stringent test of the models. The relaxation …

Cs The Day: The Trading Card Game, Wendi Sierra Mar 2019

Cs The Day: The Trading Card Game, Wendi Sierra

English Faculty/Staff Publications

In many ways, Cs the Day: The Card Game is an ode both to academia, which is imperfect but can at times be wonderful, and to my personal passion and research interest, which has helped me to find a place within this profession. It is also, as is discussed in more detail below, an extension of an existing game, and as such embodies many of the same goals and principles of that game. Thus, designing Cs the Day: The Card Game required careful attention to how the mechanics and narrative reflect both the profession and the original game. There are …

Addressing Occupational Deprivation In Refugees: A Scoping Review, Shan M. Siddiqui, Eman Said, Briana Hanna, Natasha H. Patel, Evelyn L. Gonzalez, Savanna L. Garrett, Claudia L. Hilton, Karen Aranha

Journal of Refugee & Global Health

In 2015, over 21 million refugees were displaced worldwide. A significant issue faced by this population is occupational deprivation – being deprived of engagement in meaningful activities. Despite this being a global problem, information on interventions that address occupational deprivation has not been synthesized. To bridge this gap, we conducted a scoping review to examine interventions that can be used when working with refugees who face this issue. For our methods, we used a five-step framework and reviewed interventions using the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. Initial searches yielded 191 studies, 7 of which were retained. Community-based …

Topological Scoring Of Protein Interaction Networks, Mihaela E. Sardiu, Joshua M. Gilmore, Brad D. Groppe, Arnob Dutta, Laurence Florens, Michael P. Washburn

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

It remains a significant challenge to define individual protein associations within networks where an individual protein can directly interact with other proteins and/or be part of large complexes, which contain functional modules. Here we demonstrate the topological scoring (TopS) algorithm for the analysis of quantitative proteomic datasets from affinity purifications. Data is analyzed in a parallel fashion where a prey protein is scored in an individual affinity purification by aggregating information from the entire dataset. Topological scores span a broad range of values indicating the enrichment of an individual protein in every bait protein purification. TopS is applied to interaction …

© 2018 The Authors This study examines the initiation of two intracloud (IC) and two cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flashes using electric field change (FA) sensors and VHF (LogRF) sensors located at seven sites near Oxford, Mississippi, USA. For each flash the initiating event caused a pulse in the LogRF data and started an Initial E-Change (IEC) in the FA data. The initiating LogRF pulses had powers ~1 μs. Numerous LogRF pulses occurred during each IEC; these pulses had durations ≤3 μs. Fewer FA pulses occurred during each IEC; these pulses had durations of ≤7 μs. During each IEC, a few …

The Waiting Game: How States Can Solve The Organ-Donation Crisis, Meredith M. Havekost Mar 2019

The Waiting Game: How States Can Solve The Organ-Donation Crisis, Meredith M. Havekost

Vanderbilt Law Review

Thousands of patients in the United States live in limbo every day waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant, and the gap between the number of people who need a transplant and the number of available organs widens every year. Every state currently allows individuals to unilaterally indicate their intent to donate their organs upon death, but in practice, family members are frequently allowed to override the express intentions of decedents. In addition, the current U.S. "opt-in" system fails to reach its full potential because many eligible decedents never express their desires to become or not to become organ donors, and …

Physical Activity And Cognitive Function Among Older Adults With An Elevated Gamma Gap, Emily Frith, Paul D. Loprinzi

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2018 The Author(s) Published by S. Karger AG, Basel. Objective: An elevated gamma gap is indicative of high serum concentrations of globulin proteins, some of which elicit acute inflammatory responses. An impaired cognitive function has been linked to central and peripheral inflammation, while exercise is associated with protective, anti-inflammatory benefits. In this study, we evaluated whether the gamma gap is associated with cognitive function among older adults and whether physical activity is favorably associated with cognitive function among those with an elevated gamma gap. Materials and Methods: Data from the 1999-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were …

Muslim Victimization In The Contemporary Us: Clarifying The Racialization Thesis, Sarah Beth Kaufman, Hanna Niner Mar 2019

Muslim Victimization In The Contemporary Us: Clarifying The Racialization Thesis, Sarah Beth Kaufman, Hanna Niner

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

This article draws on in-depth, qualitative interviews with Muslim and non-Muslim Americans in 2016 to specify how Muslim “racialization” is shaped by the racial politics of the United States (US). Anti-Muslim bias is not experienced by religious Muslims as a whole, but by people whose bodies are read to be affiliated with the Islamic religion—often erroneously—because of their perceived racial characteristics. Self-identified black, white, and Hispanic Muslims with no visible markers of their religion do not experience anti-Muslim harassment, while non-Muslim Christians, Hindus, and Sikhs who embody an imagined “Muslim look,” cope with fear and aggression from strangers on a …

Sravan Kumar, Nicolas S. Dwarica, Alexander Hüther, Zhifeng Chen, Clemente S. Guzman Iv, Emily R. Hand, William C. Moore, Robert M. Rioux, Lars C. Grabow, Bert D. Chandler

Chemistry Faculty Research

We report a quantitative kinetic evaluation and study of support effects for partial alkyne hydrogenation using oleylaminecapped Au colloids as catalyst precursors. The amine capping agents can be removed under reducing conditions, generating supported Au nanoparticles of ~2.5 nm in diameter. The catalysts showed high alkene selectivity (>90%) at all conversions during alkyne partial hydrogenation. Catalytic activity, observed rate constants, and apparent activation energies (25– 40 kJ/mol) were similar for all Au catalysts, indicating support effects are relatively small. Alkyne adsorption, probed with FTIR and DFT, showed adsorption on the support was associated with hydrogen-bonding interactions. DFT calculations indicate …

Indicators For Prolonged Recovery From Concussion In Adolescents, Nicola Juri

Physician Assistant Capstones

Each year, an estimated 3.8 million concussions occur in the United States related to sports and recreational activity.1 Great gains have been made in the management of concussion, putting it in the spotlight as a leading public health crisis. The highest percentage of sports-related concussion occurs in those under the age of 21.1 From initial time of injury to return to activity, the common definition of clinical recovery, is approximately 2 weeks for adults and 4 weeks in children under the age of 18. This is in stark contrast to the previously held understanding that all concussions, age independent, were …

Can Technological Advances, And Better Perioperative Care, Shift Total Knee Arthroplasty To A Younger Age Range?, Shaun M. Ring

Physician Assistant Capstones

Some of the advances could increase the life span of knee prosthetic implants to 20-25 years. Typical life span for most knee replacements is speculated to be around 15-20 years. This raises the question, that with the increase in technology, why is total knee arthroplasty not able to be performed in a younger population, 40-55 years of age, on a regular basis? It is frequently assumed that performing a TKA is not medically responsible in a patient younger than 55-60 years old, because of the possibility that they could need a costly revision in the future. Most of the studies, …

For Quantum And Reversible Computing, Intervals Are More Appropriate Than General Sets, And Fuzzy Numbers Than General Fuzzy Sets, Oscar Galindo, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Need for faster and faster computing necessitates going down to quantum level -- which means involving quantum computing. One of the important features of quantum computing is that it is reversible. Reversibility is also important as a way to decrease processor heating and thus, enable us to place more computing units in the same volume. In this paper, we argue that from this viewpoint, interval uncertainty is more appropriate than the more general set uncertainty -- and, similarly, that fuzzy numbers (for which all alpha-cuts are intervals) are more appropriate than more general fuzzy sets. We also explain why intervals …

Which Fourier Components Are Most Informative: General Idea And Case Studies, Julio Urenda, Nancy Avila, Nelly Gordillo, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, the information comes not in terms of the original image or signal, but in terms of its Fourier transform. To detect complex features based on this information, it is often necessary to use machine learning. In the Fourier transform, usually, there are many components, and it is not easy to use all of them in machine learning. So, we need to select the most informative components. In this paper, we provide general recommendations on how to select such components. We also show that these recommendations are in good accordance with two examples: the structure of the …

Scale-Invariance-Based Pre-Processing Drastically Improves Neural Network Learning: Case Study Of Diagnosing Lung Dysfunction In Children, Nancy Avila, Julio Urenda, Nelly Gordillo, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To adequately treat different types of lung dysfunctions in children, it is important to properly diagnose the corresponding dysfunction, and this is not an easy task. Neural networks have been trained to perform this diagnosis, but they are not perfect in diagnostics: their success rate is 60%. In this paper, we show that by selecting an appropriate invariance-based pre-processing, we can drastically improve the diagnostic success, to 100% for diagnosing the presence of a lung dysfunction.

Silver Effect In Regiodivergent Gold-Catalyzed Hydroaminations, Marcos Veguillas, Georgina M. Rosair, Magnus Bebbington, Ai Lan Lee

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We report a silver-induced switching of regioselectivity in gold-catalyzed reactions, and we provide mechanistic evidence to suggest a true "silver effect": that is, one that is implicated in the catalytic process itself, via σ-gold π-silver acetylides. These results are of significance because they clearly show that the use of silver as halide abstractors in gold-catalyzed reactions may result in "silver effects" when terminal alkyne substrates are involved.
