© 2019 ABRF. Methionine oxidation plays a critical role in many processes of biologic and biomedical importance, including cellular redox responses and stability of protein pharmaceuticals. Bottom-up methods for analysis of methionine oxidation can suffer from incomplete sequence coverage, as well as an inability to readily detect correlated oxidation between 2 or more methionines. However, the methodology for quantifying protein oxidation in top-down analyses is lacking. Previous work has shown that electron transfer dissociation (ETD)–based tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) fragmentation offers accurate and precise quantification of amino acid oxidation in peptides, even in complex samples. However, the ability of ETD-based …

© 2019, The Author(s). The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) collaboration seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of ionization cooling, the technique by which it is proposed to cool the muon beam at a future neutrino factory or muon collider. The emittance is measured from an ensemble of muons assembled from those that pass through the experiment. A pure muon ensemble is selected using a particle-identification system that can reject efficiently both pions and electrons. The position and momentum of each muon are measured using a high-precision scintillating-fibre tracker in a 4 T solenoidal magnetic field. This paper presents the techniques …

© 2018 Elsevier B.V. The main objective of a series of our researches is to develop a novel acoustic-based method for activation of biochar. This study investigates the capability of biochar in adsorbing Ni(II) as a hazardous contaminant and aims at enhancing its adsorption capacity by the addition of extra nitrogen and most probably phosphorous and oxygen containing sites using an ultrasono-chemical modification mechanism. To reach this objective, biochar physically modified by low-frequency ultrasound waves (USB) was chemically treated by phosphoric acid (H3PO4) and then functionalized by urea (CO(NH2)2). Cavitation induced by ultrasound waves exfoliates and breaks apart the regular …

Automated Microstructure Analysis Of Large Regions, Cheng Xu
Automated Microstructure Analysis Of Large Regions, Cheng Xu
Graduate Theses - Mechanical Engineering
The mechanical and physical properties of materials are often related to grain size. To accurately measure grain size over a large region, it is imperative to acquire high-resolution image data for each of the grains and detect all of them. Although there is an existing technique, Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), that can achieve the objective, it is an expensive technique which requires a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Therefore, it is beneficial to develop a less expensive technique that can use traditional and cheap equipment, such as an optical microscope. This thesis is dedicated to making an optical microscope automatically scan …

Municipal biosolids are commonly applied to agricultural lands as fertilizer, but this also poses potential risks to groundwater and surface water quality from constituents that may be mobilized during storm events. In the present study, an existing model, Groundwater Loading Effects of Agricultural Management Systems (GLEAMS), is modified to predict the fate and transport of organic contaminants from land-applied biosolids, primarily via addition of a labile biosolids organic carbon phase distinct from soil organic carbon. While capable of simulating contaminant transport in runoff and via percolation, only the runoff portion of the model was able to be calibrated using existing …

Organizational Learning In Libraries At For-Profit Colleges And Universities: A Mixed-Methods Analysis, Julie Evener
Other Topics
Despite successful application of organizational learning to enhance services in academic libraries, little is known about organizational learning in libraries of for-profit colleges and universities (FPCUs). A quantitative online survey, followed by qualitative interviews, served to assess and explore the use of organizational learning in libraries at FPCUs. Data reflected medium to high levels of organizational learning in the libraries studied, as well as a negative relationship between organizational learning and number of students enrolled. Common themes in the interview responses included external pressures from the FPCUs making it more difficult to implement organizational learning, and the importance of communication.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s song “Despacito” shattered numerous records to become one of the most successful Spanish-language songs in U.S. pop music history. Declared 2017’s “Song of the Summer,” the “Despacito” remix featuring Justin Bieber prompted discussions about the racial dynamics of crossover for Latin music and Latina/o artists. However, little attention was paid to the ways that “Despacito”’s success in the Latin music market demonstrated similar racial dynamics within Latin music, especially in the song’s engagement with reggaeton, a genre originally associated with Black and working-class communities. This paper examines the racial politics that surround “Despacito”’s success in …

The electron transport systems in mitochondria of many organisms contain alternative respiratory enzymes distinct from those of the canonical respiratory system depicted in textbooks. Two of these enzymes, the alternative NADH dehydrogenase and the alternative oxidase, were of interest to a limited circle of researchers until they were envisioned as gene therapy tools for mitochondrial disease treatment. Recently, these enzymes were discovered in several animals. Here, we analyse the functioning of alternative NADH dehydrogenases and oxidases in different organisms. We propose that both enzymes ensure bioenergetic and metabolic flexibility during environmental transitions or other conditions which may compromise the operation …

The problem addressed in this dissertation has three dimensions: imminent global catastrophe, the elitist tyranny responsible for it, and Christian detachment from both.
The purpose of this dissertation is not to solve the problem in any of those three dimensions. The aim is threefold—to deconstructively demonstrate the reality of the problem; to expose its historical roots in philosophy, science, and theology; and to offer a case-study example of how it the problem may be clearly viewed and understood for the purposes of 21st century Christian life. The case study is not simple or easy, but neither is the problem it …

In this proof-of-concept paper, we apply a bulk-mass-modeling method using observations from the NASA Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) instrument for retrieving particulate matter (PM) concentration over the contiguous United States (CONUS) over a 2-year period (2008–2009). Different from previous approaches that rely on empirical relationships between aerosol optical depth (AOD) and PM2.5 (PM with particle diameters less than 2.5 µm), for the first time, we derive PM2.5 concentrations, during both daytime and nighttime, from near-surface CALIOP aerosol extinction retrievals using bulk mass extinction coefficients and model-based hygroscopicity. Preliminary results from this 2-year study conducted over the CONUS show …

Intersectionality is a term coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989. Crenshaw, a scholar of law, critical race theory, and Black feminist legal theory, used intersectionality to explain the experiences of Black women who―because of the intersection race, gender, and class―are exposed to exponential and interlocking forms of marginalization and oppression often rendering them invisible.

Approximate Solutions To Lane-Emden Equation For Stellar Configuration, Fazal Abbas, Petko Kitanov, Shoshanna Longo
Approximate Solutions To Lane-Emden Equation For Stellar Configuration, Fazal Abbas, Petko Kitanov, Shoshanna Longo
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, we consider the Lane-Emden equation of the first kind which arises in the study of stellar structures. We use multiple algorithms, based on Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM) to find the convergent series solutions to the singular, non-linear, initial value problem. It is found that the radius of convergence for the solutions is affected by three factors: the choice of initial value, the order and type of non-linearity, and the linear operator used. We then compare analytical results to the 20th order series solution, the Pade approximant to the series, and the approximate solution obtained via the Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg …

Solution Of Fractional Sir Epidemic Model Using Residual Power Series Method, Shatha Hasan, Ayat Al-Zoubi, Asad Freihet, Mohammed Al-Smadi, Shaher Momani
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The SIR model with unknown parameters is an important issue for scientists in the study of epidemiology and medical care for the injured people. In this work, an efficient technique based on the generalized Taylor series, called the residual power series method, is applied to solve the SIR epidemic model of fractional order. The fractional derivative is described in the Caputo sense. The use of the residual power series method enables us to get an analytic solution of the SIR model in the form of a convergent power series in addition to the approximate solution. To show the efficiency of …

A New Analytical-Approximate Solution For The Viscoelastic Squeezing Flow Between Two Parallel Plates, Abdul-Sattar J. A. Al-Saif, Abeer Majeed Jasim
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, a new approach is used to study analytically the axisymmetric fluid squeezed between two parallel plates. This new approach depends mainly on the coefficients of powers series resulting from integrating nth order differential equation with known data. We obtianed an analytical-approximate solution for the squeezing flow between two parallel plates. The steady non-linear governing partial differential equations are converted by using the suitable similarity transformation into ordinary differential equation. In addition, some theorems are introduced to prove the convergence of a new approach theoretically and explain the verifications of these theorems computationally. The results domenstrate this new …
